Wearing what looks like the same light blue shirt from his first gubernatorial campaign over a decade ago, former S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford is appearing in television advertisements across the South Carolina first congressional district this week as his 2013 comeback bid ramps up.
Sanford joins Teddy Turner (son of media mogul Ted Turner), former S.C. Sen. John Kuhn and S.C. Rep. Chip Limehouse as first district candidates currently airing television ads. S.C. Sen. Larry Grooms is expected to launch his debut ad soon, we’re told.
“Washington’s math doesn’t add up,” Sanford says in his thirty-second spot, “and so for years while many have talked, I’ve fought to do something about it.”
A surprisingly large percentage of Sanford’s spot (entitled “Change Washington”) is devoted to addressing his 2009 sex scandal – which leads us to believe the governor’s trust problem is something which has shown up in polling.
“More recently I’ve experienced how none of us go through life without mistakes,” Sanford says in the ad. “But in their wake we can learn a lot about grace, a God of second chances and be the better for it. In that light I humbly step forward and ask for your help in changing Washington.”
Here’s the spot …
(Click to play)
As expected, Sanford is a pro on camera … but are first district voters buying what he’s selling?
As we’ve noted on numerous previous occasions, Sanford has a lot of work to do when it comes to convincing voters he can be trusted in the wake of his extramarital affair with then-lover (now-fiancee) Maria Belen Chapur. Sanford also has to answer for a taxpayer-funded “economic development” trip to South America which doubled as a romantic rendezvous with Chapur.
Sanford served three terms as the first district’s representative in Congress (1995-2001) followed by two terms as governor of South Carolina (2003-2011).

Christianity sure is useful for politicians. Religion has nothing to do with how to live your life, it’s just a way of tricking a bunch of idiots that you can be “one of them” before, during, and after breaking whatever tenet in the “good book” you care to.
I wonder, does the “Jeebus forgave me” defense work for the other nine commandments? “Your honor, yes, I killed him in cold blood, but God gives second chances!” Case dismissed!
My question is, how many of the Republican candidates said that God told them to run? My savior is nonpartisan.
God is a Republican, just ask BigT.
Mark Sanford’s “Christianity” has about as much content as Maria Chapur’s THONG!!!
He wants to play the First District for fools touting “none of us go through life without mistakes…”. Wow, he narcissistically thinks we’re just as bad as him!!!
If he believeshe can sell that line, then I have a bridge in Argentina I’d like to sell him.
Ok, you First District voters, the guy has: 37 State Ethics violations and $74, 000 paid in fines!!! http://www.thestate.com/2009/11/23/1041023/sanford-vacation-hunting-trip.html
“Take a Hike” Mark, you will not be missed!
Yep, Isn’t Ted Vick a preacher and Roland Smith, Chairman of the House Ethic panel, who exonerated Nikki Haley.
Richard Eckstrom loves to tout his “born again Christianity”.
Bob Peeler campaigned on “Faith Family and Friends”, while haaving an affair with next door neighbor and campaign worker.
Jake Knotts was taking the” Devil’s money, to do God’s work”
All of these hypocrits mocking God will pay a price, a severe price.

is a tenet of Christianity. but that does not mean it is good to
re-enter the very arena that enabled your downfall. Politics tends to
enable officials to act with impunity, which is not good for Mr.
Sanford’s recovery from sin. He needs to enter a different,
non-political arena, that will provide less temptation for him. his
strong desire to re-enter politics is reminiscent of the alcoholic who
wants to start dabbling in drink. It’s unwise for the addict and those
whose lives may be impacted by him. I’m sure there are plenty of high
powered perivate-sector companies that would be happy to clear a path
for him. Then, after proving that his repentence was sincere and he can
resist hubristic temptation, he could look at elected politics.”
I agree, but me thinks MBC wants a famous Congressman for a husband.
Maybe true, but she may have to settle for an infamous former-Governor instead! Since she truly believes in freedom, Notorious B.I.G. (Bad-ass Idiotic Governor) might be her idea of a good time.

If I’m not mistaken, Sanford has already been given that “second chance.”. That was from Jenny who attempted to save their marriage through counseling. His response was the “walk on the Appalacian Trail”, and the trip to Argentina on Father’s Day weekend. What will be his response to this second “second chance” is anybody’s guess.
Actually, I think Jenny did better than God on that score. She probably gave him 3rd and 4th, and 5th chances ad nauseum until as she states, ” …I started to see that my repeated forgiveness was likely enabling the poor choices Mark continued to make.”
Read more: Jenny Sanford Explains Her Decision to Divorce Mark Sanford – Harper’s BAZAAR
Further, his use of “I” and “me” for his accomplishments but blunts his failings by using the Royal “we” and “us,” is very telling.
But even more to the point, Sanford has a record of laying the blame for his lack of judgement and poor choices on God. “…we are not in charge at the end of the day, got to step back, didn’t mean for this to happen, didn’t intend for it to happen, it isn’t your fault, what will be will be….” [AP Interview] Sounds like a win/win for him no matter his behavior.

Hey, it’s better than looking at Chip Limehouse on tv.
Ladies, Gentleman and Voters
Pay special attention to the comment by Ms. Hilton
This is why Sanford has a pretty damn good chance of pulling out a win

How can any “family values” voter even CONSIDER voting for this guy?
How can any “family values” voter even CONSIDER voting for this guy?
How can anyone who has watched the SCDOT and SCDOR (among other cabinet agencies) explode in massive mismanagement scandals from what is extremely obvious long term – longer than Nikki’s 2 years in office – lack of executive oversight by an out-to-hike for 8 longg years Gov. Mark Sanford and still consider voting for this guy is mind boggling.

Anyone else see FITS slowly warming up to Sanford, claiming he has been convinced, by the end, that Sanford is the best candidate???
FITS: I was born at night…but not last night. You’re not nealy as slick as you think…we see right through you….

So tired of the GOPERS using the church tour to justify their failings as a human being. We all fall short, true, but this should disqualify him as any type of leadership position. He failed his own family leaving his boys on Fathers Day, for a piece of ass.
The difference is that Mark is a member of The Family/The Fellowship/C Street and believes he was annointed by God to be in power.

Hey Sanford, if you can explain why you gave your Furman gal-pal Susan DeVenny at First Steps a double-digit raise during the recession and then wrote an executive order to channel SC’s federal funds for disabled babies’ to her and six months later let her cut 1000 kids from the program and then allowed her to stop writing annual reports and evaluations required by law AND explain how First Steps got one of the worst legislative audits in recent history and is still in business, I’ll throw my vote your way.
Was she party to one of his line-crossings?
She sho nuf don’t hab nuthin else goin fuh huh

I am not a military person, but I once heard this remark regarding mistakes: “You forgive the troops, but you fire the general.” Somehow Sanford reminds me of this. Should he be using the word “overlook” instead of forgive?

I will fucking laugh my ass off at SC voters if he’s elected.
Too big to be an insane asylum? Look again….

Too bad Sanford is not recording his ad from a jail cell.
I guess what he did is not criminal (at least what we know of)….but to do his children like he did…that’s hard to overlook, and act like it’sOK, all of the sudden.
Forgiving a person does not include rescinding the consequnces of his actions, either…and that’s what Sanford is asking for.
It’s not forgiveness he wants…he’s asking for everybody to forget what he did.
Wonder if our wives and children could ever do that if we did what eh did???

Sanford humbly asked that you forget he deserted the state for ten days(his original plan) in order to chase ass in South America…..This man doesn’t have a humble bone in his body.I truely detest the way he uses God to get votes………..I would vote for Big T before I would vote for Sanford….That pretty much tells you how sorry Sanford is.

I wonder if his pending nuptials are contingent on a political comeback.
Also, does absolution normally follow confession and repentance. Somehow I don’t think marrying the mistress you dumped your wife and kids for is evidence of repentance.
It worked for Newt.
Just ask the SCGOP primary voters.
I think Sanford figured that the political comeback was contingent on making his mistress at least a fiancee, with a shot at wife in the offing – he’s nothing if not considerate of the sensibilities of the voters (not so much his family, but….)

Well at least he made CNN! They keep playing the ad, over and over. Shit, they even had a discussion about it. He’s probably getting as much free advertising as what he’s paying for. He’s playing that old tune that America is the land of second chances. Smooth move!

I did not need to hear or see this man so early this morning on the Today Show. Why does he speak to his audiences as though he is our parent? Hi is, was and always will be a loser. Why won’t he just go away?
Sorry, he.

So when was the last time any of this crowd with stones was in chruch on a Sunday morning other than Chrismas or Easter?
Probably the last time Sanford truly got down with the Ten Commandments and the Golden Rule. Grandparent has got it right. Maybe he should become a Televangelist. We are all fatigued by the hard sell and his not so subtle guilt-trip role reversal.

So it’s seems he is attempting to apologize for a/some mistakes he has made. Is he saying it was a mistake for him to marry Jenny in the first place? Because if you look at his actions not words his romance with Chapur was not a mistake his marriage to Jenny was the mistake.
Who’s to say Chapur isn’t being used just as Sanford ended up using his former wife? Four wonderful sons later and some wonderful memories; I doubt the former Mrs. Sanford sees it as a mistake. Right now Chapur and Sanford are too busy using each other to catapult themselves back into some kind of respectability. Maybe it is karma that two users end up together.

The media hates the GOP and SC, and they are ‘all in’ for Sanford…that should tell you a lot…
When was the last time the GOP or the state of SC did anything yo help themselves..??

On one of the news outlets last night they laughed about Sanford being on the Jesus Trail……when all else fails talk about God and forgiveness.Sanford really needs to get some new material,he’s wearing that Bible out and not in a good way.No doubt Chapur is wearing out her knees.
