Dear Editor:
The director of the S.C. Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services (SCDPPPS) – Kela Thomas – is at it again. She is writing anonymous letters about her staff to herself – then using these letters to lodge actions against those staff (disciplinary actions, terminations, etc.).
I know for a fact she has lied under oath at numerous hearings.
Thomas is completely incompetent and has created a big mess at this agency. She lies on the department website.
Also, check out the parole board members’ locations and what districts they represent. She and Gov. Nikki Haley are covering up the fact that one district is not represented at all while two members live in the same district.
Also, they brag about using the Static 99 Risk Assessment for sex offenders. You should ask them how many of the staff are qualified to use the Static 99? According to the Static 99 website, “persons using the Static-99 should receive training from a trainer who is approved by the author of the instrument.”
With the “Thomas turnover rate” that she caused and loves to complain about, there are very few, if any, agents certified to use the risk assessment tool.
Thomas held on to funds that should have been used to hire new staff, while allowing her bullies to dangle jobs in front of county department heads, making them do tricks and jump through hoops to get staff.
Now they have hired over forty agents, in an attempt to fix what they messed up.
Scott Norton is secretly running SCDPPPS into the ground. Thomas is incompetent and she trusted the wrong people to tell her what to do. I am guessing Norton is working on becoming the next director.
Her entire executive management team consists of incompetents with inflated egos and hidden agendas. The governor won’t help. Somebody needs to save that department before it implodes.

Very interesting … I’ve heard reports of these “letters” from my moles at the agency before – and you are absolutely correct regarding the cover-up of the board members. That’s a huge scandal waiting to happen – and a gold mine for attorneys looking to overturn decisions of the board. One thing you missed – there is a forensic audit of the agency (in addition to the damning Legislative Audit Council report released earlier this year) that is on this week’s agenda of the S.C. Budget and Control Board (SCBCB). I’m endeavoring to get a copy of that audit right now …

Isn’t Kela originally from Orangeburg? Wonder if Nikki knew her then? Her husband, Darrin, is the registered agent for Black Pages, Thomas McCants Media, and Thomas Media group. The three companies were incorporated in NC, Va., and SC respectively, according to SC Sec. of State.
I don’t know about moles, but I do know that former Senator Glenn McConnell was informed about and knows about felony conduct inside this agency — just like a former Chief of Detectives at the Charleston County Sheriffs Office and the City of North Charleston PD … It was swept under the rug, but not the evidence. Probation agents were facing 5 years in prison. What they did, there are no statutes of limitations.
Time to bring some class, not trash to the office of the Governor and her cabinet.
Lying under oath to Senators cannot be a problem since the dhec director does it every time she opens her mouth.

If he refuses to answer the question (or retract the premise which precipitated the question), he is banned from posting until such time he chooses to do so.

There are some very distinguished men on your list. Some lived during the 1800’s, and some were mayors of very small towns, but your response is well received. I do note that the men on your list who served as mayors of major cities (Cleveland, Gary, Dayton, Tallahassee) did so more than thirty years ago. That takes nothing away from them, but it does distance them from their modern counterparts. As Obama has recently qualified his statement that “If you like your plan, you can keep it”, I should like to revise my question to be, “Name a couple of black mayors of MAJOR cities in the last 20 YEARS who have not been caught up in corruption and scandal”. You would find that to be an infinitely tougher assignment. But, it’s not fair to change the rules midstream. You answered my question. Good show, Sir!
Every time Fits posts an article claiming to have damning evidence about a state agency, its director or its employees, somehow he never comes up with the proof about the allegations. then all the anti-government morons get on here claiming they have “proof” and “evidence” and that they “know for a fact” that all this malfeasance is occurring. yet oddly enough, none of them can back up their claims. this is just another example.
…because the LAC’s report isn’t evidence enough? Millions in missing funds, fraud going undetected because of its employee’s own incompetence, not following the procurement code, discriminatory hiring practices, non-police officers being enrolled in the police officer’s retirement system, etc. These are all proven facts. First, this isn’t a FITS article written by a FITS writer; this is a letter, presumably from a PPP employee. Second, is it really that much of a stretch to believe what this person is saying, considering the findings of the LAC report?

Once the fiscal mismanagement makes “The State” or the “P&C” and Queen Nikki gets embarassed, she’ll demand Kela Thomas’ resignation, just like she did with Abe Turner. After all, they are just token political appointees, not professionals in their fields.
