At least two thousand workers at the Savannah River Site (SRS) will see their work hours reduced as a result of federal budget cuts, the Associated Press is reporting. Other workers will lose their jobs outright.
Details are hazy at this point but it’s clear the U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE) facility in Aiken County, S.C. is going to undergo some serious reorganizing.
“Consistent with DOE guidance … beginning April 1, 2013, approximately 2,000 SRNS employees will be placed on 32-hour work schedules,” a memo from SRS president Dwayne Wilson states. “Impacted employees will be notified by March 15, 2013. In select areas, full furloughs will begin on April 1, 2013. Impacted employees in these areas will be notified by next week.”
Full furloughs, obviously, mean layoffs …
Hmmmm … wonder if the ones who used taxpayer resources to campaign for Barack Obama will get pink slips?

Of course with half of the employees at the facility illiterate and the other half drugged out of their minds (according to S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley), it’s not like there will be a shortage of people to fire or anything.
“Down on River Site, they were hiring a few hundred people, and when we sat down and talked to them – this was back before the campaign – when we sat down and talked to them, they said of everybody they interviewed, half of them failed a drug test, and of the half that was left, of that 50 percent, the other half couldn’t read and write properly,” Haley told a group of Lexington, S.C. Rotarians in 2011.
SRS was built during the 1950s to provide nuclear weapons for the Cold War. It is in the process of being converted into a mixed oxide fuel facility – which would turn weapons grade plutonium into fuel for nuclear reactors.

The layoffs are in contractor personnel. That is why you use contractors. You can increase or decrease numbers with relative ease. Normal way to do business in industrial/manufacturing environments.

Further, even if Haley could be believed (Perhaps just another tone deaf rude Republican) what she said was; of the people who were applying for the available jobs 1/2 could not pass the drug test and 1/2 of the balance lacked the necessary reading and writing skills for the job. That means 25% of the applicants were suitable for employment. One would assume the suitable applicants were hired.
Also, in reading Haley’s quote and your paragraph preceding the quote, the two of you should probably avoid drawing a lot of attention to writing and speaking skills. You might not qualify for a job at the Savannah River Plant.

The estimate of the cost for that misguided program is $18 billion. The MOX plant construction alone is now estimated to be $7-bilion and it’s not nearly finished. Big-spending politicians like Senator Lindsey Graham and Representative Joe Wilson are protecting the MOX program from any oversight and cost controls. But they may have reached the end game with their tricks to transfer the wealth of tax payers in to the pockets of contractors like the French government-owned MOX company AREVA. Time that those parading as fiscal conservatives but who really want to keep spending our money on useless programs must be called to account for the milking of the public while contractors get fatter and fatter.
