Four-peat? What four-peat …
Clemson University’s football team has leapfrogged its in-state arch-rival in the latest USA Today/ Coaches’ poll.
The Tigers – who began the season ranked No. 8 – climbed to No. 5 in the coaches’ poll on the strength of their big season-opening win over Georgia. The latest Associated Press poll has the Tigers ranked even higher – fourth in the country.
Both spots are ahead of the University of South Carolina – which climbed from No. 7 to No. 6 in the nation in the coaches’ poll after defeating North Carolina last Thursday. Head coach Steve Spurrier’s team remained at No. 6 in the Associated Press poll.
Obviously the poll that matters – the first Bowl Championship Series ranking – comes out later this season (October 13, to be precise).

The Taters beat a ranked opponent at home in a great showing and my Gamecocks beat a pitiful ACC team at home in a largely milquetoast game. So, as much as I hate to say it, the move up for Clemson and our staying put in one poll and moving up one spot in the other only makes sense. They’ll also likely remain unbeaten when the play us. Giving us the home field advantage and a substantially better defense, I think we’ll beat Clemson for the fifth straight year, but they’re a damn good team, no doubt.
Since UGA couldn’t get the job done….I hope they go undefeated until Nov. 30, 2013. It’s going to be so much sweeter to single-handedly knock them off their National Championship cloud.
What the hell is a “tater”?
It is what you put in your speedo when wanting to impress the girls.
For all of you Clemson people, the “tater” goes in the front, not the back!
I know, I know, you are use to impressing your Governor Haley! But, it still goes in the front!!
Norma… “Tater” is a derogatory term for a clemson fan, booster, alumni, student, etc. The term began a long time as a result of their booster club IPTAY (I Pay Ten A Year….$10, for membership in the athletic booster club). Initially, to boost membership (Due to the Great Depression and since Clemson was originally an agriculture and military school) they even accepted turnips, milk, sweet potatoes and so on as payment. The most common payment….potatoes, which it’s very common to just say tater for potatoes in the south. Anyway, rivals dubbed IPTAY as I Plant/Pick Taters All Year, playing on Clemson’s farmer roots. This was shortened to Tater Pickers, and eventually just Taters.
Stanford shouldn’t play anymore games this season.
My question is if Carolina beats Georgia by more the 3 at Georgia’s house does Carolina jump back in front of Clemson? The difference in the game was 2 plays: a botched hold on a field goal; fumble by Georgia inside their own 15 yard line. Change either of these plays and the game probably ends with a different result.
