Former S.C. Treasurer Thomas Ravenel (R-Charleston) is mulling a primary challenge to U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (RINO-S.C.) in 2014, multiple sources familiar with his thinking tell FITS.
Not only that, Ravenel is considering pumping more than $5 million of his fortune into the effort – an investment which would immediately propel him into the top tier of challengers despite his checkered past.
The reality TV star – whose political career flamed out spectacularly in 2007 when he was busted for cocaine possession – reportedly discussed his future plans with Charleston, S.C. radio host Tara Servatius early Wednesday.
FITS is attempting to obtain an audio file of that interview …
Sources tell FITS Ravenel is also considering a third party challenge against Graham next November.
“Both options are on the table,” one of Ravenel’s advisors told us.
So far only one contender has emerged as a credible potential rival to Graham – Charleston, S.C. businesswoman Nancy Mace.
Two other challengers – S.C. Sen. Lee Bright (R-Spartanburg) and former U.S. congressional candidate Richard Cash – are viewed as too far to the right on social issues to mount credible statewide candidacies.
Mace has been working around the clock to line up support from limited government groups at the national level – groups which are eager to stroke checks against the uber-liberal Graham.

Hey, I remember those brown Orange Crush bottles, too! The drink inside looked more like natural orange juice, without the artificial neon color of today’s version. They actually tasted better back then, “IF” you got a bottle without a deceased life form in it. Funny you should say that about the mouse in the bottom. My dad worked at a small textile concern and among other things, he was supervisor over their loading dock. He came home one day telling about one of his shipping crew guys who bought an Orange Crush from one of the vending machines in the plant. This was in the day of those brown glass bottles that were returned with everything from cigarette butts to God-only-knows-what in them, for cleaning and re-use.
Anyway, the hapless shipping room guy takes a big swig of the OC and swishes it around in his mouth and violently spits it out, along with a multitude of curse words. There was a slug in his first and only swig from the bottle. As a kid who enjoyed any and everything gross and disgusting, this was one of my favorite stories for a long time.

I don’t know that Conservative, LIbertarian, Liberal, would play into it as much as pro-Graham and anti-Graham. Usually, when you try and unseat an incumbent who has been in for far too long (as has Graham), you have two distinct camps; those who want the incumbent out on his ear and those who want to keep him.
If you have three people running, regardless of idiologies, the two running against the incumbent are going to split the vote against him and of course, those for the incumbent, will have a solid, cohesive, front.

I don’t give a shit about personal transgressions. I care about my tax money and an intrusive, police-statish, inefficient, and dangerous government. I voted for Sanford for the same exact reason:he saves money and has a principled stance against government. I would prefer Bruce Carroll, though, but I doubt a gay man would do well in the upstate.
Either way, Graham must go. I will pull the lever for a third party before I would vote Graham back into office.
