S.C. Rep. Roland Smith – whose GOP-dominated “ethics” committee gained infamy last year with its show trial of “Republican” Gov. Nikki Haley – will not seek reelection in 2014.
Smith confirmed his intentions to The Aiken Standard, his hometown paper.
“I want everybody who has intentions on running for the seat to have all the information about me not be running,” Smith told the paper. “There have been several rumors about it, so I wanted to go ahead and announce it before more rumors came out.”
How polite … of course like so many status quo politicians in Columbia, S.C., Smith has always been a “nice guy”
In addition to giving Haley a hall pass, Smith infamously told a reporter last year that he “couldn’t afford” to even discuss the ethics scandal involving powerful S.C. Speaker Bobby Harrell.
Pretty much sums up his “leadership” of this committee, huh?
See ya, Roland Smith. The citizens and taxpayers of South Carolina appreciate your efforts to sweep multiple scandals involving our corrupt elected officials under the rug (<- editor’s note: sarcasm alert).
Oh … Smith’s announcement should serve as a reminder to his colleagues that the “ethics reform” bill being championed by Haley and other “Republicans” fails to address the S.C. General Assembly’s corrupt self-policing practice.

Shoveling bullshit day in and day out is a tough job, cut the man some slack. He may in fact be the hardest working man in S.C. government.
Greg Ryberg, this guy…there must have been too much radiation exposure in Aiken County.
Ryberg, who married rich, sold beer, rubbers, and wrapping papers in video poker dens called connivence stores? That Ryberg? Naw man, he is as honest as the day is long. Really, just ask him.
And lets not even start on his daughter, a little politico of her own in my dear Greenville. She got 7 million dollars from venture capitalist (that were friends of her old mans and of the SC Investment Commission) and broke the business in less than 3 years.
Yea, radiation is as good an answer as any.
Wait, didn’t Ryberg sell his business to venture capitalist too? Hmmm.
Best thing ever happened to Aiken was Ryberg leaving the Senate. He was a tyrant.
And a Peeler suck up!
But, he will tell younhow honest, ethical moral and forthright he is.
He was much too close to the unethical, immoral and self serfserving Peelers.
I’m sure this bastard has a nice lobbying job lined up. I would call him a cucaracha but that is owb’s job.
I think you would be a great lobbyist southmauldin.
Cockroach Smith – a legend, a honest to God legend
His ability to scurry sideways and backwards simultaneously while giving the impression of going forward is what legends are made of
My initial recommendation for replacement would be that Cockroach Goldfinch fella over on the Coast. Dude has already racked up an indictment, a lawsuit involving multiple States, millions of someone else’s money allegecd to be involved and the Cockroach hasn’t even served a full term.
In the annals of Cockroaching he is a stud
That’s a distinguished accomplishment to crown any legislative career: Ethics chairman for South Carolina. It’s difficult to even type it with a straight face!
How can he retire when he never started working ? At least we can say ” It’S kinda a great day in SC “.
They are all in for the money. The hell with serving the public. I predict next year Guv Haley will turn lesbian and pistol whip her opponents during the debates. Glenn McConnell will wear a hairpiece from the cadaver of a man who was denied Medicaid by Haley and died without health insurance. Andre Bauer will make headlines after being arrested for anal sex with a dog in Dupont Circle up in DC at 2 a.m. Bobby Harrell will poison the next ethics chairman with drugs from his pharma connections after being convicted on conflict of interest charges. Lindsey, Sanford, and Will Folks will get drunk and have a threesome in one of those train cars at the stadium.
Livin’ high on the taxpayers. Making money off political conflict.
Poor Roland is not very smart or articulate.
He has shown no leadership as chairman of rhe House Ethics panel and needs to go.
Often we find those replacing incompetence are just as incompetence or unethical, as those they replace. A case in point Brian White replacing Dan Cooper. Cooper replcing Harrell and if Harvfey peeler were to replace the incompent, self serving Rhino Leathermn.
Thr problem is we are rife with failed leaders, incompetence, immorality and grossly unethical elected officials in this State and Country.
That position is a waste of taxpayer money. There aren’t any ethics in South Carolina, and it would cost too much to get some.
I just will be happy when hypocritical SC politicians finally pass some meaningful ethics reform.
