Diane Reidy is – or was – a longtime stenographer for the U.S. House of Representatives. Lawmakers have described her as friendly and well-liked, and she’s obviously not terrible to look at (and has kept herself reasonably “intact”). More to the point, she’s reportedly never demonstrated anything resembling erratic behavior.
Why, then, did Reidy have a major meltdown during the big vote to “re-open” the federal government this week?
Good question …
“He will not be mocked!” Reidy shouted after striding to the podium of the House during the evening vote. “He will not be mocked!”
Huh?
“Don’t touch me,” Reidy snapped as House staffers made their first attempts to keep her from speaking.
“He will not be mocked,” she continued. “The greatest deception here is this is not one nation under God. It never was.”
“Had it been, it would not have been … the Constitution would not have been written by Free Masons … that go against God,” Reidy added as a pair of men in suits forcibly led her from the podium. “You cannot serve two masters. You cannot serve two masters. Praise be to God, Lord Jesus Christ.”
Wow …
Reidy was taken to a Washington D.C. mental hospital for evaluation after being removed from the House floor.
The irony?
This woman – whose outrage strikes us as seriously dated and more than a little misplaced (assuming she’s even aware of what she’s saying) – comes off as positively sane compared to those who think the latest “DC debt deal” is going to do anything but exacerbate our nation’s fiscal dilemma.
In fact she might as well be the sanest person in Washington, D.C. – a city which needs to do all of us a favor and disappear from the map as quickly as possible.

lol…the irony is she’s kind of right about some Free Masons contributing to the Constitution…but I don’t see them as much “against” god as they were more along the Enlightenment line of thinking…many of them were Deists really.
She is probably a “true believer”, maybe a little crazy, but I agree not as crazy as most on the house floor.
For those who believe in god as defined by the Bible she should make some sense for crying out loud.
I think what factors in is that she finally realized after all her years as a stenographer that she was just one clown comprising that of a whole circus.
At that very moment she realized the vote was a fraud, the system is a fraud, etc. et al….and the only thing she had to fall back on was her belief in god and some of the teachings therein. Too bad she wasn’t more a Deist because she could have called out the house of frauds/criminals in a more reasoned fashion and not been labeled “crazy”.
I kinda feel sorry for her really.

Liberals latch on to the idea of deism in the founders and in their own
lives because they believe that it relieves them from having to meet a “God defined standard” and allows them to live in whatever manner seems right to them.
Liberals attempt to cast all of the founders as deists when generally; nothing could be further from the truth. They often conveniently forget that the Pilgrims were fleeing religious persecution for their fairly strict Biblically based understanding of their God and their religion. They attempt to nullify that by saying that the pilgrims were actually part of a corporate endeavor which was true – however, there were two corporations, one was a corporate body of believers fleeing religious oppression by having made a contract with a group of businessmen (who were the second) to pay for the trip.
A favorite trap of Liberals is to cast Thomas Jefferson as a deist. They point to the Jefferson Bible as an example of this – Jefferson reduced the New Testament to basically Jesus’ words as they appear in the first four Gospels because he struggled with the idea of the supernatural – not because he doubted the existence of The Christ or a God who was still involved in his creation. They also tend to ignore his own religious preference Unitarianism or the things that Jefferson wrote about his relationship to Go, most notably, ”…I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever….”

Frank and ? – Do I think she was right to do what she did, no I think she was off her meds. Was her commentary right, no, as I have illustrated, our founders may have included many Masons but by far the majority were also devout Christians. Can you “…serve two masters…” – no. Can God “…be mocked…” again – no. Were there some deist in the crowd that fashioned our Constitution – most certainly, deism was “fashionable” in America at the time.
Democracy as we know it was one of the offshoots of the “First Great Awakening”, a religious revival that occurred between roughly 1730-1743. The movement shaped democratic thought, among its tenets was the belief in a free press and idea that information should be shared freely, unbiased and uncontrolled.
The perceived repressions on “personal freedom” that the “Great Awakening” brought about led some in the Colonies to embrace a deism as “fashionable” even though it was dying out in Europe by 1740. (as was hedonism in the 1960s and ’70s, that period was juxtaposed against the “Fourth Great Awakening” that was occurring in the evangelical church – the strife between the two sides exists today and is one of the sources of trouble our political system faces).
I’ve always thought there was some statistical correlation between Masons and Deists of the time. Quite a few Masons did contribute to the Constitution by their own records.
You are certainly right about Deism being “fashionable”, but it was controversial and even those that were Deist still certainly claimed to be Christians most of the time and there was even ongoing intellectual “battles” between those that were Deist and those claiming Deism wasn’t “Christian”.
I think of Patrick Henry, self acclaimed Deist, who’s wife actually slammed Jefferson for being a Deist by claiming her husband recanted on his death bed:
“He met death with firmness, and in full confidence that through the merrits of a Bleeding Savour his sins would be pardoned. . . . I wish the grate Jefferson & all the heroes of the Deistical party could have seen my . . . husband pay his last debt to nature.”
I think this shows that Deism was not only “grey” in philosophy, but further it become somewhat of an albatross as a result and people who even felt compelled to announce their agreement to some of its tenets later back tracked when labeled non-Christian.
Benjamin Franklin proclaimed himself a Deist, only to do that very thing in a half hearted manner. Thomas Paine, who’s influence on the formation of our country was an for the most part an unapologetic Deist.
I’ve never seen any attempt by the Libertine to claim Deism as a proof for living immorally, in fact I would think it hard to do so when you have Paine himself saying:
“that the only true religion is Deism,by which I then meant, and mean now, the belief of one God, and an imitation of his moral character, or the practice of what are called moral virtues”

I use Libertine only to describe those who espouse no divine controlling authority rather than a specific movement or group. Totally concur that our founders were “complex” men as most great men and women are. Agnosticism and atheism don’t quite cover the plurality of the nontheistic ideology. Deist accept that there is a God who created the world and then moved on to other things – they deny the idea that “God is in control”. Libetines have no particular view on God – just that he, if he exists, doesn’t control their actions.
Self determination versus predestination…the topic that has divided Christian theology and obviously extends to even our systems of government.(in debate and practice)
Naturally speaking, it is the issue of who is controlling what that they all have in common. Even, obviously, at the level of government…as the themes of self control & decentralization weight heavy in the Declaration, Articles & Constitution.
As I’m an agnostic, I can tell you that my personal feelings are that I can appreciate the Christian virtues of living morally and try to take the “good book” for its value & lessons on that basis regardless of my rational issues with its claim surrounding divinity.
However, I feel good knowing that I can make a good/well reasoned case outside of divinity to live morally and especially by the non aggression principle.
I think in this regard, the Founders expressed religious tolerance/freedom in their documents/writings for sensible reasons and had elements of healthy skepticism when it came to their own beliefs.
Concur – and to make my own perspective clear, I separate those who acknowledge no compelling authority to live to a moral/ethical code (libertines) from all the rest of us be they agnostic, atheistic, deists, Catholics or “Bible thumping Baptists” who acknowledge that there is a code of moral behavior required of men even if they disagree as to the origin or even the details.

There is something being edited here. There is another clip of her on an elevator saying the same words, which syncs better with “don’t touch me”, the “would not” delay in her speech, and the “C’mon Molly” comment (talking to someone else). Since there are letters placed over her mouth and a digital blurring of that area as they drag her out, lip reading is out of the question. Trying to fit her elevator speech into this one does make her look crazy. Maybe that’s the point.
