The S.C. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating the City of Columbia, S.C. police department (CPD), multiple sources familiar with the probe tell FITS.

Details at this point are hazy, but we’re told the investigation centers around an as-yet-undetermined amount of “missing money” at a foundation established to support the scandal-plagued Capitol City law enforcement agency.

In possibly related news, a captain with the police department has recently been placed on administrative leave – although FITS has been unable to independently verify his name or confirm whether this suspension is related to the SLED probe.

Calls to the CPD regarding the suspended individual were referred to City Hall.

News of the SLED probe comes two months after former CPD Chief Randy Scott resigned under questionable circumstances. Of course Scott has friends in local law enforcement circles, and quickly landed on his feet.

Ruben Santiago was named interim chief in late April after Scott’s resignation.

UPDATE: FITS has confirmed the name of the suspended officer as Captain David Navarro. And while we’re still chasing down the details, we’re told his suspension is related to the SLED probe.

Wow: GREAT Thought Jay.
If she had the guts to do that, she’d be a NATIONAL Hero overnight…but she’d have to wear a bullet-proof vest to protect from the New Black Panthers and DOJ Snipers, who’d try to El-Reno her (See Janet-Waco)…

Funny coincidence – “El Reno” is the Oklahoma City suburb where the hard-times have their own state pen.

The city, the county, the schools, the public utility commissions and 99% of all the elected officials are criminals.

No leadership + too many years of an arrogant newspaper / media that covered up the corruption based on race = Voter suppression and a pack of leftist loons stealing the taxpayers’ money and destroying the community.

We need business leaders, religious leaders and regular citizen leaders to speak out and take back the city and county from these ‘race-card’ playing criminals.

Let’s start with a statewide law that allows for “recall” of elected officials in every local or state office. Get ‘Queen Jean’ & party bosses out of the mix – make all local / county elections nonpartisan.

Remember: Leftwing (Republican-attack–only) Muckraker Cory Hutchins was handed, but Hot-Potatoed the Video Gambling Evidence, because it involved democrats, and especially black democrats (the un-touchable, lord gods of their party)…..

If it was so bad, Hutchins cowered from it…no telling how corrupt this could be. Obama has used the IRS to target Americans that he hates. And he even went after a reporter’s elderly parents…

That’s BAD….but these Ds think they are gods..and their minions, like Hutchins, believe they are…

Evidence that the Peter Principle is at work again–you rise to your level of incompetence. The Columbia Police Dept. Is all over enforcing city parking meter regulations and arresting underage drinkers in Five Points. Beyond that level, they are a joke.

I don’t hold out a lot of hope that SLED will find any meaningful corruption at CPD. Most days, I struggle to believe that SLED (as an agency) could find its own ass, using both hands. They seem to be incapable of finding and successfully prosecuting corruption when powerful political machines are involved or benefiting from the corruption. Charlie A, Bob C, and the Lexington Crime Ring, are just a few such entities that SLED has never seemed to muster the courage to do anything about, other than maybe sweep things under the rug.

That said, we can always hope. Former Deputy Chief I P Greene, in an interview with WIS-TV many months ago, was asked why Randy Scott might want to single her out or target her for termination. Ms Greene made comments to the effect that she tried to do things “the right way”, “by the book”, or similar analogy. This is true with regard to her. She is a straight-up character with more integrity in the last joint of her pinky finger than Randy Scott or his cronies have in all of their body or soul. Getting on with the story, in that interview, Ms Greene made reference to Randy Scott’s “Police Foundation” and the lack of accountability with regard to handling of funds collected for it.

If you think back, Scott and some of his officers were collecting donations from patrons at the Hardees on Piney Grove Rd at one time and possibly had other fund-raising events going on. Scott made comments about what his “Police Foundation” was going to do with the funds and cited things like helping officers who were going through a bad time and “college scholarships”. I did a major eye-roll when he mentioned the scholarships. There are literally thousands of college scholarship programs around the country. Most barely pay for a semester if that much, therefore making them pretty much pointless, except for being a “feel good” move and getting good publicity for this cause or group and that one.

Getting back to Ms Greene’s interview, she correctly noted how CPD no longer presents its retiring officers with their guns or even their badges upon retiring from that agency. This is a time-honored tradition in many departments and, IMHO, a good one. Giving a retiring officer his or her gun and badge on retirement is a small but nice token of appreciation for the many missed birthdays, missed recitals, missed baseball games, missed holidays with family, and other privations endured by both the officers and their families because the job needed them at those times.

Ms Greene made reference to people who were connected to Scott’s Police Foundation who were neither police officers nor retirees, yet who were somehow coming into possession of CPD badges. She had rightfully questioned this practice, along with handling of Foundation funds and indicated that her comments were not well-received by Scott and his cronies.

I don’t know if the Police Foundation has anything to do with this, but as I said earlier in the post, “we can hope.” Daddy Leon is a powerful man and I am sure he will do all in his considerable power (and that of the machine he is a part of) to save Baby Dumpling Scott from any prosecution.

You must be a city employee since you sure know a lot of information about CPD (previous posts). Also, you must be green with envy of SLED. Not all officers are friends or family members of influential sheriffs, chiefs, or politicians. Keep applying and one day you’ll get a job there. I’ll get my chance in a few years with a little more experience.

I remember the days (JP Strom era) when most cops I knew either wanted to work for SLED or at least be as much like them as possible. They kicked ass and took names. The administrations since Strom have progressively emasculated the agency and a lot of their agents, unfortunately.

Long gone are the days of people like big Phil Watkins, Dollard, Dan DeFreeze, and the like.

As for these days, I have no envy of anyone who works at SLED. There are still some good people there, but their leadership has done much to destroy their effectiveness.

Quite a few times on various boards such as this one, I have made light of how SLED just never seems to be able to get off the ground with a real investigation into corruption if an agency and its miscreants are protected by a large, powerful, political machine.

Lee County Sheriff, no pull, no real influence, and no problem racking up charges on him (many were Federal, I believe). He deserved what he got, but again, he was not protected by a large political machine.

Police Chief cum Mayor Preacher from the Orangeburg area. No problems going after him for various questionable activities. Of course, he was not protected by a large machine, either.

Saluda County Sheriff Jason Booth, has been rumored to be involved in numerous serious acts of malfeasance for quite some time. It took a while, but they finally got him…. on one thing. Booth wasn’t part of a particularly powerful machine, but his Dad was a SLED agent.

Lexington Crime Ring, all you hear are crickets. That is because there is a very powerful political machine and network of good ol’ boys who have each-other’s backs. No harm will likely come to them.

Columbia PD hierarchy, installed with no small amount of back alley dealing from a powerful Sheriff, who is part of a very large and powerful political machine which covers Columbia and Richland County. Watch Navarro’s allegations get swept under the rug in record time.

Unless the fired cop has real proof, this will go nowhere. Too bad, as the lid needs to come off of all the recent City and County corruption, starting with the wreck on the night of the election, to the shady business dealings, the botched hiring of Ms. Wilson, the Palmetto Compress bail out, the embarrassing Five Points and Vista crime waves, the uptick in gang violence, the manipulation of the retirement system for Chief Scott, his mysterious leave of absence, the bakery murder and the failure to arrest a known violent suspect, and now this. Oh yeah, and the Miz Lillie escapade and the Billion Dollar Bus fund. This city and county is rank with corruption and self dealing.

I am so glad that Investagator Scott was able to get his much needed assistant. I seems to me that Mr. Lott sure does know how to take care of his PTSD suffering officers.

Has anyone put together that Scott, Navarro, and Santiago were all mid and top brass for Leon Lott and notice he has been awful quiet during this mess! All three of them use to claim the hard works of their subordinates to climb the ladder at RCSD and mysteriously those above them would resign and fall, sounds like a trend. The only way you are going to get CPD back honorable again is get the politicians out of the “real POLICE” business, but Charlie Austin screwed that up! Sounds to me like Leon is setting the city up for a take over to double his salary and screw Columbia. Look at the fire service, they combine city county services and it went to shit and forced most of the volunteers to quit. We all know how Richland County operates….. You suck at this job so lets create a new position and not fire you because you’re a token black person and let several other people go who do work to keep you around. Sounds to me like it is all a set up and the only people who suffer from this is the citizens.

It all goes down to the character of the person representing the job. Temptation is abundant out in the real world. The question remains for each individual is how strong are they against temptation. One of the deadly sins known as greed seems to be driving the latest mess at CPD. Time for some cleaning house and some real men taking these positions of importance at CPD.
