Earlier this week, the S.C. Democratic Party (SCDP) sent out a press release comparing Maryland and South Carolina using statistics which (as you might expect) were less than favorable to the Palmetto State.
Why did they do that? Because Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley is the featured speaker at some big Democratic “issues conference” being held this weekend in the South Carolina Lowcountry.
Among the stats included in the Democratic release? Maryland’s unemployment rate is 6.2 percent (20th highest in the nation) while South Carolina’s is 8.7 percent (42nd highest in the nation). Maryland’s government-run K-12 education system has been ranked “best in the nation” five years in a row, while South Carolina’s SAT scores have declined for five years running (and currently rank next-to-last nationally). Maryland has kept higher ed tuition increases at just 3 percent over the last five years – South Carolina has not.
And on and on … all part of an effort to paint S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley as an ineffective chief executive (which let’s face it, isn’t a difficult picture to paint).
“The facts speak for themselves on which governor has better served the people of their state and Governor Haley has much she could learn from Maryland’s success,” SCDP spokeswoman Kristen Sosanie said.
Republicans (in Maryland and South Carolina) fired back.
“O’Malley has left Maryland in the throws of economic distress – killing jobs and raising taxes,” SCGOP chairman Chad Connelly said. “Their left wing policies will kill the economic growth and prosperity Palmetto State voters want.”
Hmmmm … “in the throws?”
So which party hack is correct?
Neither, really. Democrats claim higher education costs in South Carolina are going up because the state hasn’t adequately funded its government-run colleges and universities – which is ridiculous. The truth is our state has thirty-three taxpayer funded institutions at more than eighty campus locations – far too large a system for a state this small.
That’s why tuition is soaring.
Of course Connelly is every bit as full of it … failing to mention how Haley has backed plenty of “left wing policies” herself.
So … which state is better off?
To the poll!

Higher education costs are higher because we fund public universities less AND because our public universities operate on a larger budget. Honestly, a good bit of this happened under Sanford.
Maryland is better off mostly because it has a better economic engine than SC, which lets them retain a more skilled workforce, and a better education system, which helps keep up a more skilled workforce. Compare Baltimore to Columbia. Compare Bethesda to Greenville. Apples and oranges.
A better question to ask is if this state is even better off than Mississippi anymore.
“Honestly, a good bit of this happened under Sanford.”
You may be right on this, but I have never seen any statistics showing it. Got any?
“Compare Baltimore to Columbia. Compare Bethesda to Greenville. Apples and oranges.”
I think we are in agreement on that. No comparison between ANY parts of the two states. Maryland is home to about half the jobs created by the larger than normal government being created, and by the military industrial complex.
I like you r posts Smirks, you are one of the few here than refrains from name calling, which squelches open debate.
Is that the same Baltimore I got robbed at gunpoint?
Whats your point. Do you think you can’t get robbed a gun point in Columbia, Greenville, or Charleston?
As a life long Marylander, the problem we have is a roaring rumbling earthquake under out economic system that none of the DEMs want to acknowledge. You have a small percentage of the state paying the majority of the bills, and you have areas like Baltimore City and vast swaths of Prince Georges County receiving so many entitlement programs that when election time arrives? They vote for whoever will maintain and expand entitlements. I am headed for South Carolina in 6 years. The taxation is lower, the cost of living is lower, crime is lower. As for education? We have a top system where the majority of students in Baltimore City and Prince Georges are essentially dumb as stumps. Drop out rates are still historically high and graduating, while to some degree illiterate, is common place. O’Money has his eye to the greater prize. He never wanted to be Mayor or Governor. He has an eye to the White House and this is why he engages in all this nonsense when we have serious financial issues in this state that have gone under the radar for some time. Every time he imposes a new tax or raises one is because we are in trouble, albeit silent trouble. Time to see the money with your mind and not your eyes. Even Peter Franchot is disgusted with him.
that’s a really sad story.fuck maryland and south carolina.my heart is crammed in my cranium, but it still knows how to pound…this is the goddamn hottest motherfucker around

Maryland’s probably better off, but fuck ’em anyway. Yankee bastards.
Mason Dixon line is north of Maryland.
Maryland is occupied by Massachusetts/Soviet forces.
I have family from both Maryland and all over the South. Maryland hasn’t been a true southern state since before the Civil War. It’s Yankee all the way. The Mason Dixon line is nothing more than a line two surveyors named for themselves. It doesn’t delineate anything than that.
Maryland is Below The Mason Dixon line.

Hey FITS, I have an idea: why don’t yopu carry your Sorry lying HACK @$$ to Maryland..and take your dirtbag, hypocrite Master Sanford w/ you…
PS: Per (real) Author: David Fergeson: (looks like Maryland is following SC’s lead:
1. Maryland now has more elected Republicans (161) at the local level than Democrats (155).
2. In 2010, Republicans had a net gain of 43 elected positions at the local and legislative levels.
3. Maryland has 12 counties with a voter registration majority and over 1,000,000 registered Republicans statewide.
4. There are 15 county governments with a Republican majority.
5. Mitt Romney, Bob Ehrlich, and John McCain all won 17 out of 24 counties in their respective races.
why don’t you eat a whole plate of fucking scrapple, and get back to us later, fuckwad
white rural and suburbian people vote Republican, news at 11
A$$-backward Dumb@$$#$ vote democrat: But don’t look for a news report…the media would never tell the truth about who the Obama voters are…
As long as Montgomery and Prince Georges County are democratic the state will always be. Great place to make money but life is much better when you leave it behind.

What’s SICKENING: FITS and Sanford view South Carolina, and our people, the same way the democrat governor of Maryland does.
If you love SC, you are free to say what you want. But when you are an enemny of South Carolina, and hostile, like FITS and Sanford, you need your left-leaning, naraccistic, self-loathing @$$ kicked for running your mouth.
He FITS: You like Md. GTFO then..and Take that cheatin’ piece of crap Sanford w/ you. You two make US look bad…
O’Malley is a pig to the soles of his shoes. He always has been.

MD’s proximity to the DC tax money collection vortex isn’t hurting it either. It’s not a coincidence that all the money printing induced housing “recovery” started first in DC.
EXACTLY!!

What portion of state revenues come from taxes on federal payrolls?

Maryland is a tax hell.
Maryland is dominated by its urban counties and Democrat Party.
Maryland is corrupt.
Absolutely on the money!!!!!
Thus why when my financial plan is done in 6 years I am headed for South Carolina. People can say what they want about SC, but the fact of the matter remains that the standard of living is better and the rate of taxation is lower. Maryland is taxing it’s higher earning citizens out the door. I won’t spend much longer supporting the slackers and entitlement bas&ards in this state. DEMs get re-elected pulling money out of my pocket so Stinky and Boo Boo will vote for them. Then DEMs get rich from being in office. Bye Bye Maryland! No more of my financial pie!

I have a lot of family in Maryland. Believe me, the entire state is a complete shithole that you want ZERO parts of.
Great state 40 years ago but took a quick slide down hill and hasn’t stopped yet.
Absolutely fucking hysterical. A shithole compared to SC??? You have to be kidding, right? I left there 5 years ago with zero regrets after growing up there and being educated there. It definitely has it’s issues with taxes and demonazis. O’Malley is just as bad as Haley. But to call it shithole, clearly you are way off fucking base. As GaryJR below suggests, you don’t need a pole to know how much better off MD is than SC. And for the fucktards calling Marylander’s “Yankees”, it’s clear you were educated in the SC school system — enough said.

Sadly Republican policies are not working in SC. Until we admit that we will stay at the bottom with equally republican Mississippi. I favor small government so I suggest we dissolve our state and join NC to form one state.
Yep…
Glad to see you are seeing things my way
I’ve been saying that for about 20 years or so……..
The state of Carolina with its capitol in Charlotte is the way to go!!!
But the backward dickheads in South Carolina would not stand for it
They live in a different dimension….One of grand denial!!!
I suspect it is North Carolina who would have no desire to adopt its poor relation to the South. They are strong supporters of quality public education at all levels. They would not be interested in adopting a bunch of Howie Riches, out to gut public education for personal gain.

Born and raised in Maryland, retired from Baltimore City Police Dept and moved South to Murrells Inlet before my retirement papers dried. Maryland is in serious trouble, I know Martin O’Malley personally and he would stab you in the back in a heart beat to get over. We used to laugh because you could always tell when he was lying, his mouth would be moving. I am happy and better off living here in South Carolina.

Well…….
Maryland’s state flag is a damn site better looking that some fucking palm tree below a quarter moon.
In fact, I’ve always thought Maryland’s state flag is the best looking state flag among all 50 states (New Mexico’s is 2nd on my list)
Like we say in the Upstate:
When is the last time you’ve seen a fucking PALM TREE in GSP???
Fuck a bunch of Palmetto tree bullshit!!!
As far as I’m concerned (and I’m serious about this), I have absolutely NO interest or use for the state of South Carolina past the Greenville county line on I-85.
That is NOT to say that there are not good people in the rest of the state of South Carolina (there are good people everywhere in this great country – even Fayetteville, NC) but I have absolutely no connection/use with the rest of South Carolina past Greenville County. My loyality is Greenville NORTH to Charlotte and beyond along the I-85 corriidor to its termination south of Richmond, Virginia. Along with the I-77 corridor to my home state of West Vriginia
Richmond to Atlanta & north on I-77 is what I relate to (basically the Piedmont & mountain regions).
I just don’t get the South Carolina “psyche”
Probably never will…..
That’s a good thing in my way of thinking>>>>>>>>>>

You hardly need a poll to know Maryland is the state much better off. And such a poll on a local web site is just stupid.
You haven’t done your homework. Don’t drink the kool aid that the DEM party spews. There are many many reasons that SC is actually better off than Maryland. Do some research and don’t listen to this nonsense. I am a lifelong Marylander and the DEM party has weakened the state so much, with ridiculous taxation and policies, that I can’t wait to leave.

Timmy Pearson stated that Maryland had legalized that demon “gambling” under O”Malley. Uh, they have had parimutual wagering there (Preakness Stakes ring a bell) for a few years.
