Back in May we published a piece from one of our readers about lengthy delays in South Carolina’s concealed weapons permit (CWP) process – delays which have forced thousands of law-abiding Palmetto State citizens to go without their weapons for months on end while bureaucrats at the S.C. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) twiddle their thumbs.
“Even if you renew your permit on the first day possible, and they process ‘as scheduled’ on day 90, you are legally prohibited from carrying until it arrives in the mail,” our guest columnist wrote. “This is intentional infringement upon my Second Amendment Rights, and the rights granted to me by our states CWP legislation.”
Until our report was published, SLED wasn’t even publicly notifying CWP holders about these unconscionable delays.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is experiencing a tremendous influx of concealed weapon permit applications, both new and renewal. The applications are processed in the order in which they are received, starting from the date SLED actually receives the application. Processing is taking the full ninety days on both new and renewals. Please know that we are processing all applications as quickly as possible, while maintaining the quality of backgrounds required by law. Your patience is greatly appreciated during this time.
Yeah … and this from an agency answerable to Nikki Haley, a rabidly pro-Second Amendment governor (who has a CWP herself). How exactly does that work?
Nowhere in the SLED disclaimer is the following language …
Because we’re lazy and stupid – and because you don’t deserve to be placed in danger as a result of our slackness and incompetence – we’re going to let you continue legally carrying your firearms during the permitting process.
In fact the opposite is true. SLED requires citizens to cease carrying their weapons while these new concealed weapons permits are being processed.

This website does not believe in the notion of a concealed weapons permit – or any government permit for any weapon. In fact the whole point of the Second Amendment is that you don’t have to ask anybody for permission to carry a weapon.
Which is why we will continue to call for civil disobedience of any law which infringes upon this fundamental liberty …

Priority should be given for RENEWALS because the individuals’ history is known and the process should take almost NO TIME to complete. Somebody is getting priority at SLED. Overall the excuse for delay is a crock of possum doo-doo.

I first got mine about 4 years ago. Back then, CWP applications and gun sales were through the roof because people were unsure what gun control laws Obama might try to pass since he had just gotten into office. It definitely took past 90 days then. I was wondering if all of those people were renewing, plus more people getting new CWPs from the most recent gun control debates, and maybe SLED is just getting overwhelmed.

Back when the Legislature was in session and the restaurant carry bill was in play, I recall reading a bill proposal on line which had verbiage in it to the effect that after a person’s CWP expires, for a period of one year, they are only subject to a penalty of something like a $10 or $25 fine if they are carrying with the expired permit in their possession. I am not sure if this is CURRENT law or PROPOSED law. Can someone verify which? Such a law would make sense, given SLED’s inability to COMPLY WITH THE LAW and have the permits to the applicants within 90 days.
At the time, I was reading bills which included both existing law verbiage and proposed law verbiage in their texts. If all you have to worry about is a minor fine like this, I would continue to carry. The penalty is token and not likely to seriously mar your record IF you should be caught. I have renewed my permit twice now (8+ years) and have only once had to show the permit, at a DUI/DL checkpoint. I’ve not been stopped because someone spotted my gun.
Back when I worked the grocery store, there were one or two customers who used their CWP to verify age to get a six pack. Great stuff. Didn’t mind at all myself, good to know a few customers were armed just in case.

If you are going to advocate disobeying gun laws, you might want to at least provide the potential criminal penalties for violations. Then folks can make an informed decision. I believe it carries up to a 10 year sentence, but I am not a criminal lawyer.

The funny thing is that reapplying online isn’t allowed until you reach the 90-days-until-expiration mark, but the form you have to mail in suggests you mail it in 120-to-90 days in advance of expiring. What kind of shit is that?

The hammer is down, so it will take quite a bit of effort to fire round # 1. The “Safety” lever on these guns also acts as a de-cocker. Safety off, hammer down, is the accepted safe method to carry this weapon. There is not a “Cocked and locked” option. It appears that the finger could just as easily be resting on the outside of the trigger guard, and not on the trigger.
On another note, no person that wants any level of comfort is going to carry a gun that large concealed.

Mike Pitts this year got SO much heat from SC CWP holders that the fee increase had to be amended out of the bill. So…SLED is upset that they are NOT going to get the money they don’t deserve. So if you filed your renewal prior to the expiration of your existing permit you can continue to carry. I would also carry proof of my renewal application. However, this might not prevent some dumb-ass cop from locking you up anyway. But then you would have a false-arrest suit, maybe.
The S.C.
