Mark Sanford For Congress

To say this website has gone round the bend a few times with former S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford is an understatement. It’s a lengthy, rocky history – one which has factored prominently in the Palmetto State’s recent political past.

In the summer of 2001, Sanford plucked our founding editor from the obscurity of a bass guitar gig with a local alternative rock band – tasking him with messaging responsibility for a statewide gubernatorial campaign.

Astoundingly, that campaign won the November 2002 election over an incumbent Democrat – and for two-and-a-half years Will Folks (a.k.a. Sic Willie) was Sanford’s gubernatorial press secretary.

Things went downhill from there though – rapidly. After Folks announced his departure from the governor’s office in 2005 Sanford flat out stabbed him in the back – accusing him of making a “stupid and tragic mistake” in a trumped-up domestic violence case. The rug having been pulled out from under him, Folks was forced to plead guilty in this “he said, she said” case.

It was during this dark period that FITSNews first appeared on the Palmetto political scene – and quickly established itself as one of Sanford’s most outspoken and aggressive critics. In fact this website was the first media outlet to call on Sanford to resign his office in the wake of his 2009 sex scandal.

“I can understand how he feels that need for redemption very strongly on a personal level, but that is precisely the basis for my advice to him – that he should, in fact, resign,” our founding editor wrote the day after Sanford’s dramatic confession. “Sorry, Mark, but spending the next eighteen months winning people’s trust back is just not a good enough reason for you to stick around.”

That’s true …

Nor is winning people’s trust back a good enough reason to run for the U.S. Congress – which is exactly what Sic told Sanford when he called last December and asked about whether he should jump into the first congressional district race.

That conversation – and several subsequent ones – reminded us of the former governor’s chronic narcissism. Seriously, it’s as though every chat with him involves a lengthy recanting of the “seasons of (his) life” and the “spiritual journeys” he’s on before he eventually gets to the point – which invariably involves something he wants. And for those gullible enough to grant Sanford his wishes, those favors are rarely if ever reciprocated – an imbalance one former staffer related to us once in terms so egregious we literally boiled over with anger against the disgraced politician.

For these and many other reasons – most notably his use of tax dollars to facilitate his extramarital affair – we had resolved not to endorse Sanford in the event he made the GOP runoff for the first congressional district. In fact we were hoping S.C. Sen. Larry Grooms (R-Berkeley) would advance to the runoff – which would have made our decision a no-brainer.

We endorsed Grooms in the crowded primary race – and he came within a few hundred votes of making it to a head-to-head match-up against Sanford.

Curtis Bostic
Curtis Bostic

Grooms had all sorts of redeeming qualities – including a proven record of advocacy on behalf of taxpayers and major free market reforms. Instead, the “anti-Sanford” would up being Curtis Bostic – a trial lawyer and former Charleston County councilman whose only redeeming quality is the fact that he’s not Mark Sanford.

In fact he’s worse … much worse.

Bostic – who doesn’t even live in the first district – is a disaster waiting to happen. He’s a fiscal liberal and social conservative panderer who brings all sorts of troubling baggage into this race. He also has a similar “trust problem” – not to mention his refusal to come clean with voters on who’s paying his bills.

More to the point, Bostic’s “conservatism” appears to be limited to his oft-repeated campaign mantra – “bringing conservatives together around conservative ideas.” Never mind that the only specific “conservative idea” he’s attached to this mantra wound up being a tax hike for reckless “green space” purchases (which Bostic falsely portrayed as a “private sector” effort).

Typical “Republican in Name Only” stuff, people.

Bostic’s campaign website is StopSpending.com. The only problem? He’s never done it.

Bostic is the definition of everything that’s wrong with politics in South Carolina – and everything that’s wrong with the Republican Party. He’s a lying liberal lawyer cloaked as a cross-toting “conservative” – a dangerous specimen indeed. But because his name isn’t Mark Sanford – that may wind up being enough to secure him the GOP nod.

Look, we have no doubt Sanford is going to continue his narcissistic behavior. And we have no doubt he’s only running for this seat because he wants to revive his national ambitions – and start drawing a steady paycheck again.

It’s a “chicken or egg” case of self-indulgence, isn’t it?

But despite this, we also know Sanford will vote right down the line with fiscal conservative champions in the South Carolina delegation like U.S. Reps. Jeff Duncan and Mick Mulvaney. That’s what matters – and that’s why we’re willing to take the heat for endorsing him.

Take this nod with a grain of salt, though. In 2010, this website endorsed the candidacy of S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley – even though we knew intimately (and we mean intimately) what a liar she was. Upon further review that endorsement was a terrible mistake – we probably should have just stayed out of that race.

And we were going to stay out of this race … or simply “un-endorse” Bostic. But that would have been silly.

Mark Sanford is a flawed politician and an even more flawed human being. But held up to the light of taxpayer-centric scrutiny, those flaws pale in comparison to Bostic’s. For this fundamental reason, we endorse Mark Sanford for the first congressional district – and urge its residents to choose this narcissistic philanderer over the wolf in sheep’s clothing knocking at their door.

We usually don’t agree, but I had respect for you. That’s gone now. Sanford is a disgrace — to himself, his family and the state. He lied to the public. He abandoned his duties as governor to chase a woman. Like many politicians, it is all about him and little about public service. This is yet another case of ignoring a good competent candidate, in favor of a “narcissistic philanderer,” just because that candidate has a D behind her name. Things don’t get better in SC precisely because the voters keep re-electing the same malefactors. This is an extreme case of that syndrome. People, shake things up a bit! Reject the vain and self-absorbed Sanford! Move forward!

Folks made “stupid and tragic mistake”
Sanford on the other hand ” experienced recently how none of us is perfect”
Sanford has one standard (basicly no standard) for himself, but is plenty judgemental when it comes to other folks problems.

When Sanford makes mistakes he is the better for it, when others f@%%% not so much.

They have to pay the piper. Sanford demanded Clinton resign because he broke his vows of marriage. When Sanford broke his vows, left his job, took taxpayer money for phoney trips he decided he should not be held to his own standard and stayed in office.

Can’t understand how anyone could support this person who constanly preached commitment, responsiblity, and honor so vigorously until he was exposed as a liar and a fraud.

You may not like Bostic, but he is ten times the man Sanford will ever be.

I was shocked that 30 local clergy have supported Bostic. What next, worship FoxNews? Churches should stay out of politics. If Bostic and the local clergy are so desporate to keep this seat republican why aren’t they upset at DeMint and Scott for not serving out their term? I also vote for the person who has the best character, which in this case is clearly Colbert Busch.

Sanford’s personality as evidenced heavily by his past demonstrates he is out for number one. The best anyone can hope is that he follows the will of others to get what he wants. I’d watch him for any taxpayer funded trips to foreign lands in case he has a falling out with his current mistress.

Bostic would at least have the chance to meet the fate Inglis did if he steps out of line. ECB would hopefully reset the playing field for the next election at least.

As for you not endorsing Haley, I guess we’ll see. If you endorse a candidate you once told to step down, and who you thought shouldn’t have run in this race, who knows what will happen next year? There is no reason to rule it out at least.

Jewish friend was going to vote for Sanford in the runoff and general election.

If Bostic sucks so bad, then concede the goddamn seat to ECB and try again in two years. Sanford does not belong in politics, period.

Why do you insist on backing complete garbage? Better to endorse no one at all. I wouldn’t seriously back any of the three myself.

FITS will likely endorse Haley again in 2014, might as well call it now.

This website will not endorse Haley again. Write it down. All you lefties insisted “FITS will eventually endorse Romney” but that turned out to be a big HELL NO. Hopefully a credible alternative will emerge to Haley/ Sheheen or Haley/ Benjamin … but even if one fails to materialize, we will not endorse Haley again under any circumstances.

Does anyone really, really know Mark Sanford? If Will worked closely for him for few years, wouldn’t he see the true side of Mark? Remember Will was so shocked when it came out that Mark had a mistress. Will thought he was asexual and they obviously never talked about women or did they? Am glad that I don’t live in SC1 district. Wouldn’t know who to vote for: a split-personality stranger, a religious lawyer or a comedian’s sister.

No need to remember Sanford’s 8-year ruin as governor or his support of Haley. He was a shitty congressman before too, and I speak as someone who visited his office and got a cold shoulder from him and wasted time dealing with his rather uncaring staff. Look, we have no doubt Sanford is going to continue his narcissistic behavior. And we have no doubt he’s only running for this seat because he wants to revive his national ambitions – and start drawing a steady paycheck again.
Couldn’t agree more. Serious question though: If Sanford manages to win Tuesday, and manages to win in May (which I doubt would happen, but just for the sake of the question), would he run against Lindsay Graham in 2014?

Sanford vs. Graham. I can’t tell which would be worse overall.

Reply

I think Sanford would be counting his lucky stars for getting back his old Congressional seat, his hefty salary and pension, and spend all his efforts keeping what he’d gotten rather than try for more.

At least in 2014, he’d face more risk reaching for so much more so quickly and would stop there.

Four years later — an eternity for a politician — everything could change; the worst of the worst is Sanford as congressman in 2014 and senator in 2018. South Carolina would take itself down several more layers of Dante’s Inferno.

“…spend all his efforts keeping what he’d gotten rather than try for more.”

As a narcissist or even someone with Aspergers who is focused on a goal, that type of filter is not to be found in his brain. A person with a normal ego and sense of self would never have run for SC-1 given his recent history and the potential hurtful exposure to his family, OR even given the fact that his soul-mate supposedly is “…an intensely private person….” She’ll love being the wife of someone intent on grabbing the spotlight to advance his career.

I do wonder if she is for real. A man who truly loves his fiancee would want her to be by his side regardless of what he did to his ex-wife, family, and friends. If he is so worried about losing votes should she show up now; can you imagine what the rest of their lives would be like? Is she going to hide every time he runs for an elective office?

If I were a supporter of Grooms, Limehouse, Kuhn, or any of the other eliminated candidate, I would vote for Sanford on Tuesday and for ECB in May.
It is the only realistic chance for your candidate to get the seat in 2014. If ECB wins, it’s back to square one for all the candidates except Sanford. Having lost to ECB, Sanford’s support would disappear. ECB has a better (albeit marginally) chance against Sanford than Bostic. Concede the seat to her for one year, and get a ‘do over’ for 2014, but without Sanford prempting one of the runoff spots.
With Bostic, he could lose to ECB too. In that event, Sanford might still run in 2014. If Bostic does beat ECB, he would be the incumbent and have the national and state establishment GOP behind him. He would hold the seat for years to come.
For the eliminated candidates or other potential candidates that may want to run, their only shot is if Sanford wins Tuesday and ECB wins in May.

The cowardly puke avoided himself from being activated but gets to decide which Reservists and SC Guardsmen/women go to fight while he sits back in a “non-deployable”/homeland security position as a reservist in the Air Force Reserve.

Fits:

I do appreciate you and your site but for you to even consider that puke to have a voice in deciding who goes to battle while that same shit sits on his ass in Washington because he has some convoluted concept of “fisical respnsibility”???

You are so removed from daily reality that I don’t know what to say……….

You and people who support Sanford are saying that the sacrifice that South Carolinians and American men/women in general who pulled duty in Iraq/Afghanistan while that puke stayed home and you say vote for him???

You are “dissiing” their sacrifice by supporting that puke just to support some fucked up concept that has no basis in reality.

Fuck Mark Sanford and anyone who votes/supports him.

Plain and simple………………

I only wish that the draft had never been eliminated.

Only maybe then would you see thing in a different light

“Well, I came down there with my hat caved in, and I’ll go back home with a pocket full of tin — oh, doo dah day”

Why are all these so called conservatives always looking for a government check and government health care? Why aren’t they in the free market producing jobs? Oh, maybe its because they have nothing to offer the free market, and welfare is not sufficient to support their lifestyle. They need to find a way to beef up their government benefits.

Sanford, Rubio, Ryan, Bohener, Cantor, Haley, etc. etc. etc. Have any of these people ever done anything other than suck up taxpayer dollars and take bribes?

You can blame Sanford for lying and cheating. You can blame Bostic for pandering to the evangelicals. But you really can’t blame Colbert-Busch for having a famous brother.

The bottom line is that while I generally can’t stomach liberals, I like what I see in Colbert-Busch. I like the focus on job creation vs. cut cut cut. Fact is we need to invest in education and infrastructure if our kids have a snowball’s chance of thriving here in 10-20 years.

I was hoping for Grooms myself, but I’m going Colbert-Busch on May 7th.

I admire Willie’s honesty and willingness to change course when confronted with an undesirable choice such as we have here.

This kind of shameful choice between “no choice” and “no choice” is helping to destroy our nation at all levels of government. I think Sanford is a weak, self-loving, piece of shit if ever there was one. I absolutely despise the idea of this idiot being rewarded with more time in public office, which he will mistakenly take as admiration by the public, IF elected.

I do have to concur with Willie that we (once afuckinggin) have to chose a lesser of evils from a pile of evil. Damn I get sick of this shit!!!!! Bostic does sound like a worse choice than Sanford. Colbert and her third rate comedian of a brother impress me even less than Sanford. Kinda reminds me of that joke about having “hit rock bottom and continuing to dig”.

The idea of Sanford ever again holding public office is at best, nauseating. Even so, I believe that Sic Willie is once again, right.
