A police officer in Bennettsville, S.C. has been placed on administrative leave after his K-9 partner died in a hot patrol car earlier this week, Tonya Brown of WPDE TV 15 (ABC – Florence/ Myrtle Beach) is reporting.
The as-yet-unidentified officer – who has been referred to by the department as a “veteran” K-9 handler – left his dog, a four-year-old black Labrador retriever named ‘Tank” in a squad car on Monday with the windows rolled up and the engine turned off.
“Tank’s partner is devastated at the loss of Tank,” Bennettsville police chief Larry McNeil told Brown. “That dog just wasn’t the property of the City of Bennettsville Police Department, it was a part of the officer’s family. He stayed with them 365 days a year. The dog went on vacations with him and his family.”
Really? If the officer was so close with “Tank,” then why on earth would he leave him in a parked car outside with the windows rolled up on one of the hottest days of the year?

You would think K9 unit cars would have some kind of modification installed so that they would always be ventilated.
Because the cops are too stupid to know when to roll down the window. Shite. This should be gubmint mandated for the auto industry. $5000 system to detect some form of life in the car and automatically roll down the windows when the internal temperature reaches a certain point.
We should also make it a law that when the window rolls down automatically, the city is automatically immune from civil liability when it kills 50 people because the stupid cop didn’t think to roll down the window an appropriate height. God knows the Gubmint mandate will be to “roll the window down automatically” and 50 people will get killed by the police dog prior to them realizing that the law should have included the words ” …down 2″ for ventilation “.
Of course then the dog, being large, will stick it’s snout out the window and while pressing on it to smell the bacon cheeseburger some stupid “commie citizen” was eating, the window breaks. There goes another 50.
So now we gotta form a fracking committee, at the cost of $50M or so to study the best method to roll down windows for dogs so that they only kill innocent citizens that the cops are chasing, but not the fracking commie’s that are committing 100% of the real crime in this country.

I understand they are waiting on the Vet to let them know what killed the dog. That is the last I have heard and if the name of the officer I heard is correct something does not sound right. Of course I know the Chief takes no part in tickets his officer write that are not correct.

I am crying as I write this. You know that even as the dog died, he was faithful to the last, waiting, in the unbearable heat. 100°, 120°, 140°. At 180°, the temperature turns fatal, the big lab’s loyalty does not waver one bit. His head down, his tongue out, his moisture runs out. As he faints, his last thoughts are that his partner will come. His partner will come. This is no guess, there are 20,000 years of evolution which predicts this. The brain lasts longer than the heart, but in the heat, both have a tendency to end at the same time. Now Death comes to the faithful furry partner. Now that the lab is gone, the horrible suffering is over, the burning, the waiting, the betrayal.. all finished.
This isn’t about guilt, it’s not about punishing anybody, that will happen naturally over time. This is about the death of a friend that was completely avoidable. And this man who lost his friend will never, ever have a friend the likes of this labrador retriever, again. Lab breeders and owners know what I’m talking about. No two labs are the same. Also, this guy will always and forever have the spirit of the other dog imprinted on his consciousness like a branding iron leaves a brand – seared into the skin of a calf.
One of the things you are taught as a boy is to take care of your dog. It helps make you a man. When you break that primeval rule, it does something to you. There is nothing that can be done to that cop that is worse than has already been done by the death of his lab which he caused. His big task is to learn to forgive himself, if he can.

My personal experience with animals is not such a happy tail (?) with such a sad ending. I had very poor experiences with animals growing up. The ones that didn’t take care of their dogs would bite only because the dogs handler believed it was cruel to put a dog on a leash. The dog that was in our backyard, well I got to pick up the poo off the grass, but the damn dog wouldn’t chase a ball.
I had a cat once. I was driving north on PCH doing about 45. The dang thing jumped out the window and was instantly crushed by a tree. Dang tree.
Yeah. We had to put our lab down recently, and this story just hit me in just the right spot at just the wrong time. But you know, kidding or not, it wasn’t your fault with the cat. And there ARE many bad dog owners. You are not to be blamed for the fault of others. And trees are vicious evolutionary bastards. Sometimes.
No joke about the cat. I should have bought a carrier. No more pets for me.

If any private citizen had done this, he or she would have been charged with cruelty to animals.
