A leading limited government advocacy group is blasting S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley for her support of $83 million in new government health care spending for the coming fiscal year.
“In the middle of an intense battle to protect our state from ObamaCare, our flank is ambushed by Governor Haley,” says Talbert Black, leader of the Palmetto Liberty political action committee.
In an email to his supporters, Black accuses Haley of wanting to “saddle us with more government spending on medical programs.” He also implies there may be a less-than-ethical motivation for her hypocrisy.
“Remember, Haley was the subject of a House Ethics committee investigation last year for accusations that she used her position as a sitting House member to benefit her employer,” he writes, referring to Haley’s lobbying efforts on behalf of Lexington Medical Center.
Despite compelling evidence attesting to her guilt, Haley was nonetheless cleared of wrongdoing by her former colleagues – however her case will be heard later this year by the S.C. Supreme Court.
Ethical issues aside, Haley’s record on health care spending is atrocious. During her first year in office she approved $225 million in bailout money for her cash-strapped S.C. Department of Health and Human Services (SCDHHS). She’s also spent more than $60 million on a bid to expand the state’s Medicaid population.
Last October, her SCDHHS director Tony Keck said his agency would need at least $200 million in new money.
“Remember how she railed against ObamaCare?” Black writes. “Now we know she was secretly plotting her own HaleyCare at the same time.”
For the record, Haley is opposed to the Medicaid expansion included in U.S. President Barack Obama’s socialized medicine law. However her ongoing efforts to further expand the Palmetto State’s already over-inflated Medicaid rolls makes Black’s criticism legitimate.

In the end we will join the other States who have entered the Medicaid expansion, as we should.
Nothing like pandering and posturing for votes, only to sober up when reality hits. Like Scott, Brewer, and Kasich, she’ll see the light too.

Hypocrisy or not- there are tens of thousands poor who will now receive access to or upgrades to their medical needs. That is a good thing unless you are from the Andre Bauer school of let ’em eat cake (as long as it will not allow ’em to breed).

The attack on Medicaid is another attack on the poor and needy. Do you really think the voters cannot see your machinations? The GOP will continue to become more of a minoirty party the more they run from common sense and the more they kick people in the teeth. While you may huff and puff and feel your turf is protected in SC, you are not in lockstep with the rest of the nation. We are in a liberal moment in the USA, thank God. The GOP is the party of old white men.
