John McCain’s Football Bill

U.S. Sen. John McCain (RINO-Arizona) is proposing legislation which would subject NFL teams with taxpayer-subsidized stadiums to new television regulations. Specifically, these teams would be banned from “blacking out” games – or not televising games in local markets that have not been sold out.

With the average NFL ticket running nearly $80 last year, fans living through this economy “recovery” are finding it harder to attend games. In fact after peaking in 2007, the NFL has seen its attendance steadily decline in recent years (although it did experience a mild uptick in 2012).

In addition to banning blackouts, McCain’s bill – the so-called “Television Consumer Freedom Act of 2013” – would also seek to limit the practice of bundling, or forcing television subscribers to buy packages of channels instead of the ones they want to watch.

Fans will no doubt love McCain’s legislation – but we oppose it. Government should have no role whatsoever in the professional sports industry – whether it be subsidizing stadiums or regulating television. The NFL is a $9.5 billion a year business. It does not need – nor should it receive – taxpayer handouts.

Being able to order cable TV channels a la carte? Oh shit, here comes another nail in cable’s/satellite’s coffin!

The NFL is entertainment, let it be “free market,” and for fucks sake, tax them like everyone else.

Agree with Smirks about taxing the NFL, and supremely disagree with your conclusion to be against a free-market bill that would end the stranglehold of cable and satellite companies from forcing “choices” down consumer throats. This bill would in fact open up the market and allow for companies to negotiate with networks to provide a la carte menus for what consumers want to watch. Right now, it is the government restricting choice.

It’s a stupid bill that’s trying to break up a massive pile of cash that these freeloading fucks have been rakin in for years.

Thomas Jefferson was spot on when he said:

My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.

Is this not a perfect case?

Unfortunately, Americans have yet to figure out that if they want change to occur they have to implement it from their pocketbooks. Money changes everything – Corporations are very good at keeping people disinterested and forcing sides which reduces the chance for a united front.
