For those of you who have never heard of GOProud, they are an organization of “gay and straight Americans seeking to promote freedom.”
Pretty awesome, right?
So you might be surprised to hear that this group of freedom-loving conservatives were banned for the second year in a row from CPAC—the annual Conservative Political Action Conference.
According to Jimmy LaSalvia, Co-Founder & Executive Director of GOProud, his group was again not invited to one of the biggest events on the conservative calendar.
Here’s the thing, CPAC is the largest annual meeting of conservatives. It’s an opportunity for Republicans to come together, meet, exchange ideas, and grow the party stronger. So why wouldn’t the ACU and their sponsors want more conservatives to attend?
It’s no secret the Republican Party is hurting right now. We lost the presidential race. We’re struggling to connect with young voters, women, and minorities. The same people who preach about unity within our party are participating in an event that purposefully excludes certain groups.
I’m not gay – but you don’t have to be gay, progressive, or a Democrat to support gay rights. You just need to love freedom for all people – like I do.
I attended GOProud’s event ‘Homocon’ at the RNC and met some inspiring conservatives and had some constructive conversations I wouldn’t have had if I hadn’t gone. I can only imagine how much young conservatives could learn—and what awesome stories they could bring back to their college campuses—from these folks.
According to National Review, three of the top-ten states with the highest gay population are Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania—all swing states. An additional three competitive states from 2012 (New Hampshire, Colorado, and New Mexico) are also on that list. These are battleground states Republican candidate Mitt Romney lost in 2012—and that the GOP must win in 2016.
It’s why we lost the presidency—and why we will continue to lose elections unless all conservatives start practicing what they preach and actually “uniting” the party. A person identifies with a political party based on their beliefs… and it’s those passionate conservatives we need to join together if we want a future for the Republican Party.

Sexual preference isn’t a civil right, but neither is being black or any other minority race, nor is being female. Civil rights aren’t what makes a person who they are, it is making sure people have rights even though they are different. The SC GOP chairman visited our local party and said we didnt have to change any of our ideas. He said our ideas were fine, but we have an identity problem.

The Republican party will grow less and less relevant until it finally decides to quit pandering to the “religious right” and others of the “Witch burner” mentality. I spoke with and heard anecdotal stories of quite a few conservatives who happen to be gay, who just could not bring themselves to vote for a party that looks down its nose at them and treats them and their quest for equal rights and benefits with disdain. There were apparently no small number of people who rightfully felt this way.
The Republican party seems to want our overpopulation issues to become much worse than they already are. They want to deny women abortion, and limit access to birth control to young people. I guess they enjoy seeing our welfare rolls grow with each passing week. Between that and their becoming more and more like the democrats, less fiscally conservative, less enthusiastic about our gun rights, and their constant pandering to the religious right, plus the blatant and rampant corruption in SC and Lexington County in particular, I did not vote for one single Republican in this last election. There were enough Libertarians, independents, and yes, even a Democrat or two (though not for Prez) to vote for that I didn’t need them. Oh yeah, the way they pushed the one decent candidate (Ron Paul) to the back burner at every turn and then enacted new convention rules to keep people like him quiet and in their place, didn’t make me want to vote for them ,either.
I hope they wake up and enter the 20th Century some time.

How many prominent Republicans around the country have been caught in gay relationships over the last ten years? I don’t have a number, but there were quite a few, and often those who were most vocal in fighting the “gay menace”. It’s kind of like a lot of churches, where the preacher preaches about the evils of adultery and the sin of premarital sex, only to later be discovered to be in an affair with one or more of his congregants’ wives.
I hate taxes too, but the current crop of RINO’s are doing nothing to lower our tax obligations and burdens. They spend like a drunken Democrat while Congress or the Legislature is in session.
Want to talk about “living corruption”? Good. Let’s talk about Jake, Jimmy, Alan, Bobby Harrell and Nikki. Better bring a lunch bag because we’ll be talking for quite a while for just those particular few. Unfortunately, there are many, many, more where those came from.

GoProud is much more radical than Log Cabin Republicans. Whereas LCR tends to work collaboratively with other gay rights groups, GoProud tends to shun them for taking a more liberal approach.

At the end of the day, the beautiful girl writing this piece is sadly naive and will likely come to know the futility of herding these different cats. I mean, a Social Conservative (anti-gay Conservative) who values a biblical sense of morality – a morality which doesn’t always lend itself to a limited government model – is just not going to cozy up to a solely Fiscal Conservative (likely pro-gay Conservative) who cares mainly about less government and low taxes and who likely has little-to-no regard for biblical morality or religion. Thus, to imply a “kinship” amongst these two distinct groups is often off based and unrealistic. (Sure, some people are both, but that is beside the point since this dualism is not the focus of this editorial.) Yes, the GOP is paying a price for this linguistically “conservative” schism; however, just like I can’t obtain a Ferrari by simply asking for one, so too, the GOP cannot have these two groups in their fold at the same time just by marketing and pandering to them. It would go against the law of political physics.

Good point. Social and fiscal conservatives just aren’t going to come together on this. It would be great if they did, but it’s not going to happen.
I love when people say they follow a libertarian philosophy and then support the government taking in acting role in excluding gays from civil rights and services (i.e. marriage and related tax preferences and benefits, workplace non-discrimination, etc). There is really no justification on discriminating against gay people that holds water. I don’t always agree with Will, but is on the right side of the issue. Nice article, Lauren.
