South Carolina is in the running for an Infinit plant, according to a report from The Greenville News.
“Nissan Motor Co. said it is considering a new manufacturing location in North America, and economists said South Carolina should be in the running for the new plant that reportedly will produce at least 100,000 of its premium Infiniti vehicles a year,” the report states.
Hmmmm …
No word yet on how much taxpayer-funded incentive money South Carolina’s leaders plan to offer Nissan as part of their effort to lure this plant, but such government-subsidized “economic development” is clearly the modus operandi of the state – even though it raises the tax burden on existing businesses.
How has this strategy paid off for the state? Not well.
In fact earlier this week we reported exclusively on the state’s labor participation rate – which is currently at an all-time low.

No, wait, economic development isn’t worth investing tax dollars in. Let’s go back to our squalor and wait for small businesses being killed by Walmarts and Chinese factories replace our dead textile industry.

I am encouraged by the fact that my State, our State, could become a leader in the manufacture of automobiles and airplanes. However I do wonder why our State is chosen over other States who surely desire to have the same businesses locate in their States.
Bottom line . Are we (our cockroach politicians) selling ourselves short and in the long term will we be able to recover the upfront costs
If these enterprises are not able to sustain long term growth and profitability, then South Carolina could very well end up being the Detroit of the South.

If the upstate is in the running, the state will need to get the blessing of BMW to get it. BMW stopped the Volkswagon plant in the upstate when BMW said they did not want it that close to them. We will see.

Some of us are still waiting for an unbiased forensic economist to add up all the costs (tax breaks, incentives, training, etc) and all the benefits (jobs, tax revenue from workers, construction and sales of goods to same, etc) for any of the past projects — BMW, Michelin, Boeing, Continental — whatever, and give us a bottom line.

You make it sound like SC just writes these companies a big fat check. Most of the inventive money goes for infrastructure improvements- road, water and sewer etc- and training the workforce. These incentives have a direct return to our state unlike welfare and our public education system. We need real jobs that make real things. I think Haley is doing a good job on getting jobs.
