University of South Carolina superstar Jadeveon Clowney is reportedly in talks with rapper Jay Z about signing with his Roc Nation Sports label.
Founded earlier this year, the company manages the careers of athletes like New York Yankees’ second baseman Robinson Cano, New York Giants’ wide receiver Victor Cruz and NBA star Kevin Durant, among others. Apparently the contact between Jay Z and Clowney is permissible under NCAA rules because the mogul is only offering Clowney information about his firm’s marketing services.
Of course we suspect the NCAA has a file open on the matter regardless …
Jay Z was recently certified as a players’ agent with both the National Basketball Association and Major League Baseball. Were he an NFL agent – which it appears he will be in short order – his contact with Clowney would be a violation of NCAA rules.
Clowney is currently projected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft. In fact he would have likely been the No. 1 pick in the 2013 draft had he been eligible. The 6-foot-6, 274-pound defensive end was a unanimous All-American last year – setting school records for sacks (13) and tackles for losses (23.5) in leading Steve Spurrier’s Gamecocks to their second consecutive 11-win season.
Then there was his jaw-dropping hit on Michigan running back Vincent Smith in the 2013 Outback Bowl – which won an ESPY Award last week as the “Best Sports Play” of the year.
Focus on Clowney has intensified this offseason. Earlier this week, for example, we received unconfirmed reports alleging Clowney was tooling around the state in a new BMW convertible. USC officials have yet to comment on those rumors.

How are they living in poverty? They’ve got room and board, they get their books paid for, they’re going to school for free (out of state tuition would equate to around $100,000 over four years). How is this different than any other poor college student who is having to pay out of pocket for all of these things. I say pay the players, cut the academic scholarship, make college sports a farm-camp for the professional ranks like the NHL and MLB have. If they want to go to class, they go as a regular student, if they want to sit around an apartment instead of getting some bullshit degree that has no use in the real world, they sit around around the apartment. Make it so there’s no ties to the colleges.

The athletes are restricted in their ability to get a PT job in school, and unless your parents have money you are pretty broke. Your board is a debit card that only works in campus dining halls. Most college guys want to eat off campus every now and then or take a girl they like on a date. The NCAA makes that very difficult. I recall an anecdote from Tim Tebow about not even having enough money to buy his parents gifts and having to try to come up with nice things he could do for them that did not cost money.
I had a job during the summer to pay for my college spending money. I worked summers with guys who were on college sports teams, most worked football or basketball camps and were paid very well for the short time they were at camp.
It has been a while, but I believe the rules used to ban jobs, then they eased it to let them earn up to 2,000 during the academic year. Since football players all enroll in summer sessions (since they take so few credits in the fall), arguably the academic year is 12 months long unless the NCAA has addressed that problem. Even then, the year round aspect of football, which would make work difficult as well.
Don’t they have to maintain a minimum of 12 credits for the Fall and Spring semesters to be considered full-time students?
Nope, amazingly anything above 6 credit hours is considered full-time. Most college athletes carry that minimum load during the season. Then they make up the other 2 classes during the summer.

Remember no one ever said these kids had to play college football to go pro. They only have to be out of high school for at least 3 years before they go pro,. Lets say they come to play for from out of state. They are given a 4 years full scholarship. That comes to roughly $45,000 a year if it were in a “how much for this job value”. I don’t know of any 17-18 year olds with no college degree and zero job experience that would make that legally. Not too mention they get in schools with lower academic standards than non athletes. .
And not one dime of that is taxable income.
Plus, they eat all over town. Free.

groups, particularly the kids, who are entitled to live their dream of one day playing
D-1 college sports. There should be racial quotas for these teams, which should
resemble America. Which means more White players, and there should be some Asians too. And Hispanics. Well the kicker at least.
And at least one Inuit. There is not a single Inuit on the USC football team. Why? Years of discrimination and racial profiling, that’s why. I am an Inuit, and you don’t know what is like until you have walked a mile in my mukluks. Try getting on an elevator and having white people think it is you that smells like fish. And if you come to visit us you don’t get to screw my wife. Sorry. Everywhere I go people lock up their kayaks. How do you think that makes me feel?

I told him he’s probably right, but if a name change was forced that I suggested “Washington Blackskins” as a replacement and more reflective of the team makeup.
Unfortunately I never got his opinion of my suggestion as he just stopped talking.
