The City of Columbia, S.C. has been named by Kiplinger’s as one of the top ten mid-sized “Great Places to Live” in America – a determination the personal financial firm must have reached prior to the city’s recent rash of gang-banging, lax law enforcement and questionable judicial decisions which permitted said gang-bangers to roam the streets while the charges against them were pending.

Or before the latest scandal involving millions of city tax dollars …

Yeah … anyway … to the official spin!

“Today’s announcement is the latest proof that, step by step, our vision of transforming Columbia into a truly world-class city and the most talented, educated and entrepreneurial city in America is becoming a reality,” said mayor Steve Benjamin.

Really, dude? Really?

Kiplingers, your credibility just called. It misses you …

I don’t know about after midnight but Mr. Friendly’s puts most places to shame starting at about 5:30 every day.

Since the list included towns in Iowa and Montana, I wouldn’t put a whole lot of stock in it.

I’m a native Columbian and glad to be able to live here nearby my friends and family. However, this place gets more and more corupt by the minute. (mayor, indulging gang violence, police dept, turning a blind eye to illegal gambling, bull st. bullshit, unrelenting tax increases, etc.) Why would anyone want to move here?

It’s rated as one of the cheapest places in the country to retire. According to an on an article on the US News web site, you can live here just as cheaply as you can in Costa Rica. Great, we have the same cost of living as an underdeveloped Central American country. Makes you proud, doesn’t it? Thanks Nikki!

It has almost nothing to do with Nikki Haley. I remember a prosperous, exciting time that used to be Columbia. It’s not been like that for about 5 years, but especially the last 3.

Like they say..Columbia…2 hours from some really nice places.

Cuck Harlotte = I lived there twice for a total of about 10 years. I wouldn’t want to live there any more than I would say, Spartanburg. The people are just as arrogantly dumb and the traffic is worse than I-85 on a bad day.

Complain about Charlotte all you want but its the Little Train that Could. Thirty years ago Atlanta and Richmond dominated the Southeast. They were locked in a struggle over who would become the economic center of the Southeast. Charlotte believed it could compete, and with the backing of its massive banks, began its efforts to transform itself into a city of the New South.

Today, Richmond is no longer in the picture for that title. Charlotte is the third largest banking center in the country, behind New York and San Francisco, and its the center of the fourth fastest growing Metropolitan Statistical Area in the country. Atlanta and Richmond did not even make the top 10. Has Charlotte displaced Atlanta as the Queen of the South? Not yet, and probably never. Its hard to catch up to a city twice your size, and the banking recession was a major blow. But the unofficial motto of Charlotte, is “I think I can,” and I would not be so fast to write them off.

Columbia, the place of 100 degree humid days, beats the crap out of most other SC “cities” if for no other reason than it is the home USC. It does have 5 points, a real zoo, is is a truly central capitol, 2 interstates, and its only 75 minutes from Charlotte. Heck if your into it you can even join a white only country club.
