For example, in the article you cite you talk about “absolute” scores on the PISA as if that means something. The scores are adjusted every year so the average is always 500! There’s no “absolute” number in what gets released. You are clueless on that. Also, you use the SAT scores as a way to measure the state’s progress without even mentioning how different states have totally different groups of students which change in different ways each year. You are clueless on that, too.
It’s OK to be clueless (the New York Times usually is on these topics)! Where you get in trouble is when you think you know something but you haven’t done the work to learn what you’re talking about.

Spending time in the schools is an excellent thing to do, but it doesn’t replace careful analysis of how kids are really doing. Those analyses say that American students are really improving. Look at how much the NAEP scores for various groups of kids have increased in the last twenty years.

It’s not true. Inflation jumped from below 2% in 65/66 to over 6% by 1970. It had a sharp decline in the early 70s, but then it started to take off again in late 72/early 73. The oil crisis did not begin until October 73, so how could it have caused large inflation in the late 60s and the earlier year? The answer is that it didn’t. The inflation we saw starting in 72 was caused by federal monetary policy, collectively called “Nixon Shock.” Though it wasn’t all bad–for example ceasing convertibility of the dollar into gold had short term negative consequences but allowed for much more robust long term growth as our economic value far outstripped the ability to acquire gold to back currency.
Some would argue that this inflation was the result of funding the ever more expensive Vietnam debacle without raising taxes or unduly worrying the American people about the true scope of the long military disaster in Vietnam, the bill for which they (we) were gradually being made co-signers.
