ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA (September 24, 2013) – State Senator Lee Bright, candidate for US Senate, South Carolina, has officially signed the Coalition to Reduce Spending’s pledge to reduce spending. The pledge stipulates that Bright will not vote for any spending without offsets elsewhere in the budget and will vote only for budgets with a path to balance.
Bright, one of several challengers facing off against Lindsey Graham in the Palmetto State, is the second in the race to sign the pledge put out by the national, nonpartisan Coalition to Reduce Spending and joins 34 additional candidates from across the country. Other signers include Rep. Paul Broun (GA-10), Sen. Ted Cruz (TX), Rep. Doug Collins (GA-9), and Rep. Mark Sanford (SC-1).
The Reject the Debt pledge has had a noticeable impact in South Carolina electoral politics in 2013: earlier in the year, 15 of the 19 candidates in SC-1’s special election signed the pledge, with pledge signer Mark Sanford ultimately edging out Curtis Bostic, who would not sign. Earlier this month, Senate candidate Nancy Mace signed the pledge.
Jonathan Bydlak, president of the Coalition to Reduce Spending, released the following statement in response to the news:
“Countless special interests on both sides put endless pressure on elected officials to continue indefinite spending regardless of financial commitments. In this climate, it’s unfortunately common for election-time promises to be as temporary as the races that produce them. It’s extremely encouraging for a candidate to put a commitment like this one on paper — and shows commitment above and beyond the average.”
“We’re thrilled Senator Bright has done so,” he added, “and citizens in South Carolina should be thrilled as well.”
As the 2014 elections draw closer, the Coalition says it has been in touch with the other candidates in the race and also plans to reach out to every elected official and candidate for office with the opportunity to go on the record with regard to spending.

Didn’t a butt load of Republicans sign off on some kind of pledge back when Newt the Lewd was running the show.
I recollect the pledge called for the elimination of some 95 programs however in the final analysis not only did all the programs survive their collective budgets increased over 13%
With a little luck maybe the Mace/Bright Pledge will come in under a 20% increase
My pledge is bigger than yours…..no my pledge is bigger than yours…..idiots.
Great another Grover Norqest Dipsh#$!!!! Teabaggers…
Signing a pledge that supersedes your oath of office…not just simple minded, but traitorous.
Ya know……these pledges are a lot like getting a case of corn flakes and then getting home and realizing that the boxes in the case are only half full of corn flakes…!!
We wonder just how much lobby money will get boomeranged….!?
“Bright” has far fewer than half his cornflakes. He recently was rated as the poorest performing legislator for business by the State Chamber. Considering how he managed his own business, not surprising. He would do well to finish high school and attend some college to gain some of the flakes he is so obviously missing.
Great, another stupid pledge by a politician to attempt to please the masses.
Why can’t I get a representative that thinks for themselves and not what some batchit group tells them how to think.
My pledge is that I pledge not to vote for anyone that makes a pledge!
These guys are hurling themselves into an abyss of irrelevance. Like a herd of buffalo going off a cliff. Americans want collaborative government. You go to Washington to work with others.
