The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is facing criticism over its as-yet-unexplained decision to stockpile ammunition – specifically hollow point bullets – at a time when government is supposed to be watching its bottom line.
DHS purchased 360,000 rounds of hollow point bullets recently – on top of 1.5 billion hollow point rounds purchased a year ago. Another 1.6 billion hollow point rounds will be purchased in the next few years.
The agency’s rationale? The old “Sam’s Club” excuse … a.k.a. it’s cheaper to buy bullets in bulk. Of course that doesn’t apply to hollow points, which are twice as expensive as full metal jackets. Nor does it explain the immediate need for this ammo-buying spree … which has exacerbated ammunition shortages in private sector marketplace.
Our theory? When government kicked off its “War on Guns,” Americans went on a firearm purchasing spree. This is government’s way of trying to keep up …

One can never tell
Take the time they ordered the momma to strip the lumpy diaper off her baby
Or the time they made the old lady get out of her wheelchair and drop her Depends
Those Homeland boys and girls are up against some mean ass desperados and personally I would pass on the hollow points and give each one of them BAR’s

Single stack .45 ACP, looks like a JHP Speer… Ammo for a man’s gun
Yep. I have Speer Gold Dot for when I carry.

Their original denial of the 1.5 million bullets purchased should raise eyebrows if nothing else.

Hey Will, I’d recommend searching for an article written by Andrew Tuohy for Military Times regarding this. Some interesting thoughts/observations on his part. (not taking either side, just good to examine both sides of the coin)

A good overview of the IDIQ issue, although he takes the reported numbers at face value and never checks to see if they are accurate. ( they are not).

You just linked to Infowars? Seriously? Infowars?
Wanna throw out some godlikeproductions? Maybe we can all stay up and listen to George Noory explain that the morning star is really a UFO while you wait on the East of the Rockies line to breathlessly tell everyone about the time you saw shadow people in your kitchen.
Regardless of your personal opinion on infowars, the link to the fed biz website proves the claim. Just because you believe a source is crappy doesn’t mean the information the source provides is
incorrect. Critical reading means applying analysis, not
jumping to conclusions based on emotional likes or dislikes. I don’t have an opinion on infowars, but I see it’s true – the feds are buying hollow points for DHS. Our country is in this mess because people jump to conclusions based on personal preference. We are easily manipulated because we are mushy minded.
Edit: proves only the solicitation. Maybe the contract has been fulfilled but I don’t see it. Okay I’m correcting myself the info wars article links to proof of purchase of some portion of the 360,000
360,000 is less than 0.024% of 1.6 billion.
Where are the other 1,599,640,000 rounds?
Agreed. Correction related only to the 360. If others were purchased, I didn’t see the references in the articles.

We would hang (and maybe did) a Japanese general for using these in open warfare on enemy troops, but we use them on our own citizens. I never did get the dual rationale.

There are so many things wrong with that statement that it’s not even worth the time to argue about it.
Give up the stupid rumor mongering.
I don’t think it’s rumor mongering, it’s simply incompetence. FITS advertises ‘truth’ but doesn’t know how to discern it, nor write accurately about it. Apparently, under the owners’ belief since it is a blog, ‘unfair and imbalanced’ is synonymous to incompetent, incomplete, ‘fake’ truth. It is true there has been a solicitation for the 360,000 rounds, but I don’t see any evidence of procurement. As a former fed employee holding a certified procurement position, It’s also likely (although FITs wouldn’t know) the money has been allocated. Bottom line, most of FITS pieces have a grain of truth buried under the slop. Readers just have to dig and read critically. I don’t see much of this.
Correction: I see the info wars article linked to a proof of purchase of some portion of the 360,000
360,000 rounds for a training facility where they burn through 10 million rounds a year is nothing.
And yes, you bring up a valid point. Almost all of the “evidence” used to support the claim that the DHS is buying 1.6 billion rounds comes from various bid solicitations. Few of which have actually been awarded, let alone had orders placed on them.
Agreed. I’m not saying the feds aren’t planning something nefarious, I ‘feel’ that, and I see evidence of real intent to tyrannize citizens in regulations that allow SECDEF ‘exception’ to posse comitatus, to order american civilians ‘relocated’ and interned. But feelings aren’t rational basis to assert as fact what is, or isn’t happening. Plus your point about the use of the rounds is exactly the issue in reporting so called ‘truth’. How many training facilities use 10 mil a year, cuz if there’s 10, and these contracts are over 10 years, there’s the 1 bil rounds. Or whatever the numbers are.
I disagree. The Feds are too much of a bureaucracy to accomplish anything nefarious on that scale.
I hope that’s true but I see us practicing ‘group think’ far too easily – humans in MY group (fill in the blank, Repubs, Dems, libs, conservs, blah) are better than humans in your group. Once a social norm is impressed upon the masses, it’s easy to herd compliant humans into doing things. Book Hitler’s willing executioners examines human tendency to go along with atrocities under ‘group’ pressure. Anyway I enjoy this dialogue and thanks for the note below about the GA training center. This is why I troll this site, for other reasoned views. These expand mine.
Google up the “Federal Law Enforcement Training Center” in Glynco, GA.
They have 18 separate ranges with over 400 firing positions.
That is who is ordering the ammo.
Oh, and there is NO evidence to support the “billions* of rounds” claim whatsoever.

Here is a link to what the “Plinkers” are claiming is proof that the government purchased 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition last year.
https://www.fbo.gov/index?s=opportunity&mode=form&id=7f6a48adb7fe40b7489fbbf5b86eaa0e&tab=core&_cview=1
See how many problems you can spot in that claim.
Has anyone looked at that yet? That is where 750 million of the 1.6 billion comes from, or so some people claim. Does everyone here agree with that assessment?
Or, do you look at that and realize that this whole issue is completely made up?

The geneva convention prevents the use of hollow point rounds in any kind of combat situation. I’d like to get a figure on how many bullets we actually used in some wars. 1.6 billion is a little ridiculous for “training” purposes. Would really like an official answer. Could be the govt just keeping the ammo manufacturers occupied in order to slow down the massive buys by American consumers.
It IS ridiculous, THAT is why you should question the accuracy of the claim. If you do that and look at the source documents, you will find that the numbers are no where near what they claim them to be. Either someone is REALY, REALY bad at math, or they are deliberately misleading you.
What iare you getting at on the hollow point issue? Are you trying to say that they should be illegal in the US?

Here is the bid request that is supposed to be for 750 million
https://www.fbo.gov/index?s=opportunity&mode=form&id=7f6a48adb7fe40b7489fbbf5b86eaa0e&tab=core&_cview=1
it’s no where close to that amount.
