S.C. Sen. Lee Bright’s campaign for the U.S. Senate hit its first speed bump this week when far-left website Think Progress published a recap of some of the more extreme positions he’s taken since becoming a member of the S.C. General Assembly in 2009.
Most of these positions we have no problem with – including Bright’s quips in support of secession. However, there is a curious disconnect in the story which could pose problems for the Upstate lawmaker as he seeks to emerge as the conservative alternative to U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (RINO-S.C.).
On the one hand, the website notes Bright’s support for U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann as evidence of his extremism. In the very next sentence, though, it offers up this doozy:
Bright also is on the board of a right-wing seminary that believes women should be subservient to men, both in the church and in the home.
Wait … what?
The website is referring to the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C. – which holds that “wives should forsake resistance to their husbands’ authority and grow in willing, joyful submission to their husbands’ leadership.”
So according to Bright, women should be subservient in the home and church – but dominant in the realm of politics? Hmmmm … sounds kinda conflicted to us. Obviously this website is no friend to Feminazis – as we reminded our readers of earlier this week – but we also don’t abide by discrimination against women.
But why does this “pose problems” for Bright?
Well, one of the candidates he’s running against – Charleston businesswoman Nancy Mace – has demonstrated she’s not beneath playing the gender card when it suits her purposes (as evidenced by her recent attempts to cozy up to S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley).
We suspect Mace will work aggressively behind the scenes to alert female GOP voters to Bright’s association with this seminary …
Will they care? We shall see …

Secession is a major issue.Bright should run on that
“Secession is a major issue” just like Sarah Palin is a major political figure.
I think this is one of those times that people clamoring for a “sarcastic” font have need.
I think this is why, more than any other reason, I like reading your comments, Questionmarkperson.
I’m still looking for it, cause I could surely us it…..
Sigh! – all of my ‘sarcasm’ and ‘fists pounding’ cartoons are in storage, just gathering dust…….
You laugh, but to some people, she is.
Then those people need to double up on their meds. Not only do I laugh, I ridicule, I smirk, I chortle, I guffaw, I gasp for breath at the mention of Sarah Palin as a serious ANYTHING!! She QUIT as governor of her own state!! She is dumb as dirt and she is crooked as a snake. Not even FAUX NEWS kept her as an anchor.
“FAUX NEWS?” Seriously?

Sic Willie, maybe you missed Sunday School when they covered Paul’s letter to the Ephesians or perhaps you zoned out during your marriage ceremony when the officiant charged your spouse to obey. So this is not “new” or radical thinking and/or beliefs. Those who believe in “priesthood of the believer” have the ability to interpret and/or believe for themselves. If Bright’s beliefs run counter to yours then that is fine. It is the “free market of ideas” that you like to speak about.
Sarah, I don’t suppose you subscribe to the proposed theory, then, that Paul was an epileptic who had his famous “vision” when he fell of his donkey in an epileptic seiszure, hmmm.
as I said, all are free to believe what they wish. that hard for you to understand? I assume you are addressing me but it is difficult to tell from your post.
You’re correct, CNSYD. I was addressing you; my mistake. And there is actually some neurological reasoning to believe that Paul suffered from epilepsy and described his symptoms in his writings. Comparing his writings and those of some other visionaries has lead to the hypothesis that perhaps these people who “saw visions” actually were describing seizures instead. Look it up. But of course you are probably too engrained in your beliefs to want to spoil them with what might be contradictory facts.
My, my how we judge and presume to know others’ thoughts and beliefs.
In what sense is speculation “contradictory facts”? The notion that hundreds of people at different times and in different places all experienced a common hallucination of a risen Jesus is, to my mind, rather silly as an explanation. It would be more plausible to argue they were just pulling a con, although the evidence is poor for that hypothesis as well.

In the Book of Smithers 23:42-56, which I just wrote, Paul’s donkey had a tonic clonic seizure and fell on Paul, causing him to go blind. But the passage was lost, causing lawn gnomes to assassinate Hillary Clinton. I believe it, so it’s true, and it has just as much scholarship behind it as your version. So there!
Poly, etc: Thank God you have alerted the American People about the evil that lurks in the hearts and minds of the lawn gnomes! They have been dormant for so many years that this part of their history has almost been forgotten.
However, they can be kept calm by using the Shifty family recipe from my English and Scottish ancestors passed down through the generations. Take equal parts of coffee grounds, black powder, chicken-shit, and stale beer, and ‘paint’ their faces just before sundown. They will not rise up to cause any civil unrest or mayhem.
Each of the Shiftys brought to America one gnome, and none of them (including their offspring) has ever caused the family any distress. But watch them carefully, because if they seem to move about during the night, then mischief is afoot!
Shifty, but what about the millions of lawn gnomes stored in basements, attics, sheds, barns, museums and bedrooms? No one ever throws them in the trash. One woman I know in Atlanta has three that she uses so she can drive in the diamond lane! She rotates them daily. The horror of thinking that they could rise up and rebel all at once! Why did Polyphemos have to mention them?
Many lawn-jockeys lost their lives getting me that information and by gum, the world needs to know. The Book of Smithers ROCKS, DUDES! Hey, Stephen King has already optioned, man. Lawn Gnomes I & II, Lawn Gnomes Upskirt, Lawn & Gnomes, and Lawn Gnomes: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. There’s this great scene where Aslan breaks out of this marzipan Lawn Gnome and Lucy Pevensee does a pole dance.
Damn, I always thought it was the shrooms.
I’ve known plenty of Christians who believe in subservient wives but still would like to see the likes of Palin, Bachmann, Rice, Haley, etc., make it to a high position, even president. Some of these people even believe women shouldn’t be preachers or missionaries. I’m glad God doesn’t consider a vagina to disqualify someone from being leader of the free world at least, even if it does disqualify them from leading a small church congregation in a 30 minute sermon.
Religion is odd.
Palin, Haley, and Bachmann are batshit crazy, moronic, and sociopaths. The fact that these women are free to walk around in public, especially Bachmann, much less hold office is proof enough to me that God has abandoned the planet and is off in another part of the Universe starting over.
So your preference is for a God who directly controls? You think we should be robots?
The Bible is pretty clear on the submissive wife thing…
Personally, I’m agnostic…but I have lessof a problem with folks like Bright, who actually seem to try to live by their Bible’s teachings, as opposed to those who interpret it to fit “modern sensibilities.
I suspect it may predict how they will perceive their Constitutional duties, if elected.
FWIW, TBG believes Michelle Bachmann is nuttier than a squirrel’s turd.
So it is odd that people of faith can separate the public sphere from the private sphere? I would have no trouble hiring or voting for a person of another faith or even of no faith if I was convinced that they were best suited for the position.
And I personally think the language about submission is open to some interpretation as to whether it is something that is demanded by God or is just Paul’s opinion on how a family should operate. Note, Paul also says in 1st Corinthians that it would be preferable if people did not marry at all and followed his example in leading chaste life. No one interprets that as Paul saying that marriage is a sin. It is also worth mentioning that many of the references to submission are in the context of everyone having to bear their own burden in this world (children respecting their parents, wive’s obeying husbands, and, yes, slaves obeying their masters) because the Christian’s focus should be on the next life rather than this one.

When my bitch doesn’t do what I say I beat her over the head with my Bible, then she listens.
God works in mysterious ways. Good thing for the good (and heavy) book.

I sometimes find it difficult to describe just how ignorant bright is. As a human being, I find it totally incredulous that his brain has the power to instruct his lungs to breath or his heart to pump. Nature is truly a wonder.
It’s the ancient and primitive brain stem that does it for him. He probably even has a bit of the reptilian holdover lying a bit forward, to add hunger, lust, night-vs-day dichotomy, maybe rage.

Personally I don’t particularly like anyone running for this seat as of yet, but Bright willingly supporting Bachmann is pretty damn sad.
Should Michelle be subservient to her “ex-gay” husband? Hmm…
She IS! Se my message above.

General Wesley Clark has filed for divorce in Arkansas for general indignities.
According to Arkansas law general indignities includes various degrees of intolerable treatment. It includes the following example list of offenses set down by the Arkansas Supreme Court:
‘Rudeness, vulgarity, unmerited reproach, haughtiness, contempt, contumeliousness, studied neglect, intentional incivility, injury, manifest disdain, abusive language, malignant ridicule and every other plain manifestation of settled hate, alienation, and estrangement’.
Now THAT’S funny.
Anne – Not a joke according to the link I posted above.
NOT A JOKE! Here is the link to the story…..
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2391131/EXCLUSIVE-General-Wesley-Clark-divorcing-wife-citing-HER-general-indignities-inflicted-despite-affair-woman-half-age.html
What a story! So sad for his devoted wife and that guy must be losing his marbles.
Those China babes really go after the old, wealthy and famous men.
Good observation, because it seems to me that Asians & Orientals seem to be popular for a second go-around. Shifty is infatuated with a Chinese divorcee who is so perfect she must be created by the Heavenly Angels…
Has she noticed you? Not to insult you, I mean they generally go after certain kind of men.
She left SC with her husband and subsequently divorced. We stayed in touch and talked a lot, but she moved to California to start a new business and to be nearer her family in Hong Kong. Shifty will be leaving Dixieland only going straight up…..
“studied neglect”
My new paradigm!
Actually, I was somewhat cautious about finding out what each of those terms meant However, I will work them into conversation with my current lady. The risk taken with doing this is high because she has a far quicker and incisive mind.

Having known Wil’s ex youth pastor, yeah, I think there’s a good chance Will totally whiffed on that piece of Christian doctrine which has been excepted pretty much everywhere by the church for a few thousand years. You’ll have to go to post 60’s, liberal churches to find places where it is controversial.
But yeah, secession – Bright should just totally base his entire campaign on that. It’s a winner, sure fire winner.

The word used in the statement being discussed, the Danvers Statement on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood is submission as the Bible defines submission – not subservience as this headline suggests. The quotation also ignores the first half of the statement which says men should not lead their homes selfishly.
In the family, husbands should forsake harsh or selfish leadership and grow in love and care for their wives; wives should forsake resistance to their husbands’ authority and grow in willing, joyful submission to their husbands’ leadership (Eph 5:21-33; Col 3:18-19; Tit 2:3-5; 1 Pet 3:1-7).

Will, do you not remember Bachmann’s comments that she was subservient to her husband? She wants to be POTUS but is subservient to that gay hating flamingly gay voodoo shrink who claims he has a therapy where you “pray the gay away.” Tha twould mean he would be in charge of the country. So Bright’s support for Bachmann was NOT inconsistent with his wanting women to be subservient. It is proof tthat he is as much of batshit crazy feeb as she is. Look, if you start with the understanding that most of these people who run for POTUS these day in both parties are fucking nuts to begin with, you won’t be confused. You keep trying to get then to be consistently this or that. Ain’t gonna happen. The are BUGFUCK!!!!
Look at Bachmann’s crazy eyes for God’s sake. God help us all if she were eve elected.
OK, I checked it out, and she said she is submissive to her loon hubby, not subserviant. Which could mean she’s a bottom he’s a top. A very nelly top. It takes all kinds. I don’t even want to speculate about shit they might do in bed. The mind recoils at the very thought.
Boz – Bachmann’s eyes are half-closed in the infamous photo of her attempting to eat a foot-long. She was almost in ecstasy while putting that thing in her mouth!
okay…i’m the idiot who wrote to free times…about the right wing dude kevin …whatever his name is …so…don’t listen…okay…being from sptbg?…this dude is out there…i mean…someone should look into his ah..ah…secretary…and their friendship thru the years…i would love for him to win….exposure would help my cause…guns in bars?…our own currency?….lindsey lou lou liberal?..lindsey’s a prick but come on…

DJ is correct. People forget the first half of the verse – that husbands are to love their wives as Christ loved the church. Think about that for a moment. The man is called to love his wife to the point of laying down his life for her. If you have that attitude, you are not going to knowingly lead your family in a harmful way.
But men can – with god’s apparent approval – ignore his wife and make decisions regardless of her wishes.
Women are not pets to be loved and ordered about. They are humans who have equal rights and equal dignities. We were NOT born to be ruled, no matter how much a man loves her.
Ruling a family and a marriage is very different than leading one. If a man ignores his wife and her wishes he is not acting toward her in a Christ like way. By love I don’t mean a desperate emotional attachment, but actions that derive from cherishing her and desire the best for his family. If a man doesn’t listen to his wife and consider her point of view, he’s a fool.
