The S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce (SCDEW) is preparing for another round of layoffs – its third reduction in force in the last six months.

It’s unclear at this point how many jobs will be eliminated, but sources tell FITS the layoffs are focused on the information technology and labor market information sectors of the agency – which employs nearly 1,000 people.

No word yet on how the agency plans on handling the layoffs …

News of the force reduction comes three weeks after SCDEW’s embattled director Abraham Turner resigned his post at the agency – which has been plagued by rampant mismanagement and corruption.

One Democratic lawmaker referred to SCDEW as “an absolute embarrassment.”

He’s absolutely right …

Just last year SCDEW doled out $54.5 million in “improper claims,” according to data from the U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL). In fact over the last three years the agency has an improper payment rate of 14.7 percent – one of the highest in the nation.

Who’s picking up the tab for this incompetence? South Carolina businesses and taxpayers.

It is tough to find a competent manager of an agency with several hundred employees and a multi-million dollar budget with a salary of $125,000 a year. Anyone competent is earning at least twice that much. Many school superintendents and city and county managers in the state are making at least $200,000 a year. Hiring a competent, but obviously burnt out retired general is not the solution either.

So other than selling ads on your blog Will, do you think you are accomplishing anything by criticizing government employee salaries?

Why have you made the text blocked to cut and paste? There are people working in agencies that will not be able to get this info until the end of the day, but it could always be sent through email. Duh.

C&P seems to work OK now.

IT and labor market information? I don’t know much about the agency’s structure, but those sound like core parts of the agency. Are they cutting off a foot and a hand instead of getting a damn haircut?

Will the reduction in IT staff result in a SCDOR-like breach? No, of course not! What am I saying?

I’m just as curious about what will be the next news out of DHEC. Are they done with the reorganization there?

Ever wonder what the Federal Dollars for Federal Programs tallies up to after wages are paid?
Do Veterans actually benefit from the money used to pay the Vet Reps their salaries?
How much money is used by SCDEW that is supposed to go to helping Veterans?

How much money for every Veteran representative, is spent outside of SCDEW?

Is there an accountability here or just finger pointing?
