Men and women who commit adultery would be subjected to public lashings and stonings in Afghanistan under a new penal code being drafted by the nation’s ministry of justice.
“Men and women who commit adultery shall be punished based on the circumstances to one of the following punishments: lashing, stoning (to death),” the code states.
Under current law, adultery is punishable by imprisonment. Under the new law, if you’re married and you cheat you would stoned. If you’re unmarried and you cheat, you would get 100 lashes.
A throwback to the days when the Taliban ran the country, the new law is still subject to approval by the Afghan parliament and president Hamid Karzai – who is in the process of negotiating an extended stay for American troops in the country.
The United States has been at war in Afghanistan since October 2001 – with a “surge” initiated by U.S. President Barack Obama in 2009.
Obama famously declared Afghanistan the “right war,” referring to American involvement in Iraq as the “wrong war.”
Both are wrong in our opinion …
