Clemson University head football coach Dabo Swinney doesn’t run the Tigers’ offense. Nor does he run the Tigers’ defense. He’s sort of a “head cheerleader” when you think about it … which explains his comments in the wake of the 51-14 thrashing Clemson received from Florida State last weekend.
According to Swinney, the Seminoles caught his Tigers on a “bad night” and if the teams played each other ten times “we’d probably win five, they’d probably win five.”
He added Florida State was just “a bit ahead” of Clemson.
Huh?

Florida State set a record for points scored against the Tigers in Death Valley. The Seminoles amassed 565 yards of total offense. They converted 75 percent of their third downs. They possessed the ball for 35 minutes. And they did all of that with a freshman quarterback … who was playing in his first road game against a ranked opponent.
Meanwhile Clemson’s vaunted offense was held to just 326 yards (145 of which were accumulated in mop-up duty late in the game) – and quarterback Tajh Boyd was held to under 200 passing yards for only the fifth time in his career as a starter.
Seriously … in what universe does Swinney think his Tigers are FSU’s equal? Has he been hanging around Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini?
We get that Swinney (like a good cheerleader) wants to keep his players upbeat after a demoralizing loss. But there’s way to do that without sounding like a complete and total moron.

Lets see. What he should say is that this team is terrible. None of the players are any good. Clemson will never win any more games. I mean he has totally fooled the voters of the AP and USA polls who ranked his team in the top 10 AFTER the FSU defeat. Now if he publicly trashes his team to the national media that will garner more votes, right?

Even in the face of all the odds, at least he attempts to have a positive attitude. What he should really say is that we got our asses handed to us, back to the drawing board. But for the Clemson coach to try and spin a 37 point, most points scored on them at home, run us out of Memorial Stadium, beatdown, with a Heisman hyped senior QB, ranked #3, hosting ESPN Gameday, in the most anticipated ACC game maybe ever, as anything but a total embarrassment IS total denial. A lot of teams were upset last Saturday. None received a record breaking beatdown, hosting ESPN Gameday, before a home crowd, that the overhyped Clemson Tigers did. Obviously the national media thinks it’s newsworthy, too. And now the head coach saying it was not so bad, is another great story.
Interesting how Dabo ordered Gameday to be there and the national media to hype his team. All this time I thought they made their own choices. Dabo must have files better than Hoover did to force the media and the coaches to continue to vote his team in the top 10.

Why do you continue to make this a Carolina-Clemson thing? There is no connection. The national sports media isn’t trying to put Clemson down personally. It’s just a good story when the #3 team gets run out of their own stadium in the “ACC Game of the Century” after five weeks of extensive build up. They have to report the results of the game. What else are they going to say? Try to relax, man.

Clemson basked in the limelight of championships and Heisman winners for many weeks, and never complained. Never once did I hear Dabo say his team might not be that good or that Tajh was overhyped. Did the Clemson sports information people decline to promote Tajh for Heisman because they didn’t want the attention? All I heard was “this is our time”. Then he got smashed, it happens, it’s a college sport, but don’t now claim you were a media creation from the get go and that Clemson didn’t love being put on that pedestal. I get that you love your team and will defend them to the end, but come on.

Interesting how Dabo tricked the Pickens cop into using Pickens equipment for his personal use that caused him to get fired. Sort of like how Watkins tricked the Clemson cop who stopped him into stealing gas from his police car.

Hey, Dabo, this is college football, not baseball, not the NFL. You don’t normally play teams multiple times. You get one shot, and if you screw it up, you take your loss and go home.
FSU was and is the better team this year. The Tigers played similarly in the previous game but managed to snap out of it long enough to avert a loss. This game they didn’t snap out of it at all and got trampled. Maybe that’s something your players can work on and fix, but it was enough to show that the Seminoles are more deserving of the title as top dog in the ACC.
Being a good team is nice, but that alone doesn’t win championships. What wins championships is winning when it matters. Clemson just did not do that this time. Focus on making sure the rest of their season is successful and leave it be.
