Democrat Elizabeth Colbert-Busch has opened up a nine-point lead over former S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford in their battle for the Palmetto State’s first congressional district, a new Public Policy Polling (PPP) survey reveals.
Colbert-Busch is currently receiving the support of 50 percent of registered voters in the district, while 41 percent back Sanford. Green Party nominee Eugene Platt is drawing 3 percent, the poll found.
PPP is a North Carolina-based, Democratic-leaning firm, but its surveys have been incredibly accurate in South Carolina in recent years.
Colbert-Busch entered this Lowcountry congressional race with a slim lead over Sanford, but a recent poll from the former governor’s campaign showed him taking a lead just outside the margin of error.
Of course that’s when all hell broke loose for Sanford – whose spectacular 2009 fall from grace was an international news story as well as the death knell for his 2012 presidential aspirations.
According to the governor’s ex-wife, Sanford has been habitually trespassing on her property in violation of their 2010 divorce decree – although the real reason for her anger is reportedly Sanford’s inclusion of his former mistress (now fiancée) Maria Belen Chapur on stage at his GOP victory celebration three weeks ago.
Two of Sanford’s children were also onstage – the first time they’d ever been in Chapur’s presence – and both appeared visibly upset at their father’s former mistress being invited to participate in the celebration. Of course in fairness to Sanford, he says he wasn’t told Chapur would be at the event.
Whatever happened, the polling data doesn’t look good for the former governor – with 51 percent of respondents saying the trespassing allegations “give them doubts about his fitness for public office.” More than a third described those doubts as “serious.”
The first district is resoundingly Republican, but Sanford’s latest stumble could cause it to swing to the Democrats unless he finds a way to stabilize … soon.

what bloc of the women voters, what age group, what religion, what profession, what whatever of the women voters will likely be in mark’s corner? i can’t imagine any. and without the women, what chance does he really have? i’m afraid he is toast!
Yep, he screwed a woman and now thousands are gonna screw him!!!
Not if they just sit out the election. If they are truly pissed at Sanford, they have to get off their butts and vote for ECB.

In all fairness to Sanford, he could have told Chapur to get her ass back in the car and wait for him. How many more times are you going to be “fair” to Sanfraud?
Sic Willie will be “fair” to Sanfraud forever plus one day.
lmao. do you think he would tell her to get back to the car especially after she traveled 5000 miles from one country in another continent to our country and then to the Low Country, had her hair and make-up done professionally, bought very classy looking outfit from Saks 5th Ave (not Walmart) which incidentily covered all her glorious assets that Mark so love and especially after giving him a big hug? No way was he going to tell to get back to the car.
edit to tell her
Did I think he would? No. Do I think he should have? Yes.

“Of course in fairness to Sanford, he wasn’t told Chapur would be at the event.”…….I’m calling bullshit on that.
Yeah, he probably begged her and guilted her out due to the break up rumors and the need to preserve the narrative for his candidacy that this was “more than just an affair.”
You are correct sir.
Oh my God, what a weasel. NOTHING is ever his fault.

Good gracious, now Sanford is comparing himself to William Travis at the Alamo. I guess he has moved on from King David and Thomas Jefferson. He strikes me more as Pinocchio.
I thought the same thing…….Sanford has more personalities than Sybil.
How did it turn out for Travis at the Alamo?

Question 11 is interesting, 72% want to do gun background checks at gun shows
Which is a ridiculous one because they already do them.
Only if you are a dealer. Private sales are exempt.
yes, but the question was not framed that way. they set it up as if no gun sales go through background checks.
Private sellers can’t do background checks.
“If you have federal firearms license, the law states you must do a background check,” Ross said. “At a gun show though, you’ll see people with guns on their back with signs on them. Someone will looking to a buy a gun will approach them and ask them to buy them.”
This is known as a private sale.
The problem is that people wanting to sell their guns privately, who wish to do a background check legally can’t just do one, without paying a Federal Firearms dealer from $50 to $150, Ross said.
http://greendale.patch.com/articles/background-checks-at-gun-shows-and-online-gun-shows-what-do-you-think
Tacking on $50-$150 makes it extremely hard to make a private sale of a firearm. There needs to be a solution to letting private sellers do background checks, and cheaply.

I would hope ECB wins if for nothing else than to end Sanford’s career, but considering SC’s usual voting record I’m not going to trust any poll saying Sanford is behind.
Amen.

Ditto. These polls are notoriously bad, so I only believe the election day polls.
I agree. However in my opinion it should alarm voters in SC1 that one of the moderaters of this ‘Patch’ sponsored debate on April 29 is apparently a ‘twitter’ buddy with the Director of Communications for the ECB Campaign.

Sanford will win by 15% – Be real here people-You are in South Carolina
It is not South Carolina, it is the coast from the Charleston County to Jasper County, a moderate area that makes other moderate areas look red-meat conservative.
Right.
South Carolina.
Where the major food companies send their about-to-expire products for sale.
Home of “Cheating Baker” Clemson, Civil War re-enactments, the Amazon fulfillment center, minimum-wage tourism, and Bobby “Cockroach” Harrell.

Only chance the Republicans have is helping Colbert Busch win this one, to get rid of Sanford ,and then get a better candidate for 2014. Great Jonathan Capehart article in the Washington Post about Sanford.
A win by Colbert-Busch is a vote for the Obama/Reid/Pelosi agenda. And I’d love to see Sanfraud’s career ended, finally to at least spare South Carolina from this plague. Either way this is a loser in my view. Anyway, PPP had Sheheen up over Trikki Nikki so so much for their accuracy FITS – they don’t do a good job of polling Republican voters. They do poll Dems well.
You’re a strange bird, CNSYD. You condemn Sanford but you’ll probably vote for him.
???????????????? and what do I have to do with this post by Mulligan? Talk about strange. I didn’t even vote for Sanfraud for Gov. as I knew he was wacko from his stint in Congress.
I think I can clear this up.

It’s a weird bug.
A win for Busch means a loss for Sanford…….it’s only for a year and then the GOP can regroup…..The objective is to remove this SC Akin from the ticket…..Congress is already controlled by Republicans,a year won’t change anything.
Some people don’t believe that an occasional loss can be good for the party. That’s why most SC voters vote straight ticket. :If my party keeps winning they’ll do what they promise, right?” lol… Sure thing, boss!
They did not have Sheheen up over Haley before the 2010 election. So much for YOUR accuracy. PPP has had Sheheen up in a rematch with Haley at her low point of popularity since taking office. BTW, so did the Winthrop poll, if I recall correctly.
even the taker of the republitarian loot agrees that PPP is notoriously accurate, it’s just not fair…… effing dems. and their science, accuracy, and facts.
A vote for Sanfraud is a vote for Boehner, especially since he endorsed Sanfraud.
ECB won’t tilt the balance in favor of Democrats at all, just like Sanford won’t tilt the balance in favor of the GOP. Republicans have a pretty strong majority still in the House. All voting for Sanford will do is give a terrible politician a seat of power once again.
Plus Sanford just took $2500 from Graham’s buddy, McCain??? Ugh

I think it as insensitive for Chapur to show up if she knew his children were going to be there and she had never been around them. Of course who would expect her to be sensitive when she began an affair with a married man with four young sons. How does someone find happiness when that very happiness causes sadness for their family members. I hope they both go back to Argentina.
Bet they will if he loses.
I’ll bet not, because she will drop him like a hot potato.
His sons must be conflicted… they have to put up with his mistress/fiancee and his candidacy in order to keep him in the US.
The boys can sit back and relax….Sanford is not going anyplace….He’s like the palmetto bugs, here to stay.
Her history is Argentina is gold digging and home wrecking. After San FRAUD loses this election she will move on to another potential sugar daddy.
I understand the Democrats have Don Meredith lined up to sing the first song at the victory party.
Sanford doesn’t want to move to Argentina,he wants to stay in Charleston area with Jenny and the boys. He doesn’t even want to marry Buttercup,he’s just up against a brick wall.Knowing he couldn’t run for office with her still dangling out there as his mistress the old engagement ring came out along with all the” Glamour Shots” pictures. If he loses he’s up shit creek without a paddle. Why would a man so in love with the other woman keep trespassing at the ex wife’s house. With a dog you call that separation anxiety……OK,that works.
Guess that was why he repeatedly asked Jenny to reconcile even when the divorce was all but final. He wants his kids back, his easy life back with Jenny as back stop but he couldn’t convince her that he was truly repentant of his philandering ways. He should have read her book early on to see what was really bugging her. But as other posters have commented, he is truly tone-deaf.
A move to DC was one of the few ways he could keep his Argentine duenna/soul mate separate from his SC-1 duties and family. Has anyone gotten an invitation to their summer wedding yet?
He wants her family money back.

Slightly off topic but still relevent I think (and probably a silly question)… I got my absentee ballot last week and ECB was listed as the Democratic candidate and the Working Families candidate. Almost looks like she running against herself. Any ideas as to why she would be on the ballot twice?
ECB’s office just gave me this explanation:
>> Working Families is a political party, just like Democrat or Republican.
>> Working Families has its own members.
>> Working Families endorsed ECB.
>> So citizens can vote for ECB as candidate of either Working Families or Democrat party.
ALL VOTES FOR ECB, FROM EITHER PARTY, WILL GO TO ECB.
Hope this clears things up.
That does help. Thanks very much.
Will there be a “straight ticket” option in this election?

Mark Sanford,
You have scandalized your wife, your children, your Party, and an entire generation of Americans. You should drop out of the race with a written notice stating it is the best for SC1 and the Grand Old Party. The Special Election Runner-up, Curtis Bostic should immediately be the nominee for SC1.

Shame on all the GOP establishment (Harrell, Neilson, Byars etc) that was willling to go AGAINST what I know they believe and stoop below their own values to support this guy!!!

It’s kind of nice to have Mark Sanford back.
Perhaps not if you’re from South Carolina. It is my strong impression that many South Carolinians are tired of their former governor, who so famously snuck off to Argentina for some extramarital recreation while his aides claimed he was camping on a national hiking path. A resident of Columbia, the state capital, told me that he had been in Peru, on a train to the legendary ruins of Machu Picchu, when a local resident asked him where he hailed from.
At the mention of the words “South Carolina,” the Peruvian nodded happily. “Appalachian Trail!” he cried.
. . .
At his victory party, Sanford said the campaign had been “an amazing journey.” Since the great disaster of 2009, Sanford has taken to mentioning “this journey called life” rather frequently. Perhaps, in a perfect world, a guy who got in trouble for jetting off to assignations on the taxpayers’ dime would not focus quite so much on travel metaphors.
. . .
I’d rather keep track of Mark Sanford’s evolution. So far, his spin strategy has been all about empathy and forgiveness. (“It’s only really in our brokenness that we really begin to understand each other.”) By the end of the primary, you had the impression that the key to a new bipartisan spirit in Washington would be having all the members of Congress tell each other about their affairs.
. . .
Since we last had Sanford to kick around, he’s been divorced and gotten engaged to the Argentinian squeeze. He virtually never mentions her and she barely got a shout-out on primary victory night. (“She completely surprised me,” claimed Sanford, who told Jake Tapper [CNN] that he just turned the corner on his way into the ballroom and there she was.)
. . .
Sanford has always had a terrible case of chronic self-absorption. Now that he’s talking about his feelings so much, it’s turned into a creepy New Age egomania. It began with his post-Appalachian-Trail press conference, when he rambled on and on about his love life as if the assembled reporters were best pals who’d invited him out for a drink. (“It was interesting how this thing has gone down. …”) More recently, according to New York magazine, he went to visit Jenny, who used to run his campaigns, and asked his still deeply estranged ex-spouse if she’d do another. “I could pay you this time,” he added empathetically.
Her refusal was probably a surprise. Like the victory night fiancée.

She will win now but hopefully be defeated in 2014 by Larry Grooms, so this may be a blessing in disguise. We will finally be rid of the man. He will be discouraged, even given his considerable narcissisim, from running for Senate in 2014 and Graham will have a viable opponent in the 2014 primary in the person of an upstate Rep. Heads up warning tho – if ECB gets past 2014, she will also win in 2016 when Hillary runs and women flood the polls, (recall the Monty Python background chicken noises when women congregated here).

Sanford bought a full page ad to explain his trespassing on Super Bowl Sunday—–Will he be taking out full page ads to explain all of the other trespassing charges? Will he blame his son for those also? Gotta say,I loved his line about being a good father—-came close to choking up,but then I remembered Argentina and Father’s Day.

My understanding is that Jenny could not manage Marks campaign because she was going to be running her own anti-campaign. If what I hear is true, and I have every reason to believe that it is, she has one more shell in the turret that will seal his fate and it is not going to be traceable back to her. Sanford supposedly knows about it and is not telling his campaign staff with hopes that she goes soft “for the boys sake”. Not likely to happen and everyone knows this but him.
Carve it in a tree!
Jenny won’t do anything to alienate her sons and she is a Christian. It sounds like you are setting her up. She said Sanford has to sink or swim on his own and I believe her.
Can’t picture Jenny as being vindictive. She loves her sons too much to do any damage to their father. By the way, Mark defended Jenny and said he knows she was not the one who leaked the info about that night he was at her house. Apparently he knows her well and trusts her. There could be another person or group who is so into destroying Mark’s chance of getting back into the House. It could be anyone either a political foe, a religious fanatic or even someone who had a relationship that ended unhappily and is taking out his/hers frustration on Sanford.
Sanford has done everything he could in the past few days to make Jenny out as a liar about the trespassing…..” I was trying to be a good father- Jenny was out of town – my son didn’t want to stay at the party – couldn’t get up with Jenny “……according to Sanford the fault is with Jenny and his son. Did you notice anyplace on that full page ad where he apologized for having trespassed in the past? He said he took his son to the beach house, like it’s his house. He failed to mention that it’s Jenny’s home that she shares with her boys.He never shared this new home with her,but he wants people to think that it’s the family home.If I were Jenny and I had anything that would take him down I would shout it from the rooftops…..Sanford’s downfall was Chapur walking out on that stage.
Bogart, Understood, but what I’m saying is that Jenny is not the kind of person to crucify a father whom their sons love. Mark did say on the radio that Jenny was not the one who leaked the info, it seems to me that he was defending her. In order for Sanford to win Chapur should never have shown up and he was not ready to introduce her yet. Someone in his family or one of his political advisors must have goofed up. Whatever the plans were, it certainly backfired. Can’t wait for the election to be over with so the boys can lead a more normal life and not to have to bear their parents’ bickerings.
Mark is destroying Mark’s chance of getting back into the House, and into Jenny’s house.
Jenny doesn’t need to do anything…..Sanford has already flushed himself down the toilet.

PPP is a North Carolina-based, Democratic-leaning firm, and its surveys have been incredibly accurate in South Carolina in recent years.
There, fixed that for you.

Neither candidate has actually acted like they even want this task at all..?? You would think that from all this WIND ENERGY we have been having that Mark Sanford would have a field day asking Mrs Colbert-Busch what is taking so long with our LOCAL wind turbines..?? But as any political strategist would say……”stay silent and hope for a low turn out..!!”

hope Luv Guv gets his ass handed to him by a liberal woman democrat. but the blame doesnt stop there, SCGOP chairman Chad Connelly and former Charleston GOP Chair Lin Bennett (aka Nikki’s bff) and current SCGOP vice chair each deserve blame for not working to keep an adulter off the ballot. SCGOP has its convention coming up and its time they elect a new chairman and vice chairman that know the meaning of good southern christian conservative values.
