S.C. Sen. Tom Davis issued the following statement on South Carolina’s latest employment situation report:
“Our stagnant 8.1 percent unemployment rate is bad news, but even worse news is the fact our income levels are down and our workforce has shrunk to an all-time low. We can do so much better as a state, but we’re never going to reach our full potential unless we truly embrace the free market, lower taxes for everyone – not just for the favored few – and rebate surplus tax collections back to the taxpayers, as opposed to spending it on even more government.
“Neither the increased intervention by government in our economy favored by South Carolina’s Democratic leadership, nor the crony capitalism championed by the governor and other prominent state GOP leaders – that is, providing subsidies, grants, loopholes, and other taxpayer-funded favors to specific companies – leads to prosperity. The leadership in both political parties mistakenly believes more government is necessary to develop our economy.
“Instead of trying to devise new and improved economic plans, our elected officials should restore power to the people and work to make South Carolina the freest state in America – a state where taxes are low for everyone, where the rule of law prevails, where liberty is protected, where the free market flourishes, and where government is limited to specific core functions. If South Carolina becomes the freest state, it will be the place where entrepreneurs bring their ideas, start their businesses, and invest their capital – and as a result provide better economic opportunities for our citizens.”

Ya know……..we highly wager that if someone were to actually print this out and go to the “South of the Border” exit and read this while passing copies of it out for concerned taxpayers and fuel station customers to read.. that someone would get the “doo” kicked out of them.

Tom believes 1/2 of South Carolinians pay no taxes. So exactly how does a tax cut help these folks. Nothin from nothin leaves nothin. He also has a plan for offering education tax credits for welfare recipients and minimum wage workers. He loves to bully 8th graders.
Perhaps Tom will offer all citizens those tax credits afforded his developer pals. Give every South Carolinian an annual $25,000 tax credit and allow them to sell it to the highest bidder. Of course the sale itself would be taxed but nonetheless you would be giving folks a tax credit that wasn’t bullshit for a change.
Thanks for noticing Tom, where have you been for oh, all of your life? SC has traditionally lagged behind the national numbers, that’s nothing new.
The question I have for you is what are you and your boys over at the State House willing to do about it?
Will you:
– cut some corporate tax rates,
– reduce some of the red tape required to move a business here,
– support Tech Ed since that education is driving much of what little revival we have in the economy,
– oppose any unnecessary spending from this day forward and repeal anything that we’re currently wasting money on?
Or are you, as Bill O’Reilly likes to say, just bloviating?
Describe the red tape involved in moving a business here. How much lower than about 1% in taxes can you go?
No S Corp or private LLC is paying anything close to 1%. They pay a tax on products they purchase to conduct their business at 7+%, they pay any number of taxes on/for their employees (and/or themselves). They are taxed on profits at an average of 5% according to the 2012 statistics. The vast majority of jobs being created are being created by the S Cop and private LLCs.
As for the difficulty in starting a business I owned a company that refurbished apartments and rental properties between renters. Basically what we did was clean and paint. I had to have multiple licenses and certifications for things that you as a homeowner or renter could do with no oversight. We didn’t handle hazmat or even dispose of trash beyond the normal cleaning but I still had to have the “appropriate certifications”. We had a different “contractor’s license in every little “burg” that I did business in. Simplify the process to encourage new start up, new start ups expand the tax base and encourage other to start up businesses and move to the state – as long as we keep most of the Yankees out, it’s a win-win.

Over the last three years SCANA has paid corporate taxes at the whopping rate of .1%. 45% of corporations pay no corporate tax. Hmmm.
There not supposed to. Corp’s were basically set up as non profits as all of the profits go back to shareholders. Shareholders are the ones supposed to be paying the taxes on the profits.

Gov. Haley turned down several hundred million dollars to set up health care exchanges just so the insurance industry would be her BFF. I think she threw the rest of us under the bus. Go Davis!
