When our founding editor was a little kid he used to travel to a church camp in Montreat, N.C. There, he would stay at a home called “Pleasant Mount.” The owners of that abode – who have something to do with Krispy Kreme doughnuts – named their bungalow thusly because they were from Mount Pleasant, S.C.
Get it? “Pleasant Mount.” “Mount Pleasant.”
Yeah …
Anyway, Mount Pleasant (like many South Carolina municipalities) is electing local officials this week. One favorite? Ben Bryson, a real estate developer who is running for town council.
Bryson is a “favorite” because he’s been backed by the local “business community” as well as the increasingly left-leaning local newspaper, The (Charleston, S.C.) Post and Courier.
“Ben Bryson can hit the ground running if elected to council,” the paper noted in endorsing him.
Ah yes … “hit the ground running.”
Bryson is running as a fiscal conservative, which we think is rather curious considering his personal financial situation.
According to Bryson’s 2012 divorce settlement, he’s required to pay his ex-wife $2,500 a month in alimony and $1,000 a month in child support (among other fees).
That’s $3,500 a month on top of his monthly expenses of just over $5,000.
Bryson’s problem? He only makes $5,000 a month – according to financial declarations submitted in connection with his divorce.
Hmmmmm …
We’re not suggesting Bryson has any “off the books” revenue … or that he’s ripe for the sort of pay-to-play corruption that’s rampant … or that he’s the latest in a long line of faux “conservatives” to seek office in the Palmetto State.
Why not? Because we honestly don’t care enough about Mount Pleasant politics to dig too deeply into this guy … and besides, seeing as Bryson’s election is tomorrow it’s probably too late in the game to make much of a difference in the race.

He’s old enough to be her daddy.

Damn right he can. Anyone who can spend $8500 a month and take in only $5000 a monthy may just be our answer. to prosperity
Face the facts. Jesus could only turn fish into more fish and wine into more wine. This dude can take a $1.00 and turn it into $1.70. Amazing, absolutely amazing
Jesus turned water into wine. The “fish and bread” became more “fish and bread”.
Sounds like a graduate of the Lee Bright school of accounting.
Fiscal conservative? Lee Bright can teach this guy a thing or two about fiscal conservatism. Want to cut spending? Declare bankruptcy!
FINALLY, IT’S ‘LECTION DAY IN SC!

Hey Fits, can you find Mark Sanford’s or Bob Faith’s divorce settlements. THOSE are some I’d like to see.
