S.C. Attorney General Alan Wilson’s office has given former University of South Carolina running back Kenny Miles a thirty-day “medical leave” from his job in the wake of an unexplained shooting in which Miles was wounded.

News of the leave  – which will be unpaid – was first reported by The (Columbia, S.C.) State newspaper.

Miles was shot in the forearm on Monday in what was initially described as an attempted robbery.

That turned out not to be the case, though … which has prompted a flood of theories as to what really happened to Miles.

Numerous sources have reported that drugs were involved in the shooting … while others claim a gambling connection.

Still others believe Miles was working undercover as part of an anti-gang effort.

There’s no shortage of speculation, in other words … a process Miles is fueling by refusing to speak publicly about the incident (and by reportedly changing his story to police several times in the aftermath of the shooting).

What we do know is that Richland County (S.C.) Sheriff’s deputies have uncovered the bullet that wounded Miles from a parking lot near where he was shot, although it remains to be seen whether they will be able to trace it back to a weapon.

Or a shooter …

We also know the sheriff’s office didn’t want this particular hot potato in its lap, and initially tried to pawn the case off on a pair of local jurisdictions.

“There was a dispute initially about borders,” one source tells FITS. “RCSD was trying to give the call to city cops.”

A 23-year-old native of Lawrenceville, Georgia, Miles rushed for 1,341 yards and four touchdowns during his career at South Carolina. He also had 416 receiving yards and caught one touchdown pass. Miles’ biggest game for South Carolina came in 2009 when he ran for 114 yards on just 17 carries against Clemson – leading the Gamecocks to a 34-17 win (the first of four consecutive victories in this rivalry series).

“He will not be paid during his absence from his work as a support clerk, which includes community outreach and youth mentoring, attorney general spokesman Mark Powell said.”

“Community outreach and youth mentoring”???? What in the flying flungdoolie has this got to do with running the SCAG’s office, other than giving Alan Wilson a handy jock to sniff when he needs a fix? So, this is where our tax money goes? One more reason to vote against Wilson in 2014.

A Jock Sniffer like Wilson is going to throw state money at athletes just to hang with them. Sad, actually, when you think about it.

He is going off the payroll, regular state employees have sick and annual leave. He could have used up all of his leave or either he is part time or temp and would not receive any benefits. I seriously doubt he had any duties as a support clerk that would take him out of the office. More to this employment but we may not get to it since he works for an elected state officer.

Football is for pussies. They should let them open carry on the field, so we can see who the REAL winners are.

I say if they want to eliminate helmet to helmet hits and concussions, make them play without helmets all together. I doubt many players are going to skull to skull.
