S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley gave U.S. President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans a piece of her mind this week during a trip to Washington, D.C.
After a closed door National Governors’ Association meeting at the White House, the one-time Tea Party darling ripped Obama for refusing to compromise on the sequester deal – but then slammed the GOP as well for “playing games.”
“I could not be more frustrated than I am right now,” Haley said after Obama told the governors he would not consider a sequester spending cut unless it was accompanied by tax hikes.
“My kids could go and find $83 billion out of a $4 trillion budget,” Haley added. “This is not rocket science.”
The governor then trained her fire on Republicans in Congress for skipping town and playing golf during the debate.
“There is no leadership. There is no confidence,” Haley said. “There is nothing that shows us that they actually care about what they’re doing. What they’re doing is playing games, and we as the taxpayers are having to cover for their games. We’re not going to do it anymore.”
Good for Haley …
Obviously she’s nothing but a hypocritical “reformer in name only” back here at home (as we’ve pointed on innumerable occasions), but given the opportunity on the national stage to play the partisan hack Haley didn’t discriminate in bashing Republicans and Democrats with equal verve.
As we’ve noted previously, we believe the sequester is much ado about nothing. In fact for some perspective on how ridiculous this whole debate is, read this excellent analysis by our friend Bill Wilson from Americans for Limited Government.
Still, Haley did a very smart thing by picking a fight over the sequester with members of both parties in our nation’s capital. First, she generated national ink for herself (which we all know this governor loves). More immediately relevant, though, she likely gained support among independents back at home (voters she has struggled to connect with since taking office two years ago).

I find it strange that everytime real cuts to spending are at hand, people run scared. Everyone preaches we need cuts, yet they can’t pull the trigger. And now I’m hearing those that preach less government moan over lost federal funds. If the cuts go through, then people will realize just how much of their daily lives are touched by federal funds.
Part of the problem is that D.C. only gives a shit about defense spending and corporate welfare, or anything that their lobbyists court them to save. When it comes to anything that affects the public, they don’t give a shit, except for that little nagging problem of the public voting their asses out if they wised up to that truth. Hence the theater that is going on now.

I haven’t seen where they have cut one cent and if they would find that waste/fraud/abuse (and I’m sure there is more than $100 Billion worth) they could pay for the discretionary and military sequester cuts and nobody would know what had happened except the fraudsters that got jail time. Let the hammer fall and the cuts begin. If the only places the Democrats and Obama can find to cut are air traffic controllers, child immunizations and first responders they will be proving they have no business running the country to even the most blind among them. It’s not games; it’s trying to get control of run away spending in what is arguably an inefficient manner.

If you cut Social Security disability, people will riot in the streets because these are people who cannot perform substantial gainful activity. They need that money to pay for cable TV, rent, groceries, and prescription drugs. If you cut flood insurance, how do you rebuild your home after a hurricane. SC people on the coast would be screwed over. If you cut FEMA, what about victims of the Super Storms like Sandy. and Hurricane Hugo. Remember that one? I lived through it and never want to do that again. We are so interwoven with the federal government there is no extrication without pain.

The decision — raising various fees associated with doctor visits by 20 percent.
20 percent. Sounds just about right. While retirees on fixed incomes got squat it is my recollection that the Gypsy Governor gave most, if not all of her staff raises topping 15 percent.
