The Left’s Excuse? Government Is Too “Vast”

Eager to insulate U.S. President Barack Obama against the fallout from multiple scandals (IRS, USDOJ and Benghazi), one of his top former advisors is offering up an interesting excuse. David Alexrod, Obama’s former senior strategist, claims the reason Obama is unable to sufficiently keep tabs on all the corruption in Washington, D.C. these days is because … wait for it … government is so big.

“Apparently some folks down in the bureaucracy – you know, we have a large government – took it upon themselves to shorthand these applications for tax-exempt status,” Axelrod told MSNBC host Joe Scarborough, referring to the IRS’ policy of discriminating against limited government groups.

“Part of being president is there’s so much beneath you, uh, that you can’t know because the government is so vast,” Axelrod added.

Exactly … and that’s exactly the problem.

Naturally we reject Axelrod’s contention that Obama was unaware of these scandals. Clearly his administration knew what was happening at the IRS months ago, and the evidence of a high-level coverup in the Benghazi affair seems indisputable at this point.

But still … Axelrod’s admission is worth acknowledging, not because it lets Obama off of the hook (which it doesn’t) but because it highlights the extent to which government has become the unruly beast our founding fathers feared it would become.
