Lowcountry lawyer Marlon Kimpson – an attorney with the Charleston, S.C.-based mass tort firm of Motley Rice – will seek the State Senate seat vacated this week by Robert Ford, who resigned amid a probe into multiple alleged campaign finance violations.

Kimpson – a former pension fund attorney – has been at Motley Rice for more than a dozen years, playing “an integral role in developing the firm’s catastrophic injury, aviation, asbestos and securities fraud practice groups.”

Here’s his bio …

Sources tell FITS Kimpson’s campaign will be “very well-funded.”

No clue yet whether other candidates will jump into the Democratic primary for this seat, which is the only game in town in light of the fact this is a gerrymandered “majority minority” district. Filing for the seat will officially open on June 21 and run through July 1 – with the primary held on August 13 and the general election held October 1.

Given the demographic composition of the district, no credible “Republican” candidate is expected to file.

There will be several folks in the race before it’s over. Most of us in the district think Marlon is way too slick.

She is a negro so she should be a credible candidate. However, her columns in the P&C are laughable.

He’s obviously a major upgrade from Sen. Ford. If he’s been a success at that firm, he’s clearly sharp and not afraid to work his tail off. Totally confused by Phillip’s comments below. You do realize that Kimpson’s firm would sue on behalf of alleged asbestos victims, not defend the companies alleged to be responsible for same?

“Pension Fund” doesn’t FITS crap all over himself about that, regularly???
But let me guess: FITS “LIKES” Marlon, (like he LIKES Ford) and he’s a well-meaning D, so it’s OK…

From his bio — “Martindale-Hubbell® recognizes Marlon as a BV® rated attorney.”

So his peers consider him a second-rate attorney.

“Sources tell FITS Kimpson’s campaign will be ‘very well funded.'”

Fine, wonderful.

So he’s loaded, and so are Joe Rice and Ron Motley.

They gave over a million bucks to John Edwards presidential campaign.

Let’s hope more people enter the race.

Not disagreeing with your points, but a BV rating is actually not bad…

True indeed – AV generally (depending upon the year) means an attorney is 92nd percentile or higher. I simply meant that I wouldn’t call a potentially 90th percentile (nationally) rated attorney as “second-rate.” Most never get rated at all…

He’s not really a lawyer, in the true sense of it all. I doubt he has ever seen the inside of a courtroom other than as a 3rd stringer, carrying boxes. They use him to go out into the communities (the black ones) and round up the folks for their class action lawsuits. He couldn’t try a car wreck case if his life depended upon it, let alone anything more substantial.

That being said, his family has been political from day one so he probably has a good shot of winning.

I for one am extremely pleased to hear that Mr. Kimpson is running. He has a stellar representation in the community, and is the type of person we should all wish to have representing us. His professional accomplishments are impressive, but he’s also just an all around good guy, hard working family man. We will all be very lucky to have him in the State Senate serving South Carolina!!!

Clowney should drop out of USC, move to Charleston, and run for this seat. Having already won the Heisman unanimously for 2013 prior to the first down even being played, the time is ripe for him to enter politics and continue his meteoric rise to fame and glory.

While it may be fun for some to write nasty and unfounded things as comments to articles like this, the truth is Kimpson is a stand up guy. Ford was a crook and a pawn of the republicans. While some have commented on “jury Mandoring” the truth is the Republicans have formed the district in such a way to consolidate the Dem votes in as few of districts as they can to maximize their seats in the house and senate. So while it is try that a Dem will most likely win, it is with no conspiracy by the Dems or Kimpson.

Kimpson by the way is a solid person in our community, and deserves to be commented on honestly and respectfully.
