Clemson University quarterback Tajh Boyd is the new favorite to win the Heisman Trophy, easily outdistancing Louisville’s Teddy Bridgewater in the latest survey of ESPN experts.
“Boyd’s poise saw the Tigers through to a 38-35 win (over Georgia) that changes the trajectory of their season,” ESPN’s Heisman Watch website notes. “He finished with five total touchdowns, including 270 yards passing and 42 yards rushing with no turnovers.”
Boyd received nine first place votes from the ESPN panel (more than twice his nearest competition) and 61 total points. Bridgewater received one first place vote and forty points.
Boyd also topped the recently released HeismanPundit.com straw poll.
University of South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney – who stood atop ESPN’s preseason Heisman Watch rankings – fell to sixth, behind Boyd, Bridgewater, Oregon’s Marcuis Mariota, 2012 winner Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M and Ohio State’s Braxton Miller.
Clowney, 20, finished sixth in the Heisman voting a year ago after recording 23.5 tackles for losses and 13 sacks (both school records) as a sophomore.
Look for Clowney to get his 2013 Heisman campaign back on track this weekend when his sixth-ranked Gamecocks travel to Athens, Georgia to take on the No. 11/12 Bulldogs.
