S.C. Rep. Kirkman Finlay (R-Columbia) has accepted an invitation from Richland County council member Damon Jeter to participate in an anti-gang steering committee aimed at addressing the rash of recent lawlessness in the Midlands region of South Carolina. Also participating on the committee? Richland County (S.C.) sheriff Leon Lott and county councilman Seth Rose.
“I want my children to be safe and protected in their community” Finlay wrote in a letter accepting Jeter’s invitation.
We do, too … but under the “leadership” of corrupt Columbia mayor Steve Benjamin, the incompetent Columbia police department (CPD) and a group of exceedingly lenient “thug life” judges, this goal is becoming increasingly unattainable.
In preparation for his role on the committee, Finlay has been researching the issue extensively – conducting interviews with key players and studying existing “best practices” compiled by the U.S. Department of Justice (USDOJ). He’s also been examining the issue from a statewide perspective, acknowledging that South Carolina’s gang problem isn’t limited to its capital city.
Finlay was narrowly defeated by Benjamin in the 2010 mayoral race – a vote we’re guessing many people would like to have back.
Benjamin has been a disaster for Columbia … literally from the moment he won.

Say what you want about Kirkman but the guy is intelligent and doesn’t need to use his political position to line his own pockets. His motivation is simply to follow in his Father’s footsteps. Columbia would be a much better run City if he had been elected Mayor.
Absolutely!
