In case you missed it, South Carolina state government was closed on May 10 for Confederate Memorial Day. That’s right … while the rest of us busted our asses trying to make ends meet in this economic “recovery,” hundreds of thousands of underworked, overpaid bureaucrats got another day off.
Confederate Memorial Day was established in 2000. Along with the observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. day, it was part of the compromise that moved the Confederate flag from the dome of the S.C. State House to a much more prominent location on the front lawn of the building.
We support the observance of both days, but we don’t believe either should be a paid state holiday – and have said so consistently. Also we’ve never cared much for the flag debate (unless bikinis were involved).
“South Carolina’s bloated, incompetent, inefficient and unaccountable bureaucracy doesn’t need more holidays, it needs more pruning,” we wrote last year.
Unfortunately, every year our state’s “Republican-controlled” S.C. General Assembly pumps more money into the same failed bureaucracies – whether K-12 education, higher education, socialized medicine or any number of other non-core government functions (including non-core Confederate-related functions).
And while the budgets keep getting bigger … the results keep getting worse.
But hey … what do we honestly expect when our elected officials dress up like this?
So what’s another couple of days off, right? Again, it’s not like most of these bureaucrats are doing anything meaningful in the first place …

Fat boy is clearly waiting for the roofies to kick in. That’s a creepy stare.
Good God – I think you’re right.

I presume that when Sic Willie had his snout buried in the public trough while employed by his boy Sanfraud, he was an under worked, overpaid bureaucrat.
Oh no, you see, Willie was an exception! All of the OTHER state employees were lazy leeching incompetent slobs whose employment apparently doesn’t matter.

FITS Cliché at its most evident…
It’s kinda funny how FITS-type Liberal-Tarians will defy reason to plead w/ you to see them as unique, or nuanced.
But, in reality, they are so Conventional, and weak-minded, they so easily fall in line w/ the liberal Rhetoric, because it’s what everybody is doing…
This is Classic FITS pandering to the vapid people who he so much wants to see him as “cool.”
Fuck Lincoln!
He was a bid FAG! His friends called him,GAYBE!
Every time T says “Liberal-Tarian” on this site – DRINK!
I’m trashed already.
When’s the Miss Black South Carolina contest this year… before or after Black Bike Week? Should I be asking the SC Congressional Black Caucus or someone who works at USC’s African-American Studies program?
Don’t forget to attend this year’s Black Expo May 18th at the Columbia Convention Center.

compromise
Will, I don’t think “compromise” means what you think it does. One side wanted the flag to continue flying over the State House dome, the other side wanted it to never fly over the State House dome. The result would better be termed “capitulation”.
I say this as someone who believes that except for special occasions (like today, for example), the flag should not have been flown over the State House since 1865.
While sympathetic to those who thumb their nose at the federal government, I disagree with the mindset of those who put it up (racist, divisive ‘good ol’ boys’) in 1965(?).
I also disagree with those who brought it down (the perpetually ‘victimized’, divisive NAACP extortionists) in 2000.
Oh, and Grand Tango…….
I’ve got yer “NUANCE” right here!
Close., Tonto. And good stuff you have written. 1962, under let’s see, a DEMOCRAT governor. It was for confederate centennial or some such crap, and they just left it up.
It is by the way a flag for looosers, and loosers strike their flag after looosing a war.
In 1962, ALL elected officials in the Old South were Democrats. I think it had something to do with Grand Tango’s avatar.
Fergit, Hell!
Yep, and as soon as Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act two years later, those “Democrats” ran to the Republican Party.
Kind of a big caveat you left out.
Here’s Nixon’s political strategist, Kevin Phiilips in 1970:
“From now on, the Republicans are never going to get more than 10 to 20 percent of the Negro vote and they don’t need any more than that…but Republicans would be shortsighted if they weakened enforcement of the Voting Rights Act. The more Negroes who register as Democrats in the South, the sooner the Negrophobe whites will quit the Democrats and become Republicans. That’s where the votes are.”
So what’s your point again?
mph,
Everything that you say is correct. I was just pointing out to Bob that everything political in the Old South, from Reconstruction to the mid 1960’s, was Democratic.
Sorry that you thought I was obfuscating.
I don’t roll like that, mate.
On the subject of LBJ, he was notorious for his racism towards black people. But he did get one thing right: he called MLK “That hypocrite preacher.”

If it’s a flag for “loosers,” does that mean they go around turning people loose? Wouldn’t that mean that the it’s a flag for freedom lovers? But then how do you “loose” a war?

If people are boycotting South Carolina because the Confederate Flag is up, isn’t that a paradigm case of government getting in the way and harming the market? In essence, South Carolina’s business community is subsidizing the display of a relic from the 1800s. This hasn’t changed under these amazing “libertarian” governors we’ve had since 2003.
The flag is not a relic. It is a symbol of freedom. I view this flag similarly to SC original submission to the flag debate. The ideals behind the boycott are what harm the business community. Communism, Affirmative Action, Equal Pay. These are all bullshit commie union libitard talking points.
As for the holidays, Personally I think there are to many fracking holidays. Dump them all except for Christmas and the 4th. For those at the gubmint trough, taxed or tit money, you get no holidays. Cut their pay in half while I’m at it. And no more welfare, too.
As for all this slavery BS that keeps coming up. I didn’t do it. My family didn’t do it. I’m not responsible for it. I refuse to accept responsibility for it. I’m not a racist. I don’t give a shit what happened 200 years ago. Never have never will. You don’t deserve a fracking paycheck because your aunts 3rd cousin twice removed got fucked in the butt by some freak that likes whipping people. Not my problem.

[Cue up Rebel Yell]
Yep, that there’s a symbol of freedom. Freedom to own black folks. And the freedom to keep’em coloreds from vote’n and drinking out of the same water fountains. Yep, it was in 1962, 200 years ago, when they hoisted that banner of freedom over the state house. Shit boy, those were some fine days of freedom. When them uppity blacks used Gandhi’s method of non-violence in places like Rock Hill. We showed ’em freedom – they got solitary confinement and rations of bread and water. Yep, they wanted to be treated like white folks, Frank. What the fuck? Shit, then our all-white legislature curtailed the political activities of any organization that wanted to end segregation and ran those stars and bars up as an act of defiance against the Federal Gov’t. We goddamn love the constitution. Well, cept when it tells us we can’t treat our Negroes however we damn well please, boy. In Mississippi and Alabama, they was even more freedom loving. They beat their uppity blacks with clubs, let dogs loose on them, hosed’em with water cannons and shot them with impunity. Now that’s freedom.
And when Ronald “Freedom” Reagan ran for president in 1980, he made a “State’s Rights” speech at the Neshoba County Fair to talk about those “freedoms.” Coincidentally, it was also the place where three kids working for civil rights were murdered by that freedom loving organization, the KKK.
The South will rise again, you libtards. It’ll be glorious. Gloriously stupid.
That was funny as hell. Very Good. thumbs up for that one.
Seriously, I wasn’t a part of it and I won’t be held responsible for it. Because it means something to you doesn’t mean it means something to me.
By your comments I assume that everyone that cuts you off on the freeway must be an asshole. Couldn’t be that they have someone in the car injured rushing to the hospital, or a baby that’s squirting out right now. Must be there an asshole, right?

“Couldn’t be that they have someone in the car injured rushing to the hospital, or a baby that’s squirting out right now. Must be there an asshole, right?”
Odds say, yes, they’re probably an asshole.
And do you feel the same about the USA flag that flew over slabery for a hundred years before the CSA? How about the USA flag that flew while women, children, and men were slaughtered at Wounded Knee in 1890…25 years after the USA was supposedly concerned about equal rights & freedom for all. Would you like to talk with the Japanese-Americans that were tossed in an interment camp during WWII? But yeah, that Confederate Battle Flag (not the Stars & Bars as you incorrectly called it) is just so evil. God bless the USA though. And I’m far from being a “libtard”. I probably support a smaller government than you do.
Oh Anthony, I love a false conflation as much as the other guy, it beats the shit out of an honest argument. But using the US flag comparison is embarrassing.
The Confederacy was founded for one reason, hombre. Don’t believe me, go read each state’s ordinance of secession. I find it funny that Southerners (I’m from SC) spent the past century pretending it’s not about slavery. Contemporaries never did. And the Confederate Constitution was nearly identical to the American Constitution, with the exception of the issue of slavery. Whoops.
And that flag was hoisted over the state house in 1962. Whatcha think that was about, Bubba? Freedom? Yeah, freedom to keep black people form voting and being treated as human beaings.
You want to stand by what the flag represents, have at it. It’s a free country, no thanks to the shit kicking rednecks that put it up.
And the libtard comment was meant as irony.
So it’s all a lie then. None of the founding fathers really did own slaves.
And, despite what I’ve been told, slavery really began in 1860, with the secessionist movement?
Got it. Slavery existed before 1860. Therefore something.
It’s like talking to children.
Don’t be so hard on yourself!!
No,but the Colonization movement took off as Honest Abe did his best to rid this country of freed Blacks. Lincoln/Colonization Society- check it out.
Yeah, when they’re trashing the reputations of everyone that ever wore the gray, that’s one of those embarrasing topics (Lincoln and Colonization) that modern historians don’t want to talk about.
Yeah do read the secession papers of VA,NC,TN,and AR. It was over Lincoln’s demand that they march South and kill those in the already seceded 7 Cotton states. They refused and then seceded. Abe sent his troops into VA,got their butts handed to ’em,and the war was on. The flag in 1962 was for the anniversary of that war. If you’ve got proof( House records) that it was for something else, show it.
I can understand why it is better to dodge the question about slavery for 89 years under Ol’ Glory. And the attempt to eradicate the Red race. Rather, shall we say, uneasy to speak of.How about those Yankee slave states in the 1860’s? Md,De,Mo,and Ky. Let’s not forget good ol’ West ‘By God’ Virginia, who came into the Union in June of 1863,6 months after the famous Emancipation; yet came into the Union as a SLAVE state. (only slaves over 26 yrs of age were freed) Discussion anyone? Move on. Anyone care to question why Abe’s adoptive state of ILL,as well as IND and other UNION states, passed laws denying Blacks the right to move into their states? They were given time to travel thru BUT DO NOT STAY. Oregon,a UNION state took it a step further and had a NO NEGROES in their state’s Constitution. With your vast concerns about racism, I would say either your outrage is selective or your knowledge of history is limited. I’m guessing both.
Black people are the only race who seem to be constituionally incapable of living with anything that they find even REMOTELY unpleasant. Oh, and before you say, “we’ve been living with unpleasantness for hundredes of years,” I’ll say, yeah, that’s true. Which only serves to make the current penchant for whineyness all the more tragic.
I read recently that even Gen. Lee complained about the lack of support for troops by the southern civilian population. I don’t know whether this complaint about the later war years was made during the war or afterwards (and need to track it down).
I wonder how many “southern pride” stars-and-bars wavers are descended from such shirkers?
The flag went up in 1962 for the anniversity of the WBTS. If you think it was for something else, prove it with facts.

I wrote a satirical piece about the Confederate flag issue a few months ago. It features Glenn McConnell…
http://2big2fall.wordpress.com/2012/11/07/glenn-mcconnell-unveils-new-confederate-memorial-in-columbia/
our very own racist confederate general, living in a time warp… how very queer
Nothing would make better satire than the way in which the black community goes into utter meltdown in the presence of a Confederate flag. Or even hearing the word “confederate.” Great satire would include the belief on the part of the black community that all of their various racial disorders would magically disappear when all relics of the Confederacy are removed. You know, like there would be no more drugs, gangs, unwanted children, black on black murders , derelict fathers, et al. In fact, I think that one of the reasons Native Americans don’t get angry when someone decides to put up a bufallo soldier monument is that they know that they would be laughed to scorn!
Interesting.
Look at http://www.childtrendsdatabank.org/sites/default/files/75_fig1.jpg
It shows this percentage of women having out-of-wedlock kids:
black — 72 %
white — 29 %
avg. –41 %
And to think it would all come to a stop if we just did away with those horrible Confederate flags and monuments!
McConnell’s as queer as a $3 bill. I saw him on TV, at the burial of the Hunley crew. And that must have cost us a million dollars. Where does this guy end? Let the pigeons have at him.

SLICK Willie, you gonna do a piece on the next Martin Luther King holiday and say: “The United States of America including South Carolina celebrates ‘Happy Black Day’?” Do you realize that Martin Luther King is now the only American of note since 1876 and maybe before recognized by name in a national holiday. Whatever happen to the really great ones such as Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln to name just three out on many. We just lump those three and others together and call it President’s Day while MLK is individually recognized. Nobody gives a shit any more what these three guys did along with many others? Only MLK is important? Some remind me of what MLK did to garner all this individual recognition? Am I missing something here?
He is the first communist black to be honored in this country. Clinton and Oshitforbrains will be next. (I won’t go there for what they will call it. I don’t roll like that. :) )
Have a Great Day!! :) There won’t be many left with the Demlicans and Republicrats in charge.

If you follow Gamecock or Tiger football, don’t think recruiters from other out-of-state schools, if they’re smart, didn’t make sure to draw the attention of some high school athletes and their parents to this holiday’s being observed still by state government.

White People Day? That’s beyond disrespectful to the many black, Hispanic, and Native American Confederate soldiers that fought (and some died) to defend their land & homes. Look past your government taught ignorance and you would learn that almost everything you were taught about the War Between The States is wrong.
Yes, we are not taught the whole truth. We are not taught about the huge desertion problem amongst southern troops who were pissed off that, in most southern states, wealthy slave owners were exempted from conscription. This gave credence to the then popular saying amongst the rebels: “Rich man’s war, poor man’s fight.”
We are not taught about the southerners, particularly in northern sections of Louisiana and Mississippi who did not support secession and passively resisted the war by sending their young men into the woods to avoid the conscription teams. When they showed up the folks would say that their young men had gone off to fight for “General Greenleaf” a tongue-in-cheek reference to hiding in the woods.
Harry T. Williams covers this subject quite eloquently in his book “Huey Long.” (Yes, I know that Huey Long lived long after the Civil War. Mr. Williams goes back a long way in building up his story about how Huey Long emerged.
I, myself, am a member of a venerable organization called “Sons of Confederate Deserters” and wrote about the Civil War re-enactor phenomenon in a blog posting:
http://2big2fall.wordpress.com/2010/09/05/sons-of-confederate-deserters/
That’s T. Harry Williams not Harry T. Williams…
Historians also seem to be very reluctant to deal with the Union soldiers who owned slaves and were very anxious that the war not be about emancipation. As for Pro-union southerners, there are a couple of books out right now that deal with that very subject. I think one is called SECEEDEING FROM THE CONFEDERACY. I think the modern historian kind of gets a hard-on (well, not in this case, because the author is a woman) when they come across a topic like that. But Unionist slave owners tend to be a bit of an embarrasment.
You act as if the Union desertion is taught. Which btw far exceded the Confederates.Google it on your fav site. Really interesting reading is the 128th IL,from Lincoln’s adoptive home state, who after hearing Abe’s Proclamation deserted in droves. Over 700! Tell us why the Yankees had to use foreigners off the boats to fill their ranks.. Why were the Yankees having such a hard time getting and keeping soldiers? Why was the Union army made up of 25% (TWENTY-FIVE PERCENT) immigrants? “Rich man’s war, poor man’s fight” is a Yankee saying. Read up on the NY draft riots. Lincoln is upping the draft quota (can’t get anybody to join) but for $300 you can get out of the draft. That’s where that saying originated. Nice try though. The Confederacy had a little over 100,000 deserters. NY state alone had almost 50,000. So if the Reb desertion was in your words, “huge”, how would you describe the Yank desertion rate?
Well, shit, thanks, hoss. I’ve been deluded for all these years by the gub’ment school marms that learned me up on Honest Abe. I mean, fuck, I might have spent months sitting in archives reading the primary documents of the period, but I guess I done had da wool pulled over my eyes again by dem lib’ruls.
Well, I guess we could talk about “black confederates” that were rounded up by order of SC General Assembly Act No. 4614 from all over of the state to “serve” in the Confederacy. And by serve, I mean they were routinely killed doing things like rebuilding Fort Wagner and Sumter during the Union bombardments. They loved it. Here’s Jacob Stroyer, who served at Sumter in the summer of 1864: “the whole atmosphere wore the pall of death. . .The mutilated bodies of the negroes, mingled with the black mud and water in the fort yard.”
Here’s what one the staff officers said about these willing Confederate “soldiers”:
“I have seen a great many wounded and some few killed since being down here. One mortar shell dropped in a crowd of negroes working hitting one outright another died shortly after and wounding ten besides. Poor wretches they see a dreadful time of it, are worked very hard and are very much exposed. I feel very sorry for them, some of their masters sending down here without any change of clothes for thirty days at a time. It seems to me I would rather pay a fine or stand a prosecution than send a negro of mine down here especially one I cared for. They are treated entirely too harshly. To be sure the answer would be if the negroes don’t do the work the soldier will have to and the alternative is die negro or die soldier consequently the negro gets it, but taking that aside they are treated very harshly by the overseers.”
Yeah, they loved the Confederacy.
Great piece of historical documentation, sir (or madam?). Don’t expect it to have any impact, however, as folks like Anthony possess very little in the way of critical reasoning skills.
I’ll tell you what mph. If you want to be responsible, and beholden, to any one or many for something that happened 5+ generations ago, you go right ahead. Happy Birthday
I myself will not.
Have a Great Day!! :) There won’t be many left with the Demlicans and Republicrats in charge.

Do a little research on the treatment of Blacks by Union soldiers. No difference at all. Read about the slaves being “rounded up” so they could “join” the Union. Or the Maine soldiers firing on their fellow soldiers from the 54th MA at Ft.Wagner. And we have the “incident” at Ebenezer Creek that shows how wonderful the Yanks treated Black civilians. There are hundreds upon hundreds of reports like these if you care to research them. But that wouldn’t fit your agenda, would it?
It’s interesting to note how when West African nations apologize for the role that they played in the international slave trade (that’s right, the one that brought slaves to American shores), it seems to be sufficient for black Americans. They would never dream of trying to keep someone from one of those countries from celebrating their tribal heritage.
It’s called REMUNIRATION. If there’s no money in it, just like the rest of the political whores, the NAACPPPPPPPPP doesnt’ want to be bothered by it.
Besides, can you imagine what those warlords over there would have to say if any blacks came to there country with their hand out. BBBWWwahahahahaahahahahah

I agree with you, but I think that that’s only part of the problem. It’s an anti-white thing. The title of this article says it all. White people aren’t suppose to be proud of their heritage. I mean, let’s face it, there’s no remuneration in removing the monument at Stone Mountain, taking down any and all Confederate flags, renaming Forrest Park in Memphis–at least not in the short term. What you have is a race of people who have had their own way on EVERYTHING for the past 50 or so years, and that’s mad them spiteful and vindictive–at least towards white people.
Oh, and my point was, they would think it was just hunky-dory if someone from one of these west African nations was to celebrate his tribal heritage ON AMERICAN SOIL, regardless of THEIR history of oppression and slave trading. Just like they’re OK with all of the adulation aimed at the buffalo soldiers, despite the fact that their job title included killing and otherwise oppressing Indians.
I can buy that. I don’t really get into the whole white power stuff simply because I’m personally a mutt. A little of this a little of that and a whole lot of Polock.
But I get lumped into the bunch, just as many blacks or any other race get lumped into whatever hate group (NAACP, KKK, Democrats, Republicans, La Raza, pick your poison) is standing next to the talking heads at the moment.
I will also agree that the white male in this country is an endangered species. If your black you are a ‘proud african american (insert gender here)’, but if your white (and male) then by definition you’re a racist bigoted pig (unless your gay of course :). Then you get the whole rainbow bs you gotta deal with there).
Have a Great Day!! :) There won’t be many left with the Demlicans and Republicrats in charge.

Well, and I’m not a “white power” kind of guy either. I actually (unlike them) take no joy in belittling someone else’s culture. Just leave mine alone. If a Confederate statue truly effects someone’s quality of life, then I would say that person is pretty pathetic.

Fox: New Evidence Hillary Killed Lincoln
WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report) — In what may be the most serious allegation ever made against the former Secretary of State, Fox News Channel reported today that Hillary Clinton was involved in the conspiracy to murder President Abraham Lincoln.
The latest charge against Mrs. Clinton was reported by Fox host Sean Hannity, who said that the evidence of her role in the Lincoln assassination came mainly in the form of e-mails.
According to Mr. Hannity, “If it’s true that Hillary Clinton killed Lincoln, this could have a major impact on her chances in 2016.”
The accusation against Mrs. Clinton drew a strong response from Sen. Lindsey Graham (R.-S. Carolina): “There’s been a concerted effort by Hillary Clinton to cover up her role in President Lincoln’s murder. She has said nothing about it. This is bigger than Watergate, the Cuban missile crisis, and the Second World War put together.”
Responding to the allegation, Mrs. Clinton issued a terse statement indicating that she could not have participated in Lincoln’s assassination because she was born in 1947.
“That’s what she wants us to believe,” Sen. Graham said.
Oh No! Grand Tango is…..DEAD?

How will I know what I’m thinking when I wake up each morning?
Is it OK if I honor my 2xGrandfather who was a Confederate soldier? He was 100% Cherokee. Do I get a pass from the Liberal PC police? Thank you.

Well, I read the article and the discussion threads, and all I can say is, “Really?”. The state is a laughing stock, the confederacy lost the war, and if these people don’t join the 21st century pretty soon, they’ll be the new peasant class.

The color of one’s skin is just that. Who are African-Americans and did all come directly from Africa? When are African-Americans ever going to refrain from using Slavery as a convenient scapegoat? They have about beat that to death so time to move on. I never owned a slave, did you?????
