Months after telling her colleagues she planned on stepping down as chief justice of the S.C. Supreme Court, former liberal activist Jean Toal shocked her fellow justices this week by informing them of her intention to seek another term.
Or part of another term, anyway …
According to state pension law, the 69-year-old Toal is prohibited from serving an additional ten-year term – unless of course she’s able to work out an alleged quid pro quo with members of the S.C. General Assembly to extend her reign past 2015. That seems highly unlikely at this point … in fact several of our sources say Toal may even face problems making it that far.
“People are pissed,” one judicial branch insider told us. “She made it clear she was stepping down and (people) made plans based on that. I think she will find the screening process not to her liking if she follows through on this decision.”

Once among the most powerful political figures in the state, Toal has seen her influence wane in recent years. In fact earlier this year she was dealt a humiliating defeat by lawmakers – who narrowly rejected her hand-picked selection for an at-large family court seat.
Don’t get us wrong, she’s still got tremendous pull … but she’s nowhere near as dominating a political force as she once was.
A longtime liberal (like most recent “Republican” S.C. Supreme Court appointees), Toal has repeatedly demonstrated her susceptibility to corruption – as evidenced by the infamous 2007 bar exam scandal (broken exclusively by FITS) as well as the ongoing shadiness demonstrated by her attorney discipline office.
She’s also been involved in several traffic incidents allegedly involving alcohol …

McConnell is in on this plan. Toal has kicked Pleicones out who would have been chief justice until February 2015 when he turns 72. Toal will be 72 in August, 2014 permitting McConnell to get elected in February 2014 and giving time for the GOP to elect another candidate for Lt. Gov. If Toal and McConnell had allowed Pleicones in, McConnell would have to have gone through the 2014 Lt. Gov. election.

Beatty and Kittredge have too much back room baggage. Hearn is the only one on the present SC that could be in line to take Toal’s position. Toal will be 72 on August 11, 2015. Her stepping down now would have given Glenn a good shot at being her replacement avoiding his statewide election in 2014 to keep his job as Lt Gov. Toal was born on August 11, 1943. She will be 70 in a few months. By her staying to August 2015, she kicks Glenn in the posterior. He can not win a statewide election if Sheheen gets a Toal ruling supporting Rainey regarding his ability to file a lawsuit against Gov Haley as a private citizen.

She is corrupt as the day is long. She had Cam Lewis sitting beside her last time people came forward and testified just how corrupt she is. Cam has had health problems and is not working now. My money is she will have Dick Harpootlian and IS Leevy Johnson on either side this time. It’s going to be a great show. She “owns” at least 32 lawyer legislators that we can count right now.

What’s the problem here? The state Bar has gotten exactly what it deserves. Can you think of anyone more appropriate for the “have a wreck, get a check” crowd? This is one more reason why the only people who can stand to be in the presence of lawyers are other lawyers.

2. People who went through a nasty divorce and did not get what they think they deserved.
3. People who tried to screw someone and a lawyer prevented them from doing it.
4. People who injured someone and a lawyer made them pay for it.
5) people who were married to one and who got fucked over for no reason. More common than you might think.
So you are type 2. Maybe next time you need a better lawyer.

If you don’t like the criminal justice system where every accused person gets a lawyer who is obligated to do his best to prevent them from being convicted, change the system. But i’ll bet you will regret the change if you are ever falsely accused of a crime.
