U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) released his birth certificate today, revealing he was born in Calgary, Alberta to a Cuban-born father and an American-born mother.
According to The Dallas Morning News, that makes him a dual citizen of the United States and Canada – meaning he may have to renounce his Canadian citizenship in the event he wishes to run for president in 2016.
Which is clearly something the fiscally conservative lawmaker wants to do …
Cruz’s camp is disputing the dual-citizenship claim, though.
“Senator Cruz became a U.S. citizen at birth, and he never had to go through a naturalization process after birth to become a U.S. citizen,” a spokesman told the newspaper. “To our knowledge, he never had Canadian citizenship, so there is nothing to renounce.”
For those of you keeping score at home, Cruz was born on December 22, 1970 – making him 42 years old.
Here’s the official document from the Province of Alberta …
Article II, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution maintains that “No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.”
Scholars have generally agreed that any child born to an American citizen anywhere in the world retains U.S. citizenship. However Canadian legal experts are adamant that any child born in Canada is also a Canadian citizen – unless the child was born to a visiting diplomat.
It remains to be seen whether Cruz will take the formal step of renouncing his Canadian citizenship.
According to polling released last month, Cruz is supported by 12 percent of Republican voters in a hypothetical GOP primary election.

Where’s Trump. He’s down with this junk
So, the Birthers have long held Obama isn’t even president because he was “born in Kenya.” What about “Canada Cruz” who’s actually a dual citizen of America and Canada?
It would be a most delicious irony if the same kooks Cruz is trying to appeal to reject him for actually being born outside of America. Popcorn at the ready …
Ah Frack That. Your Cicero and You don’t know crapola you Cicero. Fracking pro anti-birther wanna be trumpdaddy
Frank is drunk today.
Frank is going on 12 hours with another 4 to go :P
Get him Shifty. Don’t let that fracking Canadian biatch get by with this. Hold’em that fracking …
Canadian Texan?!? Is that like …. What is that like?
Well he meets all three tests from Article II, Section 1.
Now for the really important questions:
1. Can he find his ass with both hands?
2. Does he understand that we have laws that must be followed? Does he understand that just because he’s the President that he still has to follow them?
3. Does he know we’re flat freaking broke and that spending more money isn’t a way to get out of debt?
4. Can he call bullshit when he sees it?
4. He’s a Texan. He sure as he77 better be able to. :P
No.
Where’s Jan. She’ll be here shortly to start slinging.
La, la, la, la la
Oh, you said slinging, I thought you said singing.
In any event I would love for the Republicans to run Cruz for President.
Hey, NObody beats the Dirty Myrtle for reality TV. What’s a matta wit does…
NVM
GAWD DANGEDNABBIT. I HATES ME SOME INFOMERCICALLS
Yeah, but what’s his experience with bath houses?
I didn’t know they had those in Canada. I guess Moosesses (Moosi?) have to do something.
Pro Tip:
If ever offered Moosehead, politely decline.
The antlers get in the way.
Don’t care where Cruz was born, there’s plenty more reasons to not vote for his ass than some lame birth certificate nonsense.
TBG thought the same thing about Obama.
If he was born outside the US, other than to a military family stationed there, how is he eligible? I like how he defended the 2nd Amendment earlier this year.
Hey, the Kenyan has been playing games and hiding much to do with his identity for the last five or more years and getting away with it, so why not Cruz?
This man is a dangerous Canadian! Orly Taitz will be on this!
TBG refers to her as “Orly Tits”.
It’s funny how different countries get all touchy on whose tax cattle are whose.
Everyone should be wearing ear tags that have the flags of countries claiming ownership over them on it.
TBG thinks the Canadian Birth Certificate is an obvious ,photoshopped forgery.
God, I thought Palin was bat shit crazy. This dude wins hands down!!
Looks like this maple syrup mobster is renouncing his Canadian citizenship!
No problem showing his birth certificate.
Hitler was born in Austria , but was the freely-elected Chancellor of Germany . Gotta hope Cruz can do the same as his hero .
Hell no he can’t run…he was born in a foreign country and I strongly believe he’s a Muuuslim and a Communist…or at the very least a member of the Tea Party…………plus, and this only my opinion, he seems to lubricate his head. How anal is that?
This is exactly why I never understood the “birther” arguments about Obama. The fact that Obama’s mother was an American citizen was never in dispute, which means that Obama was also an American citizen regardless of where he was actually born.
It was just the Teapublicans way of calling Obama an illegitimate President. It doesn’ t have to be based in reality. In fact, if it is based in reality, they have no use for it.
You must be deluded. You obviously believe the facts are relevant.
Christie Forced Out of G.O.P. Race by Empathy Scandal
TRENTON (The Borowitz Report) — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie withdrew from consideration as a Presidential candidate today after becoming embroiled in what a leading Republican strategist called “a career-ending empathy scandal.”
After signing a law barring licensed therapists from engaging in so-called gay conversion therapy, Mr. Christie stunned his fellow Republicans by seemingly expressing compassion for gay children, thus disqualifying himself from any further role in the G.O.P.
“Showing empathy for gays or children would have been bad enough,” says Republican strategist Harland Dorrinson, one of many party leaders who called for Mr. Christie to withdraw. “But empathy for gay children is a flat-out betrayal.”
In a brief statement to reporters, Mr. Christie expressed remorse for what he called “my unfortunate and ill-considered display of understanding for people different from myself,” and urged the people of New Jersey to remember “my strong record of cutting funds for schools and the elderly.”
While Mr. Christie might try to regain his fellow Republicans’ trust by vetoing more assault-rifle bans, G.O.P. strategist Tracy Klugian says that the governor does not deserve another chance, citing his “dangerous flirtations with compassion” in the past.
“After Hurricane Sandy, Chris Christie worried a lot of us with his recklessly sensitive behavior,” says Mr. Klugian. “But we really thought he had put this problem behind him.”
Mr. Christie’s latest empathy scandal has left Mr. Klugian, like many other Republicans, shaking his head: “It’s sad to see such a promising career end this way. But maybe this will force him to get the help he needs.”
In Inglis v. Trustees (1830) and Elk v. Wilkins (1884), the plaintiff was born in the United States, of a father owing allegiance to a sovereignty other than the United States. In each case, the Court determined that the plaintiff did not acquire U.S. citizenship at birth: his nationality at the time of birth was that of his father, not his birthplace.
In Dred Scott v. Sandford (1856), Justice Daniels’s concurring opinion characterized the view that:” natural -born citizens are those born in the country to parents who are citizens”.
In Minor v. Happerset (1874), the decision most on-point, the Court defined two classes of citizens. The first consisted of citizen children born in the United States to U.S.-citizen parents (plural). The second consisted of U.S. born children of non-U.S.-citizen parents. The Court used the term “natural-born citizen’ to apply to members of the first class. While both classes are citizens, only persons in the first class are natural-born.
In Kwock Jan Fav v. White (1920), the Supreme Court referred to Mr. Kwock as a natural-born citizen. He was born in the United States to a father who was a native-born citizen and a mother who was a U.S. citizen by marriage.
In Perkins v. Elg (1939), the Supreme Court referred to Marie Elizabeth Elg as a natural-born citizen. She was born in the U.S. to a father who was a naturalized citizen and a mother who was a U.S. citizen by marriage.
Whenever the Supreme Court has referred to a person as a natural-born citizen, that person was
always born in the United States to U.S. citizen parents.
Thanks. Good to see well-researched facts. Cruz is not a natural born citizen and cannot be president. However, if he can overcome this deficiency through some slight of hand and actually get the Republican nomination, Democrats across the nation would rejoice.
NO FUCKING WAY!!!!!!!
