Barack Obama basked Wednesday in the glow of the unconditional surrender of the Republican Party during the so-called “government shutdown” – and the debate over authorizing additional unsustainable government borrowing.

For those of you who missed it, this was a very costly white flag raising by the Grand Old Party … with even costlier long-term repercussions.

But never mind that because Obama has political points to score. To wit …

“Now that the government has reopened and this threat to our economy is removed, all of us need to stop focusing on the lobbyists, and the bloggers, and the talking heads on radio and the professional activists who profit from conflict, and focus on what the majority of Americans sent us here to do, and that’s grow this economy, create good jobs, strengthen the middle class, educate our kids, lay the foundation for broad-based prosperity and get our fiscal house in order for the long haul,” Obama said.

Wait … the bloggers?

Jeez …

The irony here is we were merely carrying the torch he lit back in 2006 – when he correctly bashed fiscally liberal Republicans for their unsustainable deficit spending (something we’ve been doing for the last seven years, too).

But let’s address his points one by one, shall we?

Has Obama grown the economy? No. Growth is anemic … and slipping.

Has he created good jobs? No … a record 90 million people are currently out of the workforce.

Has he strengthened the middle class? No … American incomes continue to fall.

Has he educated our children? No … nor our adults.

Has he laid the foundation for broad-based prosperity? No … he’s created a massive job-killing entitlement full of tax hikes and regulatory oppression.

And finally, has he gotten our nation’s fiscal house in order for the long haul?

Ha!

That’s a good one …

But hey, don’t listen to us … we’re just bloggers who “profit from conflict.”

So a shutdown and default would result in all of those things? Most economists disagree with you, thinking instead it would be catastrophic if the debt ceiling wasn’t raised. Even the Kochs backed off, even Pat Robertson. The only ones deluding themselves were Tea Partiers, right wing bloggers and talking heads, and the gullible masses that lapped that shit up. Even the establishment GOP knew it was suicide. And it was all for, of all things, to get rid of health care reform with zero replacement.

Not to cut spending. Not to create jobs. Not to lower deficits. Not to scale back really abusive government programs. Not to eradicate powers that strip us of our right to privacy, to a fair trial before being killed, to have a day in court so we don’t rot in prison for nothing. Not to end wars, stop needless drug war problems, or close Gitmo. Not to peel back crony capitalism or kill needless subsidies to highly profitable industries. Not to reign in Big Pharma or massive health insurance corporations. Not to fix Social Security or Medicare.

No, all for the ACA. All for a fucking pipe dream.

I sincerely hope the GOP gets a thorough shellacking next year and as many TP dipshits as possible are finally flushed out of the House. Maybe then they will stop this petty crap and wise the fuck up.

Reply
idcydm October 17, 2013 at 9:25 pm

Yes he really displayed great leadership and integrity in his dress down today.

Did I distinguish Republicans and Democrats don’t think so.

Here’s some more leadership and integrity for you:

“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that, “the buck stops here.’ Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.” ~ Senator Barack H. Obama, March 2006

“The problem is, is that the way Bush has done it over the last eight years is to take out a credit card from the Bank of China in the name of our children, driving up our national debt from $5 trillion for the first 42 presidents — #43 added $4 trillion by his lonesome, so that we now have over $9 trillion of debt that we are going to have to pay back — $30,000 for every man, woman and child. That’s irresponsible. It’s
unpatriotic.” – Barack Obama, July 3, 2008

Since Bush was irresponsible and unpatriotic you can only paint Obama the same way.

This just in:

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Residents of the District of Columbia were roused from their sleep by a massive fireworks display over the White House just after midnight, as President Obama declared what he called “a national day of gloating.”

“It would not be productive for this nation, going forward, to crow about our victory over political adversaries,” he said in a nationally televised address. “So let’s get it all out of our systems today.”

Immediately after the President’s speech, loudspeakers outside the White House blasted “We Are the Champions,” and the national day of gloating began.

In addition to a ticker-tape parade, the day’s events will include a screening on the Mall of a clip reel of Texas Senator Ted Cruz’s marathon Senate speech, punctuated by sad trombone sounds.

“Starting tomorrow, my message to the Republicans is, ‘Let’s work together for the American people,’?” said Obama, wearing what appeared to be a beer hat. “But today my message is, ‘We won, bitchaz.’?”

Thought this was a fair examination of the problems with the Obamacare exchanges (and what that means for the economics of the program). I am sure many on here will reject it out of hand because the author is a conservative (gasp), but he details his biases and works through what he is hearing from his sources at both HHS and with the insurance companies. The take away is that the tech problems are bad, and there are probably even bigger problems that will have to be resolved on the back end once the front end is working. However, he believes his sources may be letting the uncertainty color their perception on just how bad it is right now. The technical problems can (presumably) be fixed. The real test will be economic flaw that conservatives have always pointed out. Will young, healthy Americans will act against their self interest to buy policies to subsidize care for older, sicker Americans? A several month delay where only motivated (and thus likely sick) shoppers are going to stick through the glitches to sign up is not a good start.
