$179K For A Military Museum?

South Carolina taxpayers are being called upon to subsidize a museum “dedicated to preserving the heritage of the South Carolina National Guard.”

According to the FY 2013-14 budget being debated by the S.C. House of Representatives this week – $179,000 in funding would flow through the S.C. Department of Parks Recreation and Tourism (SCPRT) to the S.C. Adjutant General’s office to pay for “operating costs” associated with this museum.

Ridiculous …

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: South Carolina taxpayers have no business subsidizing museums. Accordingly, we recommend lawmakers eliminate this expense and place every penny of this $179,000 into a taxpayer rebate fund.

UPDATE: While the S.C. House of Representatives budget refers to “operating expenses,” the S.C. Adjutant General’s office says this money will fund “a memorial for the 16 soldiers we’ve lost since 9/11.”

I don’t know about this one willie

I would be willing to support this expenditure if they were to take CG Eckstrom and Reynolds Williams and seal them up tighter than a tick in the tank pictured above.

In fact I am willing to donate a case of condoms to be sealed in with the two sons of bitches.

I would not want them to fuck each other to death without practicing safe sex.

The only way they are going to fuck each other to death is if they are forced to wear uniforms with a name patch on them that says “Private Taxpayer”.

Actually, it’s a nice museum, and suggest that you go visit there. I’d rather see the money go for the museum than giving it Boeing, BMW, or the other companies that get corporate welfare here in SC.

Will – leave this one alone.

On a budget of almost nothing, the SCARNG and a dedicated group of volunteers have created a museum that is one of the best around. My friends/associates who manage military museums on posts across the country are jealous of the collection that the SC Military Museum holds and the quality of the displays. The museum is housed in an unused maintenance facility and the majority of the displays are constructed by the volunteers. As a professional military historian, I can attest to the value and quality of this facility – it is a regular part of my course of instruction.

The money in question is a onetime expense and money well spent.

We should honor and preserve our great SC military heritage. Only because of those of us who choose to serve freely can you the rights you have to publize what you wish. As a taxpayer and a Soldier I have no problem with our state using such a small amount to have a place of honor for those who give us our freedom.

Why not just take up a private donation to have the museum?

We have a state-funded S.C. Museum and a state-funded SC Confederate Relic Room. I have visited the Military Museum and the volunteers there are doing a good job. However, if they need state dollars to operate, military artifacts should be displayed in one of those we are already paying for. $179K is not an insignificant amount of money, and when added to numerous other “small” boondoggles in the state budget, such as the State Guard, they begin to burden the taxpayers and sow confusion as to the role of government.

Like the Florence Air and Missile museum that is long gone, this collection is a unique opportunity to preserve history from times dodged by progressivist “historians” and academic collectivism. The Florence collection was lost in large part to Charlotte, c’est la guerre
