SC Loses Company

You won’t hear S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley proclaim it a “great day in South Carolina” – nor will you hear the S.C. Department of Commerce say the news is “just right.” In fact the mainstream media probably won’t even cover the story.

Be that as it may, South Carolina is losing an undisclosed number of decent-paying jobs to Florida – the result of a company’s decision to partner with one of our rival ports.

According to The (Jacksonville, Florida) Daily Record, ETC Logistics USA “has proposed to relocate its headquarters, warehouse, and distribution center and logistics business from Fort Mill, S.C.” to a facility adjacent to the Port of Jacksonville. There, the paper reports it is pledging “to add 75 new, full-time jobs with an average wage of $47,581 plus benefits.”

Baltimore and West Palm Beach are also in the running for the company’s warehouse, dock, crane and forklift positions.

The company – which manufactures cooking oils – is reportedly interested in these locations due to the logistical advantages offered by the local ports.

“They have a plantation for palm oil in Guyana that’s grown dramatically,” a Jacksonville port official told the city’s Business Journal. “If they moved to Jacksonville, they could unload the oil from ships directly into their tanks.”

It’s not clear how many jobs South Carolina is going to lose in this deal. The Florida papers have not referenced any upper management positions, meaning ETC Logistics USA could be sending various components of its South Carolina operation to numerous other locations.

As we’ve stated repeatedly, South Carolina’s command economic approach to creating jobs – championed by Haley – has failed our state miserably. And things are getting worse, not better.

A report released earlier this year ranked South Carolina as one of the worst states in America try and make a living. Other recent reports showed the Palmetto State as having a terrible business tax climate as well as zero upward mobility for its citizens. Meanwhile our labor participation rate is hovering at record lows.

For the same reason Bi-Lo is moving to Florida. No income tax. All tax is theft, but if ya gotta have a tax, the Fair Tax is best. There is only one jolt, and that’s at the very beginning, but even if you’re not an actual producer, you won’t feel it or more than a month. You don’t even have to talk with an Australian accent!

The only thing I don’t like about the fair tax is that it’s not set in stone. It gives ’em room to wiggle. I think there should be a constitutional mandated flat rate on all people, no business taxes (as the end user pays all) and any adjustments are limited to 1 year at a time with a mandatory 90% approval rate of both houses.

No, the letting and funding of infrastructure contracts can be a legitimate function of government. However, if we had an FAA that was worth a crap, we would already have stable flying cars and hover craft, and no need for expensive roads and bridges.

Flying cars are a profoundly bad idea unless you want one stuck in your house. Hovercraft are terribly inefficient, and don’t have positive braking. That’s why they are essentially restricted to flat terrain and water/beach use such as assault craft and ferries.

You seem to know something about the subject. Did you know there are lots of plans which the FAA has quietly shelved – plans, which, if not derailed by government might have been allowed to evolve into something better than what you describe? We have the computer breadth and depth to have flying cars which can be programed not to crash into houses or each other. Have you seen the quadrotors and trirotors? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmWD76jwjbQ They are amazingly stable and can fly at any level, not just hover. But the FAA will not allow them to be tested at airports. They won’t give any meaningful answers when journalists ask why?

Bi-Lo went to FL because the Winn-Dixie facilities there were already large enough, since W-D had once been a much larger operation. Bi-Lo facilities were not large enough to hold both operations. BTW, the CORPORATE income taxes in FL are higher than SC.
Also, I guess you thought Jesus was endorsing theft when he said “give unto Ceasar that which is Ceasar’s”.

The CEO said, in an interview with the local Fla news station, two months ago, that one of the reasons he was moving to Fla was the lack of personal income tax for himself and his workers and his officers. The corporate income tax can be written off, totally as a cost of doing business. You can’t do that with your personal income tax, at his level, anyway. I take it you have never run a large company, as some on this blog have. The story was provided as an .ogg video site to reporters, and as such was not copyable. Sorry.

Also, when asked about the storage in Laurens, the CEO fumbled and said that, yeah, maybe they were bigger, but the “other factors” still made it a better deal.

Jesus was saying, “Pay your taxes so you won’t be killed by the repressive Roman government who wants to run your lives like the progressive fascist assholes they are.” And don’t tell me the Romans didn’t think they were progressive. Read your Tacitus and your Ceasar.

In a way, yes. Remember the thing about turning the cheek? But he also said that eventually, you would have to take up the sword, so you give them enough rope and if they don’t hang themselves, you help them along. He also asked,”… why do you kick against the pricks?” You pick your battles. The only absolutes are that God loves you and gives you freedom. It’s yours to waste.

Jesus’ major point was that CHARITY should be VOLUNTARY, NOT MANDATORY.

But, Jesus was also saying, “Pay your taxes so you won’t be killed by the repressive Roman government who wants to run your lives like the progressive fascist assholes they are.” And don’t tell me the Romans didn’t think they were progressive. Read your Tacitus and your Ceasar.

Interestingly enough, the word ??????? (render) as in ??????? ??? ?? Kaisaros (render unto Ceasar that which is his) is improperly translated as “give” in the newer translations. “Render,” which is the proper Elizabethan translation means “to squeeze or burn the fat from” is highly appropriate for taxes because that is exactly what a tax collector did. So, when the Knowable Person of God said to “render” unto Ceasar his tax, he was acknowledging the wickedness of government as well as its necessity, because the Sadducees and Pharisees would not voluntarily give up their fat. But it was also true that the Romans “rendered” taxes from everyone for projects that did not benefit them, such as temples to Zeus and schools for rich Senators and Presidents (of the Curial College.)

Also, you sound like a linear thinker caught at “C”. Go back to the previous discussion, or “A” and start over. You will see that it has very little to do with submitting to oppression.

Inland ports are a common aspect of transportation and logistics management. They perform some of the same tasks as traditional sea or river ports, but are geared to inter-modal or multi-modal transportation and distribution. The key to their value is usually ready access to a good high speed highway network and well-developed rail facilities. A new inland port facility will soon open in Greer.

This story reveals how the question of jobs is really a two-sided coin. Job creation is not simply luring companies from other states with tax-payer subsidized bribes, the issue of infrastructure plays as well — and that includes port facilities, railways, roads, schools, etc. When our political leaders choose to abet the success of other states in creating suitable infrastructure for businesses, we in SC lose. Those leaders should pay at the polls, but they won’t.

Do not complain now, people.

I have warned repeatedly in these pages that the Governor’s choices of SCSPA board members have no experience or expertise in marine terminal, steamship or logistics operations.

They are, however, political insiders and/or major contributors to her campaigns.

This past spring the legislature overwhelmingly approved her re-nomination of former Attorney General Henry McMaster to serve for seven years.

Neither FitsNews nor any other media outlet covered that confirmation process.

Too bad they are all establishment types would don’t understand the concepts of limited government, individual & economic freedom. I am sick and tired of my state of SC doing all they can for a company that wants to relocate here. It seems like about they time all of the tax breaks and other incentives run out they start looking else where. I hate to tell the state that gets a business like this that you may just be sitting holding the same bag we are getting given because of you. This hurts more than budget sheets. Put your personal self in the workers shoes. This means their house payments may be late, they will go on food stamps, which bareldy covers a few meals for a growing male child for five meals, and all that goes with such a change. And if I were someone thinking about going to work for a company like this I would be very hesitant and think a long time about the fact I may just be back in this same place and older. Contrary to what is said about liking seniors, that is a fat lie we all buy into until we get there and realize another lie we believed.
