Two months ago gas prices in South Carolina were spiking … rising nearly 25 cents per gallon in less than a week.
Since then, though, the needle has been moving in the opposite direction – a small measure of relief for Palmetto State drivers who spend a disproportionately high percentage of their income on fuel costs.
According to the AAA Fuel Gauge Report, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in South Carolina is currently $3.29 – an 18-cent drop from when we checked the figure last month. That’s the lowest figure in the nation – and well below the national average of $3.51.
Of course before anyone starts celebrating, it’s important to remember South Carolinians have some of the lowest income levels in the country – meaning we pay more for gas than the residents of every other state (save Mississippi).
In spite of this, “Republicans” in the S.C. General Assembly want to impose a massive 30 percent increase in the state’s gas tax – and then lock in annual tax hikes moving forward.
Naturally we oppose this effort … and support efforts to cut the tax instead.

Goddamnit, Will! Where do you buy gas?

So we should just let our 4th largest state-maintained roadway network continue to disintegrate, eh? How on earth are we supposed to maintain a network of that size on a fuel tax that only buys 50 cents of what a dollar was worth in 1987?
And now you know why most of us own trucks, we don’t need no stinking roads….
Trucks tend to have less gas mileage though, ergo they pay more gas tax. :P
I didn’t say we were smart, just that we didn’t need no stinking roads…
Yeah man!! :)
We shouldn’t let it disintegrate, but SCDOT shouldn’t be pursuing worthless projects instead of doing its job maintaining what we already have.
If it cancels nonsense projects and demonstrates it is doing what it can with the funds it is getting, then a tax increase isn’t such a bad proposition.
I don’t disagree. However, SCDOT is not asking for new construction. It’s the SCDOT Commission and idiot politicians (particularly in Charleston and MB for the idiotic I-526 and I-73 proposals) who are at fault. While there is still a good degree of waste and inefficiency at SCDOT, even with a more streamlined agency, it could not do enough.

$3.17 at station here in West Columbia……..of course, T will dispute gas prices could possibly go down.
