At least two thousand workers at the Savannah River Site (SRS) will see their work hours reduced as a result of federal budget cuts, the Associated Press is reporting. Other workers will lose their jobs outright.

Details are hazy at this point but it’s clear the U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE) facility in Aiken County, S.C. is going to undergo some serious reorganizing.

“Consistent with DOE guidance … beginning April 1, 2013, approximately 2,000 SRNS employees will be placed on 32-hour work schedules,” a memo from SRS president Dwayne Wilson states. “Impacted employees will be notified by March 15, 2013. In select areas, full furloughs will begin on April 1, 2013. Impacted employees in these areas will be notified by next week.”

Full furloughs, obviously, mean layoffs …

Hmmmm … wonder if the ones who used taxpayer resources to campaign for Barack Obama will get pink slips?

Because that would be poetic …

Of course with half of the employees at the facility illiterate and the other half drugged out of their minds (according to S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley), it’s not like there will be a shortage of people to fire or anything.

“Down on River Site, they were hiring a few hundred people, and when we sat down and talked to them – this was back before the campaign – when we sat down and talked to them, they said of everybody they interviewed, half of them failed a drug test, and of the half that was left, of that 50 percent, the other half couldn’t read and write properly,” Haley told a group of Lexington, S.C. Rotarians in 2011.

SRS was built during the 1950s to provide nuclear weapons for the Cold War. It is in the process of being converted into a mixed oxide fuel facility – which would turn weapons grade plutonium into fuel for nuclear reactors.

The layoffs are in contractor personnel. That is why you use contractors. You can increase or decrease numbers with relative ease. Normal way to do business in industrial/manufacturing environments.

Sic Willie, I see fractions are still causing you problems. Reread what Haley said and then recompute.

He got the same thing wrong in the Boeing article. I’m sensing a pattern of either idiocy or an unwillingness to tell the truth for political reasons. Shocking, I know.

He learned about numbers and statistics from Mark Sanford and you recall how messed up he was with figures.

As long as Rich’s and Koch’s checks clear, doesn’t matter.

So how is Harry Reid protecting the $100K plus a year DOE jobs at Yucca Mountain that keep the Las Vegas of the eternal buffet bouyant when LA finds travellling there too expensive? Not that there is a billion dollar hole in the ground that makes us keep tons of HOT cold war left overs, but…

I agree with CNSYD, are you intentionally insulting the workers at the Savannah River plant? I guess that’s the Republican in you is coming out. Just can resist insulting people who do physical work for a living.

Further, even if Haley could be believed (Perhaps just another tone deaf rude Republican) what she said was; of the people who were applying for the available jobs 1/2 could not pass the drug test and 1/2 of the balance lacked the necessary reading and writing skills for the job. That means 25% of the applicants were suitable for employment. One would assume the suitable applicants were hired.

Also, in reading Haley’s quote and your paragraph preceding the quote, the two of you should probably avoid drawing a lot of attention to writing and speaking skills. You might not qualify for a job at the Savannah River Plant.

You should really read the proper stories and not just rehashed work by AP. Full Furloughs are worse the layoffs. Those people are still contracted but they are not getting paid (for up to four months). There will end up being 5-6k employees falling afoul of sequestration and around 1k losing their jobs. And these numbers are just from Savannah River Nuclear Solutions. They are the M&O contractor, but SR Remediations, Shaw Areva, Parsons and DOE will all have cuts ON TOP of this first round.

Some of us cover this for a living… We know our shit.

And also, Haley was proven completely incorrect in her statements about ARRA workers applying at SRS. Less than 1 percent of applicants failed drug & literacy tests.

As I recall, Haley’s slurs were refuted by the department doing the hiring at SRS at the time said them.

Not including that in this post is a lie by omission.
A liar is a liar is a liar. Credibility is hard to come by once it’s been lost. Just ask Jonah Lehrer.

Excuse me. What is this crap about blaming Barack Obama for these layoffs? Oh I understand the “republicans” had nothing to do about this problem. The astute FIVE AMIGOS aka FIVE ASSHOLES that are in congress should not be blamed.

What complete and utter nonsense. No BULL SHIT”. Like I’ve said you get someone like Duncan , who doesn’t have clue in congress we are digging a deeper hole.
With Duncan’s “executive” background in reposing and auctioning off houses what do you expect?
But of course according to jeff duncan “Mister Clemson Football”, he has all the answers, NOT. He can’t even tell anyone the truth about “I played football at Clemson under Danny Ford.”. Yeah for one year on the scout team. He never did suit up and run down that hill into Death Valley. Come now jeffy tell how it really was.

Everything else aside, the layoffs are caused by the Budget Control Act of 2011, which could only have been stopped by one person in the world, Mr. Obama. He did not have to sign it, and his veto would have been upheld.

Are you trying to say the Republicans could not have stopped it? They passed it in the first place. So now its Obama’s fault because he did not veto a bill passed by Republicans? It is a strange world the far right mind resides in. I think in the Superman comics it was referred to as Bizarro World.

Passed by the house republicans, and the senate democrats, signed by Obama. My statement was “which could only have been stopped by one person in the world, Mr. Obama” It is strange to me that someone would comment on such as this and not know how a bill is passed.

Obama could have stopped it. Period. He didn’t/ Blame you liberal God for all this.

The plutonium fuel (MOX) program at the Savannah River Site is but a part of activities at the site but has been sucking down more and more of our money. The estimate of the cost for that misguided program is $18 billion. The MOX plant construction alone is now estimated to be $7-bilion and it’s not nearly finished. Big-spending politicians like Senator Lindsey Graham and Representative Joe Wilson are protecting the MOX program from any oversight and cost controls. But they may have reached the end game with their tricks to transfer the wealth of tax payers in to the pockets of contractors like the French government-owned MOX company AREVA. Time that those parading as fiscal conservatives but who really want to keep spending our money on useless programs must be called to account for the milking of the public while contractors get fatter and fatter.
