A thirteen-year-old South Carolina kid scored big on Jeopardy – a rare bright moment for the Palmetto State on the national stage.
Josiah Washington of Columbia won $22,000 on the popular game show, which requires contestants to come up with the correct questions in response to answers provided by host Alex Trebek.
The question Josiah nailed was on state postal abbreviations – as he correctly asked “What is Alabama and Louisiana?” in response to the answer “like New Mexico and Minnesota, these two states’ postal abbreviations are the reverse of one another.”
The show was filmed several months ago, but finally aired this week. For more on the story, check out this report in The (Columbia, S.C.) State newspaper.
Good for Josiah … and (for once) good for South Carolina.

Finally, a great day in SC. I’ll be damned.
The kid was the only one who got the Final Jeopardy question right, too. Not a hard question, but you only get so much time to think through 48 states, and I’m sure having to do it on-stage is a bit of an experience, so pretty impressive for a kid to be able to figure it out quickly enough and get it right. (One girl went for Alaska and Kansas, so he could have easily made a similar mistake.)
The bus stops and two Italian men get on. They seat themselves and engage in animated
conversation. The lady sitting behind them ignores their conversation at first, but her attention is galvanized when she hears one of the men say:
“Emma come first. Den I come. Two asses dey come together. I come again. Two asses, dey come together again. I come again and pee twice. Den I come one-a more.”
“You foul-mouthed people,” the lady yelled. “In this country we don’t talk about our sex lives in public!”
“Hey, coola-downa lady,” said the man. “Imma justa teachin’ my fren’ howa to spella
Mississippi.”
My eyes are wet with tears!

Shouldn’t he have said, “What are Alabama and Louisiana?”?
Of course, in the same situation, I’d be “libel” to say the same thing.
*ducks*
Wait, you’ve made a catastrophic error.
“TBG would be “libel” to….”
You sir, obviously have failed.

Not at all surprised to read in The State’s article that he is homeschooled.

Maybe he should be President of College of Charleston.
Over qualified.

That kid did well. He came from behind after the break and beat the pants off the little prick from Massachusetts in Final Jeopardy.
