Mark Sanford’s political comeback took a big step forward Tuesday night with his convincing win over Curtis Bostic in the GOP runoff for South Carolina’s first congressional district. But it was Sanford’s “soul mate” – making her first public appearance – who stole the show.
Joining the former governor under the white hot lights on his victory stage was Maria Belen Chapur – the beautiful Latin lover turned fiancée who was at the heart of Sanford’s infamous 2009 sex scandal.
Throughout the course of the 2013 campaign Sanford has kept a very tight lid on Chapur – whom he refers to as “Belen.” In fact he was so squirrelly whenever questions turned to Chapur that many reporters and politicos began to question the status of their relationship.
Chapur’s appearance on Sanford’s victory stage would seem to put the kibosh on those rumors, though. Not only that, it gave the “Luv Gov” some insta-cred with the fellas.
“Maria is so hot,” one texted us. “Sanford scored big time.”
Obviously Sanford has to walk a fine line with Chapur moving forward. On the one hand, the legitimacy of their relationship is a key component of his narrative. On the other hand, there’s always the risk of backlash as it relates to his ex-wife Jenny Sanford – who remains very popular with first district voters.
We’ll see how well Sanford navigates that delicate tight rope …

Um…let’s also not forget he probably misappropriated public funds to carry on his affair, so it’s a surprise he would now decide to rub everyone’s nose in it. His opponent now has a chance to crucify him on this point, such that it seems possible to me his candidacy won’t survive until the special.
No, no you don’t understand, Sanford “apologized” for all that! What kind of a [Christian] person are you for bringing that up again, casting stones? You should be happy for him for living an authenticate life. C-Street is sure happy to have one of their good soldiers/operatives back.

I really was taken aback by Gringrich’s win here….as a result I defer to Mencken now:

Perhaps they have entirely reformed and retired from past deceits but coming from this pair it strikes as just pretty verbiage.

This man is in momentary bliss. I doubt if it lasts. It is likely she will find her way to bigger and better men in the US. Stand by Tiger. What a fool to give up his four children and the wife who bore him those beautiful boys for a tramp. He will wake up some day and wonder what the heck he did wrong. The answer is everything.
I wish South Carolina had sent him packing with his South American whore but at least he is headed to Washington where he will fit in nicely. I hope Jenny continues to hold her head up an those children see their father for what he really is and support their mother who has a lot of class and character to continue to live her life without drama like this man.
