For those of you who missed it, two weeks ago a big story broke in Charleston involving S.C. House Speaker Bobby Harrell and his wife, Cathy. The couple were linked to a divorce case involving a woman named Nancy Latham – who was appointed by Harrell to the S.C. Lottery Commission (where she still serves).
Latham – who was allegedly the target of a murder-for-hire plot – is apparently very (and we mean very) close with the Speaker’s wife.
In their voluminous text message exchanges (obtained from a source at the Charleston County Court House), the pair refer to each other dozens of times as “Thelma and Louise” – a nod to the 1991 movie starring Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis. They also make repeated references to their love for one another. In fact there are literally dozens of “love you,” “miss you,” “kisses” and “smooches” contained in their interplay.
Obviously that’s not weird (lots of women talk to each other like that) although occasionally the timing and context of the texts between Harrell and Latham seems a bit odd even for these self described “BFF’s” and “besties.”
“These days you are doing much more for me,” Latham says to Harrell in one text. “Funny how I feel invincible around you.”
In another text – sent just before midnight one evening – Harrell says to Latham “I know you are probably in bed asleep but just needed to say… wish I was home near my BFF.”
In another exchange Harrell tells Latham “I love you so MUCH! If I wasn’t married I would ask you to marry me.”
“We could live off of rainbows and happy thoughts,” Latham responds.
“I thought we already did,” Harrell answers. “Oh that’s right I live off of vodka … same thing.”
In another pre-midnight exchange, they invoke their nicknames prior to signing off for the nihgt.
“I love you louise,” Latham writes.
“I love you (too) thelma,” Harrell responds.
Awwww, right?

The exchanges are also peppered with references to “Bobby” (a.k.a. the Speaker) and the various ways in which he is willing to throw his weight around on behalf of his wife’s friend.
“Bobby’s got your back,” Harrell says to Latham in one text – and he repeatedly does, using his official position to aid Latham in her legal matters as well as various family issues (including using his muscle to get her daughter into college and her power turned back on).
