While most states are moving to take guns out of the classroom, South Dakota is headed in the other direction.
As of July 1, South Dakota is the only state in the nation to permit school employees to carry weapons on campus. The law was actually signed several months ago but it didn’t take effect until this week. Obviously there are several districts across the country which have passed similar provisions, but South Dakota is the first to implement such a proposal on a statewide level.
Frankly we don’t see the controversy associated with this law … school employees wishing to carry on campus must first receive permission from the governing district and receive training from local law enforcement.
That makes sense to us … as does the deterrent/ protection this new law will provide against school shootings.
“A (Connecticut school shooter Adam) Lanza-like psycho entering a school would be greeted with the element of surprise,” writes Phillip Hodges at Godfather Politics. “He wouldn’t have any idea who was and who wasn’t armed. It would actually be better to have a few armed school officials carrying concealed than to have a school security guard who might as well have a target emblazoned on his torso.”
We agree …
And have said as much previously.
South Carolina law prohibits school employees (and anybody who isn’t a law enforcement official) from carrying a weapon onto school property – concealed or otherwise.
What do you think of this issues? Vote in our poll and post your thoughts in our comments section below …
UPDATE: There’s actually a Tennessee law which went into effect on July 1 that permits teachers with previous police training to carry guns on campus, but it is very narrowly drawn.

Anyone with a CWP should be allowed. Extensive background check plus proven basic knowledge of guns and gun laws, plus somewhat decent aim = CWP. The permit is government explicitly stating you are capable of concealed carry, it should let you carry almost anywhere with very rare exceptions.
CWP holders should have more rights, that is all there is to it.
100% agree, Smirks!!!!!!
I don’t like it. I agree/believe that anyone anywhere should be allowed to carry a firearm, without a CWP, and that all states should be forced ( based on the only reasonable definition of the second amendment) to be open carry at all times (over the age of 16? 18? whatever). I definitely agree that the schools would be much safer than they are now for everyone (but the jackass). I further believe that we would not have any of this NSA,CIA,DEA,BS crap going on.
That said, with the current teachers union, I can see many people being shot first with questions asked later. Then they would stand and simply say ‘It was legal’. I think in many places this would be the case. I can here little Johnny or Jane asking ‘Why did you shot my dad? He always picks me up’. and some militant little feminazi saying ‘Well Johnny, your dad didn’t bring the court papers with him this time and I think your Mommy’s should have you’.
Personally I like the idea of them being allowed in SD, based on a wholly un-researched and prejudiced opinion, because I simply perceive them as being more conservative (the people, not Tom Dachsund).
Extensive background checks… Now what does that entail? Collecting physical samples from applicants, so a larger government data base on individuals can be created?
Probably. Smirks is quirky at times. If you ask him he’ll/she’ll be glad to write you a book.

I give it 6 months before a kid takes a gun out of his teacher’s drawer and fires it in the school.
And when that happens, the authorities need to come arrest your Ignorant Liberal @$$ for giving the student the idea…
And then I’ll Laugh my @$$ off at some Dumb@$$ liberal whining about speech that results in violence…because you use that as a weapon to attack the people you hate…
You Stupid Some Beeches run your F#*k!*g mouths, but you never account for the $#!* you spew…
Damn, just say it. Enough with the symbols.
He thinks the Jesus can’t read his shit this way.

Any CWP holder knows you NEVER, NEVER, NEVER put your gun down in a public situation, for any reason. If her students are that wicked, they should be sent back to Detroit.
And I may not say it quite as eloquently as Mr. GT says it here, I agree with him, as well. Not so much because you say it, but because you expect it. When Liberals expect things, they do things to make them happen.
Ok, the deal here is that the teacher or CWP holder packs. You don’t leave it in a drawer. You don’t put the ammo in one place and the gun in another. You don’t carry without having one in the chamber. What are you going to do, ask the shooter, please, just wait a sec, I have to go get the ammo. Or, pull it out of the desk drawer, if you’re close enough, then have to put one in the chamber.
No, you are trained, you know what to do. You have the weapon on your side at all times. No one touches it, it is always under your direct control.
Law abiding citizens should have the right to carry, concealed or not, loaded or not, anywhere in the country.
Do that and watch the senseless shootings go down, or, at least the number of folks that get shot be dramatically reduced.
MSM only touts whatever supports gun control. You almost never hear in MSM about successful defensive weapon use.
Or at least the death toll including the assailant much more often.

Oh well, IF that happens, it would be so much worse than a heavily-armed, active shooter, totally disregarding the Gun-Free-Zone status of the school and taking his sweet time in slaughtering unarmed employees and children in the minutes before police arrive, wouldn’t it?
As has been said, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

Georgre Zimmerman was lucky to be packin’…or he would have gotten his head bashed in…(even more than he already did)…
Hopefully the would-be Trayvon Martins of the US “Learned a lesson ’bout a messing w/ the life of carrying man”…(my regrets to the late Jim Croce)….
Sad that a young man had to go that route…but if you live by violence, violence can bite you…
Zimmerman would have been even luckier if he had actually waited in his vehicle for the police to arrive instead of stalking an unarmed kid walking in a neighborhood he had every right to be in.
A thug may jump and beats a man. An idiot Thug, jumps and beats a man who is packing…
Somebody teach that woman how to hold a sidearm before she hurts herself or someone else.
But if that’s a SigSauer .40, she could be cocking the hammer..? Mebbe?
Looks like a Glock to me. Only four rules to a Glock:
Keep your finger off the trigger.
Keep your finger off the damn trigger.
Keep your damn finger off the trigger.
Keep your damn finger off the damn trigger.
Well, if it is, you are absolutely, fandangofutely, mohamamutely right..
But if she promised to visit me in the hospital..
100% agreed.
Definitely a Glock.
So that GrandTango can understand these rules,
Keep your booger-hook off the bang-switch.
Etc, etc.
I just noticed that. She’s gonna be a bleeder. (when that slide goes back)

‘course now that I’m looking at it, again, I’ll be visiting her for her left thumb surgery…… LOOK, could we just establish that she’s a MODEL being posed by a photographer, neither of whom know much about sidearms? But can we also establish that she is really, REALLY cute? Mmkay?
100% agreed.

As an educator that used to work in South Carolina, I’m all for arming some school employees. In fact, I just might move to South Dakota to get the chance to do so (beautiful country up there). I would hope that anyone carrying would be required to be a little more accurate than most — maybe yearly qualifications.
Here’s my only concern — having been forced to document poor performance in teachers for 1.5 years before being able to dismiss them due to tenure laws, well, that could make dismissals a little “rough.”
There are some beautiful areas but the winters suck.
I hear that. If it weren’t for the wifey, I’d live in the islands or Fla. I hate cold weather.

my only concern regarding teachers carrying, is that I think it should be a requirement for them to only carry on their person, not in a purse or in a bag. Too much risk for purse carry, given the average IQ of SC Students.

Training from local law enforcement…
What a joke! Cops routinely spray bullets everywhere when they shoot. Someone needs to train law enforcement in proper shooting technique.
Wow. “Routinely”? “Everywhere”? Those are strong statements.

Further Update: Kansas also had a law effective 1 July allowing teachers to be armed in school. The insurance carrier for 85 percent of Kansas schools has given notice that they will not insure any school system that allows teachers to be armed.

As soon as a 115 pound female teacher gets that gun taken away from her by one of her 250 pound 11th graders who then shoots someone you will see the downside of having more weapons in schools. My ex was a teacher and assaults by students on teachers are not as rare as you think.
