Our founding editor’s wildly unsuccessful Mr. Mom tour last week included a stopover at a friendly neighborhood Walmart, where he couldn’t help but notice the faces of those Duck Dynasty guys plastered literally everywhere.

Duck Dynasty is huge, people …

With 14 million viewers per episode, it is easily the biggest show cable network A&E has ever produced.  It’s also now the focus of a major controversy involving one of its bearded stars, Phil Robertson.

The 67-year-old patriarch of the program gave an interview to GQ in which he offered his personal beliefs on homosexuality, religion and other matters.

“Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men,” Robertson told GQ. “Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers—they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”

Robertson was just getting warmed up …

“It seems like, to me, a vagina – as a man – would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me,” Robertson continued. “I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.”

According to Robertson, only one thing can save individuals – and America – from fire and brimstone: Jesus Christ.

“If you simply put your faith in Jesus coming down in flesh, through a human being, God becoming flesh living on the earth, dying on the cross for the sins of the world, being buried, and being raised from the dead—yours and mine and everybody else’s problems will be solved. And the next time we see you, we will say: ‘You are now a brother. Our brother.’ So then we look at you totally different then,” he said.

Wait … has he run that doctrine by Pope Francis?

Anyway …

Not surprisingly, A&E yanked Robertson as a result of his comments.

“We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson’s comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series ‘Duck Dynasty,'” the network said in a statement. “His personal views in no way reflect those of A+E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community. The networks has placed Phil under hiatus from filming indefinitely.”

Sheesh …

Like him or not, like his show or not (we don’t watch it, personally) … but that strikes us as kind of ridiculous.

Obviously as a private corporation it’s A&E’s prerogative to suspend Robertson, but imagine for a moment one of its personalities had condemned heterosexuality in the same manner?

Would that person have also been suspended?

We doubt it …

Only the Catholic Church sticks with the view that Mary Magdalene was anything other than a virtuous woman – in fact Greek Orthodox tradition states just that. Most non Catholic theologians distinguish her
from the ‘Sinful Mary” who washed his feet (Luke 7:37-50) and Mary of Bethany of “Mary and Martha Fame” (Luke 10).

He clearly ministered to all walks of life but to suggest the fact that he associated with a prostitute means that he affirmed the lifestyle choice is laughable at best and heretical at worst.

Compare his response to your assertion when he met the “Woman at the Well” story told in John 4:4-26, Quoting 16-18 “He said to her, “Go, call your husband and come here”. The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband’; for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly.”

He cut her no slack at all, divorced multiple times and living with a man at the present.

In dealing with the “Adulterous woman”, likely a prostitute, in Luke 9, his response was even clearer – “I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on sin no more.” If adultery wasn’t a sin, why did she need forgiveness from it?

I am not bound by the law – there is no law to condemn me. I am not a party to it, since my father was not Abraham. If I were a party to it, the contract pretty much states that my end of the bargain, unfulfilled, constitutes a death sentence. So, there’s that.

HOWEVER, if I am justified by “faith” I am STILL not bound by the law. The law, whose contract ends with my death, was paid in full by the life (er.. blood) of Jesus, releasing me from ALL of its requirements.

From that salvation there is no law, save my conscience (uh, let’s see.. the technical term is “in those days the law will be written on your hearts”) – the only restriction being don’t eat pork in front of Messianic Jews… and shit like that, because it would tempt them to engage in stuff they’re too stupid to know isn’t a sin… and if they think it is.. it is.

This is all very interesting, but it distracts us from the main point – that Republicans will burn in hell for eternity.

His opinion is formed, his money is made, and he is laughing all the way to the bank. By pulling this off, he has effectively retired, while garnering a Chick-Fil-A like frenzy of support to boost his family’s income. Towards the end of it all, they will sell off the company to Bass Pro or Cabelas while it is on top of it’s game, and hide out on their 20,000 acre spread. First, He is right on what he said, and secondly the eye of the needle referred to in the bible is not a literal needle. You see the walls to the cities were very high and very thick and the gates were very high and heavy and to keep from opening the gates every time someone came in or out of the city they made narrow passage way called the needles eye. In order for a camel to go through it with all the pack on his back it had to get down on all 4 knees and crawl through that 50ft narrow passage way on it’s knees, while it was very difficult it was not impossible. therefore a rich man can get into heaven it’s just not easy, he needs Jesus to help him through

I’m wondering if there would have been an outcry if noted secular humanist Lawrence Casler came out and said anal sex is obviously dangerous for humans because the rectum was not designed for it; it does not produce natural lubrication, the lining of the anus/rectum tears easily and the chance of transmitting blood born diseases if far greater when engaging in anal sex than vaginal sex.

Say he said something like this “I suggest for today’s prevailing neurotic climate it is precisely this climate of insisting that we do things your body wasn’t designed to do, that makes so difficult the acceptance of a healthier way of life.”

Would there have been this outcry? Or is this outcry more a tempest in a teapot focused on furthering an agenda than anything else?

LOL. He is a devout family man and Christian who accurately related Christian doctrine. You are really just saying that Christianity is ugly inside and out. You are entitled to your opinion, as ill informed as I suspect it to be, just as I am entitled to mine that Christianity (or at least more broadly judeo-christian morality) has been the greatest force for good in human history.

Reply
Smirks December 19, 2013 at 9:44 am

You are really just saying that Christianity is ugly inside and out.

Well, any religion or belief that demonizes or actively persecutes an individual or group of peoples over something that has no logical basis whatsoever is pretty much ugly on the inside and out. That isn’t limited to Christianity alone. I also find the belief that anyone not subscribing to a certain religion deserves eternal, unending torment and punishment, regardless of what kind of life they lived or anything. Even simply ending their existence would be considered a great leap towards a humane, more reasonable punishment, although still awkward that such a punishment hinges on something as simple as whether or not you believe in -one- religion’s deity, supposing you were even lucky enough to be told about that -one- religion within your lifetime.

And I’m of the firm belief that secularism has been the greatest force for good in human history. Not any overbearing religion, not any theocracy, not any government that actively censors religion, not any government that forcefully stifles or persecutes any religion, but an open and fair protection of religion without religion being able to drastically influence the laws. Just about every advancement of secular freedom came at a time when people followed religion less strictly.

When society finally writes a law permitting gays to have the same rights of being legally defined as married that straight couples have, again, it will be another force of good that came about not by religious intolerance, but by a secularist pursuit of fairness and equality for everyone.

Reply
CL December 19, 2013 at 10:32 am

It has nothing to do with demonizing anyone.* It is a question of whether there is an objective morality in this world or just the subjective preferences as we float through existence as random atoms that combined by chance.

Just calling something illogical does not make it so. Set aside religion for a moment. There is a utilitarian, nonreligious logic for even secular societies to have determine that “aberrant” behavor (not using it in a judgmental sense, just noting that it is something engaged in by a small portion the population) or characteristics are undesirable and wrong. It is the same brutal logic that led many tribes to expose infants that were malformed or displayed recessive traits that made them stand out.**

From the religious perspective, it is wrong because it violates God’s design for us. Obviously you do not agree with the premise that a God exists who sets these moral laws, but disagreeing on a premise does not render a position illogical.

There is a lot of issues that would need to be fleshed out packed into your statements about religion. But from a starting point, if a creator did exist and did not want robots, but instead wanted to share his love with free creatures, that necessarily implies the choice to reject God’s love. He could have created a world populated by robots, but it would be a world without love. We could lobotomize every child to eliminate “bad” behavior, but that would be a sick, empty, twisted world I would not want to be a part of.

And the Christian perspective is not that nonbelievers deserve punishment, it is that none of us deserve God’s love. We are all fallen, sinful creaturs. It is only through accepting his grace that we can hope to experience it. I hope that for myself and my family and I hope it for you. I have the same desire for vengeance that anyone feels, but I hope for salvation for the worst monsters alive. If for no other reason than if there is hope for the Fidel Castros of the world, there might be hope for me.

And Paul wrote that those who had not heard the word could be saved:”They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.” I believe that it is hearing the word and rejecting it that puts your soul in jeopardy. You should read William Lane Craig on this and related issues.***

* Please point to anyone being persecuted by Christians for being homosexual. To the extent the word has any application, it is Christians who are being ostracized and attacked.

** I would call that immoral (I suppose you would too, but am at a loss as to your warrant for doing so without an objectively grounded morality), but it is not illogical.

*** One other point that, it is not really a valid objection to the argument for God’s existence to say that religions exclude from salvation those that never heard the message. God’s middle knowledge allows him to know all possible outcomes of all possibilities. He knows whether I would accept his grace being born in SC in the late 20th century in the circumstances I was born and he knows what choices I would make if I had been a contemporary of Jesus. If God’s plan is to maximize the number of those who will accept him from a world populated by free beings, it is certainly possible that those who lived without hearing the message would not have accepted God under any circumstance in any time. A depressing thought, but there is nothing illogical about it.

CL December 19, 2013 at 10:43 am

The 20th century put the lie to the notion that secularism is a great force for good. We saw what “progressive,” modern man divorced from objective moral laws was capable of in the USSR, China, Cambodia, et al.

This was the fallacy that Hitchens always made. If you think religion is a delusion, it makes no sense to blame religion for the evils you attribute to it (falsely, I believe, but that is beside the point here). If God does not exist, then the caricature of religion used by atheists is at best a channel for the evil within us. Clearing up the delusion would not make us good. We are the problem. And when you lose the restraining influence of religion, you get Mao and Stalin.

“Just about every advancement of secular freedom came at a time when people followed religion less strictly.”

At best that is a tautology. Of course “secular” freedom results in a reduction of religious adherence. But the advances in human freedom and human civilization are, I believe, inseparable from religion and religious morality. At the most basic level, you cannot even begin to talk about a system of government composed of citizens with rights until you start to accept that each person has worth and rights. But what objective basis do you have for making that assertion without God? Take the American Revolution, for example. You can try to edit God out of the Declaration of Independence, but you cannot change the fact that our founders acted out of a deep conviction that they possessed natural rights ordained by God. Take that out, and you end up with the anarchy and violence of the French Revolution.

And society tends to deal with those persons accordingly, by essentially turning away from them, or even more, actively biting back. I remember reading about a huge number of bikers that surrounded a military funeral to block off WBC protesters from being seen. I’m pretty sure most of America applauds those efforts and shuns the WBC trolls. Do you think that is over-the-top outrage against people who just want to innocently put out their religious beliefs? Or do you think that is an appropriate response to what many people feel is hateful, ignorant speech?

It isn’t groupthink, it is society deciding that these kinds of beliefs or comments are not acceptable, mostly because people are starting to realize that there is no rational basis to negative beliefs regarding gays and lesbians.

The difference here is that his views appeared in a media venue over which A&E had no control. So I think it’s pretty hypocritical for A&E to get the vapors over this now. They had to have known all along. Really, who is surprised by this?

The family issued a statement that an A&E rep was present at the interview and did not seem to have any problems with what he said at the time. Makes me wonder how spontaneous this blow-up really is,

Well, at least this moron doesn’t think God sends natural disasters and other shit to “punish” America for its gays, a la Westboro Baptist Church, Pat Robertson, etc.

The “moron” in question holds a couple of degrees including an MEd, revolutionized duck hunting by inventing the modern duck call (he holds the patents), is probably one of the most successful hunting guides in modern times and was a multi millionaire long before A&E came calling.

Since giving up alcohol and finding salvation, he has attempted to live out the Gospel – “My message is to get human beings to love God, love their neighbor and for the life of me I just don’t see the downside of human beings not being so mean to one another and actually care for one another and not steal from one another and not murder each other for their tennis shoes. That’s the message I have. …” He didn’t say gays should be stoned he said he believed homosexuality to be sin. Part of “living your faith” is speaking the truth in love – feel free to reject it.

Yeah Colonel, anyone who holds an advanced degree must be smart; anyone who served in the military must be esteemed; and anyone who loves God must be just peachy.

Not saying you’re right or wrong on this case — I dunno — but your logic is lacking and to be blunt, damned high school level.

The Colonel December 20, 2013 at 4:08 am

Neither a degree nor military service are necessarily a reason to esteem anyone, the names Ayers, Boudin, Calley and Manning come to mind here. However, combine the degrees with the success in multiple fields and the “moron moniker” Smirks wanted to hang doesn’t stick.
Lot’s of folks who “love god” are in the “what were you thinking” crowd as well, “Pastor Marvin” comes to mind here. When you find someone who “loves God” and lives out that love then maybe some esteem is due – not that it will matter to Phil Robertson. He routinely donates huge chunks of money to a variety of charities, speaks frequently and eloquently (he does have the degrees after all) on the importance of living a forthright life – he genuinely lives his faith. If you disagree with his beliefs, don’t watch or listen but the ad hominem attacks are easily refuted as I have easily done.

I’m shocked an old redneck who likes to hunt all the time did not express the current orthodoxy on homosexuality.

The folks at A&E are surprised? They want a TV show about goobers acting like goobers and then profess shock when one of their “stars” says something politically-incorrect? What? You mean backwoods rednecks are not paragons of enlightenment and tolerance?

Some guy named Jeffrey Jena said it —–

“I went to see the Gay Parade. Now, gay is a sexual preference. I don’t know why they have their own parade. There’s not a Missionary-Position Parade, or a Woman-Superior Parade. How about a Doggie-Style Parade? I’d be on that float. I’d be leading that parade. Well, I’d be second….

But I would rather know fifty gays than one Jehovah’s Witness. You won’t ever see a gay guy at your front door trying to convert you.”

Well Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, with an obdurate endorsement of homosexuality, was allowed to die a natural death, as (most probably) a reality “let’s watch silly rednecks make duck calls” series doubtless will. He hasn’t called for anyone to defecate in Obama’s mouth and anyone seizing up with an apoplectic outrage (or willing to give someone else license to gore their ox) would do well to STFU and see the Ducks fade into triteness. Making more of the remarks on one keeps the issue of right and wrong on the table for Falwell and the Forced Baphomet Church of Protest for publicity’s sake.
PS, as a Protestant, he might agree with Farakhan regards Papal vestments lookin’ like a dress. Anyone ask him?

An upper management guy who works for one of my customers made a big deal about marrying his partner even if SC doesn’t recognize it. Now he has been caught having an affair with another guy and the first guy has kicked him out of their home. Funny thing is, they wanted to take vows and benefit from the recognition of being forever wed. Turns out it was a sham all along. Now they find themselves in a civil cat fight over who owns what. He said SC is screwed up in that they “should be entitled to a proper divorce like everyone else”. I know there is some irony in there somewhere but I just can’t put my finger on it.

I’ve never understood why homosexual men would want anything other than a civil union. Gay men don’t want commitment over sex.

Now Lesbos are a different story.

FITS headline is indicative of how F*#kin out of touch FITS and the Pop Culture Idiots are…

Robertson is not in trouble. Our country is in trouble because of EXTREME Dumb@$$#$ like FITS, who are so weak of any true morality, that they immediately Jump into lockstep w/ the media cliche…

Robertson will be fine, It’s the spiritually lost like FITS, A&E and the hate-filled homosexual Gestapo. that will eventually reap what they sow.

I think A&E has every right to attack Robertson, and fire him, no matter how D@*n stupid it is…It was the No. 1 show in all of cable history. What a bunch of F*#kin idiots they must be to let a gaggle of Hitler-Youth Gays bully them because Robertson may have a different opinion than Obama, and the rest of the pieces of $#!* destroying our country…….

But there is no law against Stupidity. If there was, voting democrat would be illegal, punishable by hanging…

And: the point is how Dangerous you homosexuals are to Silence any thought that does not march in lock-step with your hate speech, immorality and Gestapo tactics….

Here’s my take on it.

The entire show is set up, just like all “reality” shows.
A&E already knew his views.
It is a ploy to generate interest in the show.
It is a really stupid show.
