Columbia, SC: Lazy As Hell

The city of Columbia, S.C. has been ranked as one of the laziest large metropolitan areas in the country, according to a new report from Men’s Health magazine.

South Carolina’s state capitol ranked 96th on the publication’s list of the “best and worst places for exercise” in America – ahead of only Nashville, Tennessee, Charleston, West Virginia and Jackson, Mississippi.

(Thank God for Mississippi, right?)

Obviously this dismal ranking – based on data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control – isn’t surprising. A Businessweek report three years ago ranked the Palmetto State as the eighth-laziest in the nation, so it stands to reason our state capitol is full of people who are very, very good at sitting very, very still.

“It’s a great day in (Columbia) South Carolina!”

To get fatter …

i wonder if it has anything to do with the number of parking garages….i mean why walk an extra block when you can just drive and park again

Hard to walk around when you’re regularly accosted by the homeless, whether you’re walking the streets or in the parks.

Why, an abused horse has never attempted to hassle me for change or stood urinating in a side door of a store on Main Street?

I used to work out of an office in the Vista at the corner of Gadsden and Lady street. I routinely was hassled by passersby for money, a ride somewhere, a job, etc. On more than one occasion I saw grown men urinating on the sidewalk on Lady Street in broad daylight on a work day, during business hours. This city has some issues. Too bad our mayor is knee deep in legal matters to effectively run this city on a trajectory other than into the ground.

This is exactly what is wrong with Columbia, and why I am moving back to Greenville. Building parking garages we don’t need and building homeless shelters for the fucking bums who continually accost me when I go into the courthouse. Lazy, useless people who want nothing more than to sponge off of society. I won’t go anywhere near Finlay Park anymore, and don’t see why anyone would. And to think that they want to open that old tunnel for pedestrian use? Hell, bums and criminals will fight over who is going to rob you.

Greater Greenville May 15, 2013 at 10:34 am

You’ll be just in time for the new parking garage Greenville announced last week. Gangs run rampant downtown during the summer, people jumping from the parking garages (3 recently) cops shoot a guy who beat his comrade with a baseball bat early one evening one block from the courthouse (Brown St. Club). I’ll agree, Cola is dangerous and sucks, but I’m afraid we may be heading that way. Last week the cops waited for a gang to pull out of a local high school parking (guess which one) lot before rescuing a student from the trunk of the car who had just been kidnapped so that the press wouldn’t report it as gangs in the schools again which causes a huge parental frenzy. One can only imagine what is covered up in Cola via pressure from the University.

southmauldin May 15, 2013 at 11:00 am

They need to enforce that curfew before somebody gets killed up there. It’s still way safer than my office in Five Points after dark. Hell, I have a gun I don’t know how to shoot that I carry at night if I’m at the office.
Was that guy that jumped from the garage last week a suicide?

GG May 15, 2013 at 11:17 am

yes, they suspect, and young at 32 or 33. Just after Artisphere in broad daylight. Pretty sad. I have a daughter in Cola at USC. She loves Cola but I cringe when I read the stories. What can you do? Greenville is still a good place to live and the City will play hardball to keep it safe since we have some really strong corporate sponsors. The female chief can be tough when she needs to be.

I know about a guy that was nearly beaten to death in Columbia (a la Carter Strange) by a group of young males (who if Obama had a son…) and it went completely untouched by the news here. The number of stories that never see the light of day in Columbia would be enough to make people want to pick up and move immediately.

Sorry, but that is a cold hard truth. When I was fifteen years younger, parents took their kids to Finley (sp?) Park with no worries, now all it is is a roaming grounds for homeless. Same with the main library, Main Street, etc.

Maybe we don’t do enough for the homeless in this city, but the effects of their loitering and panhandling is as undeniable as it is un-PC.

I’d be willing to bet the $100,000 I paid in taxes last year that Big T is on some form of government assistance. I’m guessing disability, probably mental.

Reply
GrandTango May 15, 2013 at 5:32 am

You’d lose the bet and you’d deserve to lose. Don’t be an assuming person, unable to think outside of a small-mind box.

And you may be in a different situation you had walked in my shoes, and your parents had not seen fit to attend to your future.

That said: I was raised in a home w/ several children w./ no father around. My mother certainly is one of the ones that the left’s pro-choice-hawks would have suggested to: that I’d be better off aborted…But she believed life is a gift from God. and no matter how hard it was for us, I’ve always been grateful she chose to let me live.

Also: we never got government aid. My mother worked, and showed me that no matter how little you have, it’s so much more valuable, and liberating, when you EARN it yourself.
And I learned Government liberalism takes a lot more from you than it gives…especially if character is Important to you.

So yes: you are much more wealthy than me, if you paid 100K in taxes.
People like you likely laugh at my humble bliss in life.
But I feel I’m very rich, because I respect life, education, hard work and the morality of good people. I EARNED a college education and have a beautiful family, that I am loyal to. I don’t want my children to grow up as I did. There is a lot of shame for a child, when his father is not there for him. It’s very painful.

So, no: I did not have a future laid out for me, and I do not hate other people because they may have. But I do think a lot of suburban-types, or no-conscious government-dependents, have no idea where I’m coming from. And that is frustrating, especially in world that can hate good people, with no, or so little reason to…other than your political or racial hatred….

You can adhere or not. All I can do is give you the advice. It’s up to you, as to your ability to open your mind, and/or think for yourself.
But keep in mind, there are a lot of people, hoping you’ll stay as you are…you’re a lot easier to control that way….

LD May 15, 2013 at 7:56 am

Can you adhere? Can you open your mind? Can you think for yourself?

LD May 15, 2013 at 3:40 pm

I quoted you because of the hypocracy of your statements. You are unable to think outside of your box. Your thinking is cliched. And based on other comments you have political and race based hatred. So which is it– the compassionate conservative or the extreme right winger?

I’m not surprised you feel that way. I probably gave you more REAL education in a one-minute read than you’ve gotten in your whole life. And if you have any intellect whatsoever, you may be ashamed of yourself after digesting what I’ve shared w/ you.

In my case, I dealt w/ shame and properly assigned it to those responsible.

Whereas: Liberals tell you they can erase your shame. But they cannot. That is impossible. It must be dealt with and properly assigned.

All the liberals really do is transfer un-processed shame into hatred for people they wrongfully blame.
Then they take the hate they have generated, and attack people who are blameless in order to empower themselves.

Big Mondo May 15, 2013 at 10:43 am

I don’t hate you Twat I just enjoy pushing a button to see what shoots out of the hole. You see, you take yourself so seriously that it is really hard for myself to take you seriously. In a way, you are like a little attraction at a carnival. I know I can throw the ball and knock over the can. I also know that I don’t want a fat stuffed bear. But, for a dollar, it is fun to throw the ball as hard as I can to just see what the fuck happens. 20 seconds after I’m done, I’ve forgotten all about the can, the bear and the Twat. I’m focusing on corn dogs and candy apples. No self-hate, no assignment bullshit. I usually will finish my work, end the day with a bong hit or a glass of Pinot and check my yard for weeds as I stroll around in my bare feet. The weekend will come, we’ll party and watch the Preakness and grill some tuna. Life is good. Let the ones who fuck it up for us deal with it. That’s what we pay them to do. Let it go, man, live a little. Your kids will love you for it.

GrandTango May 15, 2013 at 11:48 am

BM, You are very common. You get inspired by a very honest assessment that I give you of yourself, and people like you.

So you attempt to equal what I’ve contributed.
But what you succeed in doing is showing that you are vapid, non-creative and unable to be honest, w/ yourself or anyone else.

Sadly for you., I actually pulled you out of the hole you live in, and had you embarrass yourself.
Those who cannot respect anything, do not attract respect.
Because you are unworthy, you feel small.
The small-minded ignorantly think obscenity is humorous and shows wisdom. It really just represents you as one who desperately wants to express something of value, but you lack the intellect or candor to do that.

Because you are deficient, you blame me,. I see you for what you are…and I define you accurately, That makes you seethe w/ petty anger and jabber mindlessly.

Not a revealation. Most liberals have no problem abandoning their responsibilities.
It’s the root of a lot of the shame I spoke about.
You divert your un-addressed, and justified shame, into anger
And Liberalism allows you to blame others, instead of absolving the reason you are ashamed of yourselves. And you end up, unjustly, hating the people you blame for things you fail to take responsibility for.

I do interval and a much lower # of miles than when I was younger. It’s been a revelation on my joints and still keeps me in shape. 1 day on rubber, 1 day on grass, off days with a 3 set Marine style PFT but I switched the pullups for weights. Probably only amounts to 3 miles a week running(I do it timed)…but I do it high intensity.

I’ve been injury free since I switched to interval.

I do my own version but the philosophy is the same. I had to relearn how to train now in middle age versus when my body could take more abuse and this has helped immensely. Although it didn’t help that I took too much time off for a while and didn’t take care of myself like I had.

Anyway, I’m not competing in anything physically anymore; I train for health and stress relief instead of competition so I’m happy with my routine. Plus, it’s not as time consuming.

i think it’s probably best to consider the infrastructure before blaming people. an anthropological perspective is helpful. how pedestrian friendly is the city? how close are goods and services to work or home without requiring a vehicle? does the city have safe bike pathways, walkways and sidewalks in neighborhoods? there are some socioeconomic factors at play also.
