As far as we’re concerned President’s Day is one of many excuses for people with inflated salaries and exorbitant benefits to take a paid vacation. People who don’t work particularly hard to begin with … you know, while the rest of us bust our asses trying to make ends meet in this thoroughly “non-stimulated” economy.
But that’s just us bitching …
Presidents’ Day – a federal holiday since the Nixon administration – is observed annually on the third monday in February. Why? Because if it wasn’t the bureaucratic unions would pitch a conniption.
Who is our favorite president? Easy: Calvin Coolidge – the only U.S. President born on the Fourth of July.
“Coolidge ascended to the presidency on August 2, 1923 when Warren G. Harding died, and immediately proceeded to cut taxes and spending,” we noted recently. “By the time he was done, only 2 percent of the nation paid any income taxes, and the growth in the federal government had flatlined – enabling 25 percent of the nation’s debt to be retired.”
Oh yeah … and the Roaring Twenties happened.
Other presidents we like? Thomas Jefferson – who articulated the individual liberties and limited government principles this website consistently . We’re also fans of John F. Kennedy, who understood the stimulative value of income tax relief and the efficacy of a non-interventionist U.S. foreign policy.
We also like Bill Clinton – who supported welfare reform and capital gains tax cuts and was far more pro-free market than either of the two neo-fascists who followed him in office.
And while Clinton was far from perfect, he did enjoy putting cigars in fun places …
Presidents we don’t like? Big government backers like Franklin Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

When you look at today’s horrible unemployment, ignorant spending, astronomical gas prices, nose-diving salaries, world embarrassment, disaster healthcare, tax increases and lack of confidence…Bush is looking REAL good right now.

“Let’s just set aside Social Security and all of the so-called “communist” economic reforms and concentrate on the ultimate issue involving his presidency. The issue which thoughtful conservatives squirm at but grudgingly recognize: FDR’s policies and leadership were instrumental in winning WWII!
Case in point: Against strong opposition from conservatives, Roosevelt rammed through the construction of the Hoover and Grand Coulee Dams. The opposition said that there was no way America would ever need that much hydroelectric power. Just after the Japanese invaded Pearl Harbor the Hoover Dam was dedicated. This gigantic WPA project (along with the Grand Coulee) provided the vast amount of power required by the aluminum smelting industry on the west coast to gear up for war production. In addition, Los Alamos was one of the biggest users of the energy provided by what were regarded as vital resources in gaining victory. There’s a reason these dams were heavily guarded and protected by anti-aircraft batteries.
And let’s not forget the WPA dams constructed by the TVA which provided electric power to east coast arms manufacturers.
Had these resources not been available to American industry it is entirely possible that, at the very least, the war would have lasted much longer. The Hoover Dam was approved prior to Roosevelt, began construction prior to Roosevelt, and was mostly completed by dedication on Sept. 30, 1935.
The WPA wasn’t funded until April 8, 1935. While there very well may have been some WPA funds that went into the Hoover Dam, it was already a done deal by the time the WPA was up and running. Not a strong argument for your piece.
You are right. I overstated the Hoover Dam side of my argument. I will go in and change the article. I stand on the Grand Coulee side of the equation, however, as the first generator came online around a month after Pearl Harbor and was fiercely opposed by conservatives.

Thats absurd of course the repeal of Glass Steagall was a Republican bill, push through by Phil Gramm. The Gramm Leach Bliley Act was passed on a Party Line vote. I agree with your assessment it was the cause of the collapse.
