This website aggressively supported the candidacy of S.C. Sen. Larry Grooms (R-Berkeley) in this week’s GOP primary for the first congressional district. Why? You can read our endorsement here …

Bottom line, we believed Grooms was the candidate most likely to vote consistently on taxpayers’ behalf while aggressively promoting free market principles and protecting our individual liberties. We weren’t alone in that assessment either … as two fiscally conservative champions, U.S. Reps. Mick Mulvaney and Jeff Duncan, also endorsed Grooms.

Unfortunately, Grooms finished third in this week’s voting … missing out on the chance to run against former S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford in the April 2 GOP runoff election by a handful of votes.

Who edged him out for second place? Curtis Bostic – a big government trial lawyer who doesn’t even live in the first district (and has some seriously questionable prior associations).

Our concern with Bostic, though, isn’t his residency issue or the squirrelly answers he’s provided to questions regarding the controversial “adoption” agency he represented (answers like … “it is not the job of an attorney to ascertain what the truth is. It is the job of an attorney to represent people”).

Our problem with Bostic is purely fiscal – and not just as it relates to his history of supporting government growth that far outpaces population and inflation growth.

Our concern is the impact Bostic’s election would likely have on the South Carolina Congressional delegation – which over the last three years has evolved into the closest thing to a unified pro-taxpayer front you’re going to see in Washington, D.C.

As it stands now, Mulvaney and Duncan (along with U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy) represent a solid bloc of fiscal conservative votes. That bloc has forced U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson to move considerably to the right on fiscal issues over the last three years – and has (at least initially) kept newly-elected seventh district U.S. Rep. Tom Rice from following his big government leanings.

Bostic’s election could – and likely would – disrupt this delicate balance.

“He will give Rice cover,” one conservative consultant told FITS. “And let Joe go back to being Joe.”

Obviously that would be a terrible development … and represents the best argument we’ve heard against supporting Bostic in this runoff election.

The best argument we’ve heard for supporting Bostic? We’ll address that in a subsequent post …

Stating facts friends is not “negative” campaigning friends. Lying about a candidate is. This is simply Curtis stating the facts. If people think this is negative, they better hang onto their hats if Elizabeth Colbert gets ahold of him.”

Asked if he were backing off his pledge to run a positive race, Bostic said, “I’m not sending out mailings and TV commercials that bash Governor Sanford, but I also want to be truthful and accurate when someone asks, ‘Curtis, what makes you distinct?

At least Bostic doesn’t get kickbacks like Paul Thurmond does on land sales his clients make to County Government. Land (“Bulow Hunt Club”) that the Greenbelt Bank Board refused to endorse or request. Land that was overpriced by $1.3 million and that Thurmond forced the appraiser to “re-appraise” to make “more expensive.”

Upshot?

Thurmond quietly pocketed a $100,000 “legal consulting fee” just months after leaving Charleston County Council and making phone calls to his former council members, pressuring them to buy this swampland.

The Post and Courier wrote THREE editorials in TWO weeks objecting to this “rush” land purchase, not even knowing that Thurmond was getting a “commission.”

Thurmond operates in secrecy.

At least Bostic operates in the open.

Apparently someone has taken to copying Bob Menges personal facebook posts and pasting them on this poor excuse for a news site. And I guess FITSnews’ obvious ties to Mark Sanford have nothing to do with its continued hit pieces on Curtis Bostic and its pathetic insinuation that he is somehow involved in child trafficking.

This filth isn’t even worthy of the title news.

Well alright. The good people in the first district have spoken.

I will support Mark Sanford because he is a tightwad, skinflint, and a two buck chuck. He could coalesce the good people of the taxed enough party. He has the experience to lead the charge for value with for our tax dollars. He can keep the House away from Democrats for 20 years. He could rise to a leadership position in a few election cycles. He can be Speaker of the House.

For these reasons alone I support his return to the House. He is not Presidential material anymore. He has a safe seat in congress to get the job done. If he bails out to run as VP on any future ticket, if this come back is for that purpose and not fixing our finances meriting the Speaker gavel….our state will flip back to Democrats and his name will be cursed forever in politics.

I would wager Mark has a perfect credit score. This is who I would hire to run my company. If America has another credit rating downgrade, we will not get it back. This is his redeeming quality…and he gets my vote. He can be Speaker of the House and he will be happy. He will write budgets that will lead to prosperity. We need committees and sub committees run by a new generation of Republican, and we need a perfect credit score mentality to teach a new generation Finance 301. He is the man who could help bring about a new zeitgeist in DC, of responsible taxation and spending. Even Democrats know he can balance the budget. Get with the program and look beyond the tip of your own nose. We have few years before the Euro and BRICS eats our lunch. He can make a difference…now.

Almost 2/3 of the people who came out for the primary said “NO” to Sanford.
Sanford might be a tightwad but under stress due to his temperament or sense of entitlement, we know how he can “bend the rules.”
Further, he is vulnerable on many fronts to deal making and coercion or dare I say blackmail because of his history both known and unknown by the
public.
He can not hit the ground running “coalescing” and leading as both Republicans and Democrats alike are not eager to associate with him. He will spend the next 2 years or more proving himself or even getting an audience. We know what happened last time he was rebuffed and rejected. Look how the other fiscally conservative house members who don’t have his past and have read the same books and have run their own businesses, scramble to make legitimate points and be heard.
With his ambition, however he might be masking it at the moment, he has never given up the hope of retaking the ground lost due to his scandal. The Apology and Redemption Tours, appearances on national TV, formalizing his relationship via press releases and pictures with his former mistress, the “never say never” spiel was all about his return. He could have done all privately in consideration of his family and gone on with his life. Even his eldest son, on the night of the primary stated that he felt it was inevitable that his father would run for office again!
We may not think he is Presidential material, but he doesn’t share that sentiment. Also, I believe when questioned about his return to politics he would not commit to term limits.
“Even Democrats know he can balance the budget.” Democrats welcome the obstacles he presents and the target he is, if he ever tried. The Democrats don’t want a Republican balancing the budget.

The choice between Sanford and Bostic is clear. Even though Sanford has the name recognition
and experience as Congressman and Governor, his previous deception and
unfaithfulness destroy his reputation and effectiveness. The people of South Carolina remember his shenanigans,
and so will all the other congressmen in Washington! Sanford will probably always be “damaged
goods” in the eyes of most people. On
the other hand, Bostic has a reputation of integrity and caring for other
people’s needs. Instead of being
involved in human trafficking, (a totally bogus caricature) his organization “Remember”
has annually helped numerous needy people around the world. The fact that the income of Charleston County
grew during Bostic’s tenure on the County Counsel, has nothing to do with his
being in favor of big government. His stated
purpose and goal is a balanced budget with no increase in taxes, something
Washington desperately needs. What about
Bostic’s living outside the district? Obviously
this is allowed for by law; and his work, business, church, and community
service are within District 1. He cares
about the people in the district as much or more than anyone else. Voting for Curtis Bostic on April 2 is a
no-brainer!

— gawdamightydamn!! Despite my loathing contempt for Lexington Ring, I’d rather see one of them represent us in Congress than to suffer more of the never ending humiliation Sanford has visited upon SC.

Mr. Bostic seems like a good Christian man to me. He has not committed adultery. Sanford has. I forgive him but I refuse to reward him.

Will you forgive and reward Bostic for being a big government RINO?

We’re voting for Representative. Not “best family man” or “most consistent Christian.” There’s a certain resume you have to have for that, and Sanford, scumbag though he is, has got it. He was one of SC’s better governors from 2003-2009.

The one argument I can see for Bostic is that Colbert-Busch could conceivably beat Sanford. Better a RINO than a D, right? But I think the district is conservative enough that we don’t have to worry. To paraphrase Bill Buckley, both candidates are electable, but one is clearly the more conservative.
