The son of Benedict College’s Athletics Department has been accused of stealing a $3,200 grill – and the school’s administration has been accused of covering up the theft.

The grill – owned by Columbia, S.C. native James Crawford – was loaned to Chad Washington (son of Benedict athletics director Willie Washington) during a car and bike show at the school’s football stadium on July 4. It later mysteriously disappeared from behind a locked gate at the stadium.

Crawford filed a police report for his missing property on August 28 after getting “the run around” from both Washington and his father regarding the status of the grill. Since then, he says he’s been getting nothing but a “song and dance” from school leaders.

“A Benedict College employee took responsibility for this grill, locked it securely onto the college premises, and then failed to act in a timely manner to not only divulge the theft, but to report it as well,” Crawford wrote to Benedict President David Swinton earlier this month. “There were no signs of forced entry, i.e. cut locks, gates, or fencing, which would dictate someone had the key to this storage area.”

Crawford said he had a twenty-minute phone conversation with Swinton last week which “was pointless and went nowhere.”

Accordingly, he’s now pressing his case in the court system … and the court of public opinion.

Mistake #1: Lending your grill to someone at Benedict.

Just seems like there’s a ton of corruption surrounding that college.

I find it surprising that a 20 minute conversation with Swinton was pointless and went nowhere. That’s shocking news.
